Les Preludes (Symphonic Poem No.3) grew out of the composer?s unpublished choral setting of Joseph Autran?s poem ?The Four Elements?, blending stirring martial music and lovely pastoral themes to make this work the most popular of the symphonic poems. The latest volume of Chamber Music for Violoncellos contains four sacral works, two of which were arranged for cello quartet by the editor of the series, Árpád Pejtsik. Both Angelus!, Liszt's piano piece of ethereal beauty, and the Kyrie of Mozart's Requiem, an irresistibly surging four-part fugue, are magnificent when played with the immensely rich sound of the four cellos. The second part of the volume contains a pair of inspired works by two prominent cellists and composers of the 19th century: Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Fitzenhagen's Consecration Hymn and Friedrich Grützmacher's Ave Maria. While an instrumental skill of at least intermediate level is required for playing the upper parts due to the use of higher positions, the lower parts can be performed by beginner cellists. Par HENSELT ADOLPH. The composer and pedagogue Adolph von Henselt (1814?1889) can truly be considered one of the founding fathers of the Russian School of piano playing. He counted among his pupils Nicolai Sergeyvich Zverev, the teacher of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin. Rachmaninoff considered Henselt?s Etudes the equal of those by Liszt and Chopin for their great beauty. Henselt?s music was well-known in his time, and in the repertoire of the greatest virtuosos of the 19th century, including Clara Schumann (who premiered his F minor Concerto with Mendelssohn conducting), Franz Liszt, Hans von Bülow, Vladimir de Pachmann and Alexander Scriabin. The two sets of Etudes Opp. 2 and 5 were composed just before Henselt moved permanently to Russia and each set was originally published as two books of six études. This new Edition Peters Urtext edition collects each set in its own volume, together with, in volume 1, a selection of Henselt?s Exercices préparatoires and, in volume 2, two additional etudes. Christian Sinding's six Piano Pieces Op. 32 have become world famous due to third piece Rustle of Spring. Sinding's music combines late-Romantic tonal charm with mysterious Nordic cadences, also typical of Edvard Grieg or Niels W. Gade. The sometimes virtuosic character does not rival the complexity of Franz Liszt, meaning some pieces remain within the grasp of the advanced pupil. The whole opus, available in the original version for the first time, is based on a critical comparison of the first edition with the composer's autograph. The six pieces are each of a different character and level of difficulty. Par ROSSINI GIOACHINO. The “ Petite Messe Solennelle ” is the finest work of Rossini ’s late years. He composed it between 1863 and 1864 at the age of 71 as a commission for Countess Louise Pillet-Will for the consecration of her private chapel, where the work received its first performance in March 1864. Together with the “Stabat mater”, the mass is one of the composer’s most important sacred works. The unusual instrumentation with two Pianos and Harmonium is entirely in keeping with the Neapolitan Keyboard tradition of the 18th century which was cultivated in France in Rossini ’s day. It forms a distinct contrast to the style of large-scale sacred compositionsas written by, for example, Liszt and Bruckner. Rossini explained that he wrote the later Orchestral version of the work dating from 1867 out of concern that if he did not do this, other composers might orchestrate the mass too heavily in later arrangements.
