680160919949. A new
day. A new event. A new
opportunity. We look
forward to these things
and the potential they
hold. We live our lives
looking forward, but we
understand them looking
backward (a thought of
Danish philosopher Soren
Kierkegaard). We do not
always know what the
future may hold, but we
must remember: first,
there are no guarantees
beyond the time and
opportunity we are given
to do good. Second,
change around us is
inevitable. Finally, and
the most important
aspect, we have choices.
This lesson is fixed to
the composer's office
door: Today is the
greatest day of your
life, if you want it to
be. Why not look forward
to the Promise on the
Horizon and the
possibilities for
greatness that lie within
it? The opening motif of
this concert fanfare is
purposely inquisitive as
the piece seeks to
establish its first
steps. The subtle shift
at measure 37 and again
at measure 69 are
reminders of the
challenges that await us
during the journey. Here
again it is a matter of
choice - do we choose to
let circumstances define
us, or do we define the
circumstances? The
section at 93 is a
resounding answer that we
will move barriers,
overcome obstacles and
keep our vision looking
forward. The piece builds
toward an exciting
conclusion from measure
127 onward. The piece
reinforces several basic
rhythmic patterns in 6/8
time. As a number of
these rhythms are
repeated, it provides an
easy opportunity for the
entire ensemble to grow
more comfortable
performing in this meter.
While it is a
fanfare-type piece,
remind young musicians to
play with lightness and
precision, rather than
intensity in volume.
Maintaining this style of
articulation and accuracy
helps the rhythms in 6/8
time maintain their
buoyancy. It is vital
that each musician
listens for the melody
and balances their part,
especially in moments
where the melody is
passed between sections.
If vibes are not
available, a second bell
set can be employed in
its place. It is hoped
that this piece is an
uplifting way to open
your next concert, and a
meaningful opportunity
for you to discuss the
power of making positive
choices with your
students in the ensemble
(as a reminder, regular
practicing of their
instrument is a positive
choice). Wishing you and
your ensemble well as you
look to the Promise on
the Horizon. A new
day. A new event. A new

original work by Thom
Sharp is an energetic
adventure-themed rondo in
which every section takes
the lead heading off into
the horizon looking for
adventure. The rhythm of
the A theme is used for
new melodies in the
contrasting sections,
either in its original
form or starting on a
different beat to create
a new, yet familiar,
rhythm. The last
iteration of the A melody
employs augmentation. All
of these devices provide

inches. As aspiring
fingerpicking guitarists
started expanding their
horizons from folk,
blues, and ragtime in the
1970s, it was only
logical to look towards
early jazz tunes as a
vast source for new
possibilities. For one
thing, they could follow
the same evolutionary
path from ragtime to jazz
that had been taken by
pianists such as Jelly
Roll Morton and Harlem
stride players like James
P. Johnson and Fats
Waller. These musicians
all composed in a variety
of styles, but their most
ambitious piano solos
expanded on the classic
ragtime format developed
by the likes of Scott
Joplin, James Scott, and
Joseph Lamb, using
several strains that
usually changed keys at
least once. Morton, the
self-proclaimed inventor
of jazz, would record
versions of tunes like
King Porter
Stomp and The
Original Jelly Roll
Blues that are
similar to straight
ragtime performances, and
others where there is
lots of room left for
embellishment and jazz
improvisation.
The present
collection is a bonanza
for guitarists who want
to tackle advanced
arrangements along the
lines of ragtime but
featuring jazz age
harmonies from the
playing of Jelly Roll
Morton, Louis Armstrong,
Bix Beiderbecke, WC
Handy, the Original
Dixieland Jazz Band and
other early jazz legends.

