The guitar in Western Swing holds a particularly important place. Many guitarists have made major contributions in the field but the cornerstone remains Eldon Shamblin whom Rolling Stone magazine once called the World's Best Rhythm Guitaritst. His sophisticated swinging and moving chords forever impacted the music. Coupled with him were early lead players like Muriel Zeke Campbell who performed dazzling single-string solos on records up to two years before Charlie Christian joined the Benny Goodman Sextet. As a genre of muisc Western Swing is a unique blend of jazz blues cowboy western gospel and Spanish sounds. The repertory of any Western Swing bandincludes tunes associated with each of these schools of music but a consistent style flows through every performance. The roots of Western Swing are not easy to trace. Most pinpoint the Light Crust Doughboys (formed circa 1931) of Fort Worth Texas as the first example. The Life And Music Of The Legendary Jazz Guitarist-In guitar history no single figure stands as tall as jazzman Charlie Christian. He helped not only introduce the electric guitar to the world but also popularized single string solos moving the instrument from background rhythm to the forefront of popular music. And like so many important jazz players he made enormous contributions in the span of an all-too-short life. Born in 1916 in Texas Christian moved to Oklahoma City at an early age where he became immersed in the jazz culture of the Sooner State. Influenced by family jazz musicians in and out of Oklahoma and area western swing players Christian emerged with his own unique style of playing. By 1939 hejoined the Benny Goodman Sextet. During the next few years he received national acclaim. At clubs like Minton’s in New York he even helped craft the early stages of Bebop. And yet by 1942 he succumbed to tuberculosis and passed into history. This DVD covers all aspects of Charlie’s life and music featuring interviews with family friends fellow Oklahoma jazz musicians and music luminaries like Claude ‘Fiddler’ Williams Jerry Jerome and Les Paul. Also included are a large array of musical performances by such guitarists as Herb Ellis Eldon Shamblin Zeke Campbell and others.

Rachmaninoff?s music for the All-Night Vigil service ? long known inaccurately as his ?Vespers? ? is a masterpiece in its own right. It draws on centuries-old Orthodox chant and the performance tradition of Russian folk music and embodies the ideal of Russian church music championed by a group of Moscow musicians of the time. In this All-Night Vigil the great composer-pianist-conductor has allied his own imagination skill and experience with the expertise built up at the Synodal School of Church Music ? not least by its choir which gave the first performances at several Moscowconcerts.   This edition has been carefully prepared to present Rachmaninoff?s music in a clear and easily readable format and also offers a new transliteration of the Church Slavonic text. For the first time an audio pronunciation guide is provided online which will prove indispensable for choirs wishing to perform this most beautiful of masterpieces.   In the November/December issue of Choir and Organ Jeremy Summerly writes that this edition of All-Night Vigil is 'a timely publication and it is difficult to imagine it presented better.'
