string quartet was
written for the Pacifica
Quartet, who are
featuring it in numerous
performances from May
2014 through February
2016, across the country
and abroad. Their blog
page dedicated to the
work also features the
composer's notes, for
more indepth insight.
...impassioned solos
emerge from ominous
quiet, and high arpeggios
in the violins quiver
alongside the earthy
cello. Ms. Ran skillfully
deploys these extremes of
color, volume and pitch,
yet the overall somewhat
chilly impression is one
of poise. -- Zachary
Woolfe, The New York
Times. My third string
quartet was composed at
the invitation of the
Pacifica
Quartet, whose
music-making I have come
to know closely and
admire hugely as resident
artists at the University
of Chicago. Already
in our early
conversations Pacifica
proposed that this
quartet might, in some
manner, refer to the
visual arts as a point of
germination. Probing
further, I found out that
the quartet members had
special interest in art
created during the
earlier part of the 20th
century, perhaps between
the two world wars.Â
It was my good fortune to
have met, a short while
later, while in residence
at the American Academy
in Rome in the fall of
2011, art conservationist
Albert Albano who steered
me to the work of Felix
Nussbaum (1904-1944), a
German-Jewish painter
who, like so many others,
perished in the Holocaust
at a young age, and who
left some powerful,
deeply moving art that
spoke to the life that
was unraveling around
him. The title of my
string quartet takes its
inspiration from a major
exhibit devoted to art by
German artists of the
period of the Weimar
Republic (1919-1933)
titled “Glitter and
Doom: German Portraits
from the 1920sâ€,
first shown at New
York’s
Metropolitan Museum of
Art in 2006-07.Â
Nussbaum would have been
a bit too young to be
included in this
exhibit. His most
noteworthy art was
created in the last very
few years of his short
life. The
exhibit’s
evocative title, however,
suggested to me the idea
of “Glitter, Doom,
Shards, Memory†as
a way of framing a
possible musical
composition that would be
an homage to his life and
art, and to that of so
many others like him
during that era.
 Knowing that their
days were numbered, yet
intent on leaving a mark,
a legacy, a memory, their
art is triumph of the
human spirit over
annihilation. Parallel
to my wish to compose a
string quartet that,
typically for this genre,
would exist as
“pure musicâ€,
independent of a
narrative, was my desire
to effect an awareness in
my listener of matters
which are, to me, of
great human concern.
 To my mind there is
no contradiction between
the two goals. Â As in
several other works
composed since 1969, this
is my way of saying
‘do not
forget’, something
that, I believe, can be
done through music with
special power and
poignancy. Â Â The
individual titles of the
quartet’s four
movements give an
indication of some of the
emotional strands this
work explores. 1)
“That which
happened†(das was
geschah) – is how
the poet Paul Celan
referred to the Shoah
– the Holocaust.
 These simple words
served for me, in the
first movement, as a
metaphor for the way in
which an
“ordinaryâ€
life, with its daily flow
and its sense of sweet
normalcy, was shockingly,
inhumanely, inexplicably
shattered. 2)
“Menace†is a
shorter movement,
mimicking a Scherzo.
 It is also
machine-like, incessant,
with an occasional,
recurring, waltz-like
little tune –
perhaps the chilling
grimace we recognize from
the executioner’s
guillotine mask. Â Like
the death machine it
alludes to, it gathers
momentum as it goes, and
is
unstoppable. 3) â
If I must perish - do
not let my paintings
dieâ€; these words
are by Felix Nussbaum
who, knowing what was
ahead, nonetheless
continued painting till
his death in Auschwitz in
1944. Â If the heart of
the first movement is the
shuddering interruption
of life as we know it,
the third movement tries
to capture something of
what I can only imagine
to be the conflicting
states of mind that would
have made it possible,
and essential, to
continue to live and
practice one’s art
– bearing witness
to the events.
 Creating must have
been, for Nussbaum and
for so many others, a way
of maintaining sanity,
both a struggle and a
catharsis – an act
of defiance and salvation
all at the same
time. 4)
“Shards,
Memory†is a direct
reference to my
quartet’s title.
 Only shards are left.
 And memory.  The
memory is of things large
and small, of unspeakable
tragedy, but also of the
song and the dance, the
smile, the hopes. All
things human. Â As we
remember, in the face of
death’s silence,
we restore dignity to
those who are
gone.—Shulamit

Composer. I Have
Heard the Music There for
treble voices, optional
descant, with piano is a
lyrical work that
utilizes a reoccurring
motif which grows and
varies. The developing
variation-like use of
this theme speaks to the
image or notion of
growth; the growth of a
tree, of a person, or a
choir. We may start out
small, then vary, change,
develop, transform. The
vocal line’s
slight variation, use of
repetition, imitation,
and canonic-like
movements weave a thread
of familiarity through
the piano’s
tapestry of subtle shifts
in timbre, register, and
alternation between
chorale-like writing and
moments of florid
flourishing; the music
paints the imagery of the
text.The text by Leslie
Grant Scott illuminates
themes of the humanity,
solace, and comfort we
find in Nature. The
forest’s foliage
filters out the harshness
of the world, and we are
calmed by the
forest’s heart. To
me Nature is also a
metaphor for community,
or the network of loved
ones you may have, over
perhaps your choir;
together with compassion
and kindness we are able
to filter the
world’s harshness,
together we grow, we
celebrate, and we listen
to the music around
us.SILENCE [Leslie Grant