680160689750. The
first time I saw an
alpenglow, I had no idea
what it was. It was the
late 1980s, and I was at
a music camp at the base
of theRocky Mountain
National Park in
Colorado. A few of us got
up in the middle of the
night so we could hike to
a vantage pointat the
foot of Longs Peak, to
watch the sun rise
without any trees
obstructing our view.
Even though we had a few
moreminutes to go before
the sun breached the
horizon, when I looked up
at the face of Longs
Peak, it was glowing
intensely with amost
beautiful peach-pink
color. This enchanting
vision lasted only about
ten minutes, after which
the color faded as the
sunrose. Throughout the
next thirty years,
whenever I returned to
the Rocky Mountain
National Park, I would
occasionally catchthis
pre-dawn light show in
all its glory.An
alpenglow is an optical
phenomenon that is
visible on high altitude
mountains. It happens
twice daily, right before
the sunrises and right
after it sets. The
earth’s atmosphere
scatters the sun’s
light, allowing
particular wavelengths of
light through
andblanketing the
mountains in rich hues of
peach, pink, red, and
purple.Alpenglow opens
with First Light. This
movement begins in the
pre-dawn hour. The music
starts simply and slowly,
thengrows increasingly
animated as the sky
lightens and the horizon
shimmers with color. The
movement explodes in a
massiveflurry of activity
when the sun crosses the
horizon; this energy
eventually fades as the

first time I saw an
alpenglow, I had no idea
what it was. It was the
late 1980s, and I was at
a music camp at the base
of theRocky Mountain
National Park in
Colorado. A few of us got
up in the middle of the
night so we could hike to
a vantage pointat the
foot of Longs Peak, to
watch the sun rise
without any trees
obstructing our view.
Even though we had a few
moreminutes to go before
the sun breached the
horizon, when I looked up
at the face of Longs
Peak, it was glowing
intensely with amost
beautiful peach-pink
color. This enchanting
vision lasted only about
ten minutes, after which
the color faded as the
sunrose. Throughout the
next thirty years,
whenever I returned to
the Rocky Mountain
National Park, I would
occasionally catchthis
pre-dawn light show in
all its glory.An
alpenglow is an optical
phenomenon that is
visible on high altitude
mountains. It happens
twice daily, right before
the sunrises and right
after it sets. The
earth’s atmosphere
scatters the sun’s
light, allowing
particular wavelengths of
light through
andblanketing the
mountains in rich hues of
peach, pink, red, and
purple.Alpenglow opens
with First Light. This
movement begins in the
pre-dawn hour. The music
starts simply and slowly,
thengrows increasingly
animated as the sky
lightens and the horizon
shimmers with color. The
movement explodes in a
massiveflurry of activity
when the sun crosses the
horizon; this energy
eventually fades as the
sun rises in the sky. In
Arc of the Sun,we follow
the sun as it
energetically leaps and
surges upwards in the
sky. The music moves

From majestic
to pastoral to
dance-like, Land of the
Long White Cloud is
Philip Sparke's
representation of New
Zealand. This piece is a
wonderful addition to the
concert band
repetoire.
Long
before Europeans ventured
out of sight of land, the
bold and restless
ancestors of the Maori
people were making
voyages of thousands of
miles across the world's
greatest oceans. It was
around 1000 AD that they
landed in New Zealand.
The discovery of New
Zealand is attributed in
Maori tradition to Kupe
and the circumstances of
the landfall gave the
country its Maori name.
As land was approached, a
long, flat volcanic cloud
could be seen. Kupe's
wife Hine-te-aparangi,
looked to the horizon and
cried out, He ao! He ao!
A cloud! A cloud! The
name of Aotearoa was
given to the islands -
The Land of the Long
White Cloud. Land of the
Long White Cloud was
originally conceived as a
brass band work as a
result of a commission by
the New Zealand Brass
Band Association for
their National
Championships held in
1980 in Christchurch.
This transcription by the
composer was commissioned
by Keith Allen and
Birmingham Schools' Wind
Orchestra who gave the
first performance in the
Adrian Boult Hall,
Birmingham, England on
Sunday 15 May 1988. $15.00 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 3 to 4 weeks | | |
