'The title refers both to my trip to Greece and also to the way in which the musical ideas interact with each other and evolve throughout their long journey,' he says. Zingaresca A czardas-influenced work which is full of the fire and passion of the typical Gipsy idiom. Zingaresca offers much for the advanced bassist and would be ideal for conservatoire or university students who are confident playing throughout the solo range of the instrument. A slow and lyrical introduction leads into a rhythmic and lively czardas these with opportunities to demonstrate both musical and technical prowess in equal measure. Ideal as the final work in a recital and performed many times by the composer. The edition includes piano accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tunings. Performance Level: Advanced Miloslav Gajdos is one of Europe's most active and inventive bassist-composers. He was born in northern Moravia in 1948 and initially learned violin before transferring to the double bass, studying with Alois Kriz, Jiri Bortlicek and Ludwig Streicher. He has been Professor of Double Bass at the Vejvenovsky Conseravtoire in Kromeriz (Czech Republic) since 1971, and was a member of the Olomouc Symphony Orchestra for a number of years. He is Director of the Gregora International Double Bass Competition, founded in 1979 and held every two years in Kromeriz, and has been a juror at many competitions in Hungary, Germany and the Czech Republic. Miloslav Gajdos is a prolific composer and arranger and, for almost 40 years, has produced a vast body of original works and transcriptions for double bass which are performed worldwide. His original works combine Czech lyricism and melody with brilliant technical demands, and music from one to sixteen double basses. He writes in a traditional and accessible style, producing music for every level of performer, particularly for the advanced bassist, and his many works for unaccompanied double bass are frequently chosen as international competition repertoire. Elegia is a small piece for Oboe and Piano accompaniment by Nino Rota . Really lyrical, its medium difficulty will enable intermediate players to execute it, for a recital or for a contest. This lovely work is quite slow, nostalgic at some points and ends up on a perfect harmony between the two instruments. Nino Rota (1911-1979) is an Italian composer and conductor, particularly known for his works on film music. Many years ago, on a suggestion from Marine Band tubist John Cradler, I wrote a quirky collection of tunes set in the lower register of the tuba That book, published in 1991, 'mimics to be popular beyond my wildest dreams with players of all age levels and ability. Its success exposed a void in studies with actual music in the extreme lower part of the tuba range, a part of the instrument that is so important in the music of Prokofiev, Wagner and other composers. The ability to read notes (on sight!) of 4 and 5 ledger lines had only been previously addressed with repetitive exercises and academic method books. The embarrassing gap between that first volume and today's long-awaited and requested second book is only the fault of yours truly, who until recently didn't think there was a sincere desire for a second book. When I did decide to start writing, I was conflicted over which direction to go: Low Vol. 2? Low(er!) Etudes? Higher Lyrical? Orchestral Excerpt-Based Etudes? Duets? I finally decided on this combination of Lou/(er!) Etudes with accompanying duets that give the player a break from the ultra low writing, and provide a chance to revisit the well-loved tunes of the first book with fresh harmonies. I hope you enjoy what I've finally come up with and accept my apologies for taking so long to do it! My sincere thanks to tubists everywhere for making these tunes part of your music-making over the years. This long-awaited Low(er!) Etudes for Tuba includes more of the melodies Phil Snedecor is known for composing.