€œI have never
experienced such silence
or seen an audience moved
in this way.†Felix
Mendelssohn
Bartholdy
Up to
the present day there has
scarcely been a work in
the history of music
which has fascinated
listeners and performers
more than Bach’s
“St Matthew
Passionâ€.
Originally composed for
Vespers on Good Friday,
and even longer in
duration than the
“St John
Passionâ€, it
reconstructs the story of
Christ’s Passion
with immense musical,
emotional and spiritual
intensity.
And so,
this monumental and
complex composition has
come to rank amongst the
high points of Western
culture. For good reason
the
“rediscoveryâ€
of Johann Sebastian
Bach’s music began
in 1829 with the
performance of this work
by Felix Mendelssohn
Bartholdy and the Berlin
Singakademie.
The
autograph manuscript is
regarded as one of
Bach’s most
beautiful – the
fair copy demonstrates
the importance he
attached to the careful
preservation of the work
for posterity. A further
spezial feature is the
coloured ink with which
he wrote the biblical
text and the music of the
chorale “O Lamm
Gottes,
unschuldigâ€.
This facsimile edition
reproduces the autograph
score of the “St
Matthew Passionâ€
for the first time in
high-quality colour
printing. The Bach
specialist Christoph
Wolff introduces the
background to the
work’s composition
and the characteristics
of the
manuscript.
Barbar
a Schneider-Kempf and
Martina Rebmann
(Staatsbibliothek zu
Berlin) provide further
details regarding the
history of the autograph
manuscript.

note: “This piece
(originally for cello and
piano) was written for an
exhibition devoted to
artists suffering
schizophrenia in 2006. At
the base of the piece is
a 4-chord progression,
very simple and minimal.
A person with
schizophrenia hears
voices, which can be
verydisturbing; there is
a yearning for silence. I
wrote this work so that
my son Alex who suffers
from the illness can
listen to calmness,
meditation. ItÂ’s
called Blue Silence
because blue is sometimes
associated with healing.
In the 2009 arrangement
for clarinet, cello and
piano, there is a lot of
interplay and echo
between the single line
instruments, i.e. they
are not playing a
lottogether, rather one
after the
other.â€. $19.99 - Voir plus => Acheter

You really must
have a copy of Mercy,
Mercy! GIA’s new
benefit album for church
musicians who were
victims of the recent
hurricanes. You are going
to love the selections!
We’ve put together
a delightful and eclectic
mix of tunes and texts
coupled with an
impressive list of
composers, arrangers, and
performers who, for the
most part, share a common
thread. Many of the
selections were written
or performed by folks who
suffered loss during the
disaster in the Gulf
Coast region. Other
pieces have a special
musical connection to
that area of the country.
Ryan Meyers’ home
in Mississippi suffered
extensive damage as a
result of the storm.
ValLimar Jansen has
numerous relatives who
lost everything. The
everpopular Dameans all
met in the 1960s at Notre
Dame Seminary in New
Orleans. We included
something with a French
connection: Théodore
Dubois’
(1837–1924)
haunting “Adoramus
te Christe,†first
performed on Good Friday,
1867, in Paris. There are
three beloved African
American spirituals. And
how could we forget Rory
Cooney’s
arrangement of “O
When the Saints Go
Marching In There
are other great songs
here, but you’ll
have to listen! This
album will touch your
heart. Best of all, your
purchase will help
rebuild the lives of
church musicians. Both
the American Guild of
Organists (AGO) and the
National Association of
Pastoral Musicians (NPM)
have set up funds to help
church musicians affected
by these tragic storms.
The composers represented
on this recording have
donated their royalties,
GIA Publications, Inc.,
has donated all
production costs, KRT
Select has donated the
cover art for the CD, and
CRTCustom Products has
donated the manufacturing
expenses. 100% of the
retail price of this CD
will be split evenly
between the AGO Hurricane
Relief Fund and the NPM
Hurricane Assistance
Fund. CONTENTS: We Are

e Listening,” written
by Grammy-nominated
composer Cheryl B.
Engelhardt in December
2017 for VOICES 21C under
the artistic direction of
André de Quadros, draws
its inspiration from Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr.'s
impactful 1967 speech,
“Beyond Vietnam: A Time
to Break Silence.” This
dynamic, emotion-filled
piece expresses King's
call to end societal
silence. The rhythmic
elements in the piece are
derived from the poetic
nature of King's speech.
The inclusion of a
children's choir,
inspired by the Parkland
school shooting and
subsequent protests,
symbolizes the disruption
of childhood peace by
violence. Notably, the
virtual collaboration,
featuring Donzaleigh
Abernathy, Dr. King's
goddaughter, emphasizes
the song's contemporary
relevance in addressing
social issues, and was
featured in PEOPLE.
Premiered live at the
Massachusetts Music
Educators Conference in
2018 by VOICES 21C, and
digitally released during
Black History month in
2021, “The Listening”
stands as a profound
anthem for breaking
silence and to foster
positive change. $3.50 - Voir plus => Acheter
