Le film a marché correctement, mais ce n'est qu'après son premier passage à la télévision qu'il est devenu un véritable classique populaire et familial. La jeune Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), son chien Toto, et ses trois compagnons sur la route de briques jaunes qui mène à Oz - l'homme en fer blanc (Jack Haley), le lion (Bert Lahr) et l'épouvantail (Ray Bolger) - sont devenus des icônes de la culture populaire. Dans son rôle de sorcière, Margaret Hamilton a effrayé des générations d'enfants. Aujourd'hui, le film a gardé ce côté frais, effrayant et amusant qu'il avait lors de sa sortie. Il prend peut- être certaines libertés avec l'histoire de L. Frank Baum, mais il reste fidèle à son esprit tout étant spectaculaire.
