The so-called Köthener Trauermusik (Cöthen funeral music) was performed at the memorial service for Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen on 24 March 1729. The history of reconstruction begins in the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1873 Wilhelm Rust, co-editor of the first Complete Bach Edition and subsequently Thomaskantor, established the fundamental relationship between the Köthener Trauermusik on the one hand and the St. Matthew Passion and Trauerode BWV 198 on the other.In the service of concert practice, it is the intention of this attempted reconstruction to enrich the repertoire of church music for Passiontide and the period around the Sunday before Advent, on which the dead are commemorated. It is also hoped that it will contribute to the understanding of Bach's 'Great Passion?, whose sister work the Köthener Trauermusik is. / Chant and Piano

Cornelius Gurlitt is one of the co-founders of 19th-century piano teaching. Going on from the method of Carl Czerny, his rich educational material is extremely topical even today. Der Anfänger is a collection of little pieces for four hands with an easy primo and a somewhat more difficult secondo part which are ideal for music lessons at elementary and intermediate levels or as duos for pupil and teacher. In the primo part, the hands for the most part play in unison - due to an inventive harmonic accompaniment, however, the little pieces become musically interesting exercises. The level of difficulty increases with regard to rhythm, articulation, time and key as well as dynamics and possibilities of musical interpretation. Par PART ARVO. Arvo Pärt wrote the prayer of peace 'Da pacem Domine' to fulfil a commission from Jordi Savall. He began to set this ninth-century Gregorian antiphon two days after the Madrid bombings on 11 March 2004 as his personal tribute to the victims. Since then 'Da pacem Domine' has been performed every year in Spain to commemorate the victims of this terrorist attack. Even while originally composing this four-voice piece, Pärt made allowances for variable scorings. As a result, it exists in several versions, not only for voice but also entirely for instruments. The Maccabaean Revolt in the second century B.C. provided the background to the story that unfolds in Judas Maccabaeus . It is part of the history of the Ptolemaic and Seleucid Empires. This oratorio follows the story from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. up until Judas' march on Jerusalem in 164 B.C. With a libretto supplied by Thomas Morell, Handel's great work was first performed at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, on April the 1st, 1747, as part of his annual Lenten season of oratorios. By the time of Handel's death in 1759, Judas Maccabaeus had become the composer's second most popular oratorio, having received 33 London performances under the composer's supervision ( Messiah had 36). Zelenka: Miserere in C minor ZWV 57 Breitkopf Urtext ed. by M. Hutzel und Thomas Kohlhase The Miserere in C minor ZWV 57 is one of the late works of the Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka. According to an entry in the autograph score, it was completed on 12 March 1738 and thus chronologically takes its place between the Missa Sanctissimae Trinitatis (1736) and the Missa votiva (1739). It was the only late work by Zelenka to be reprised in Dresden?s Hofkirche after his death. Zelenka's artistic personality, his biography and his compositional style are utterly distinctive. His style is highly experimental. Was Zelenka really one of the greatest composers of the 18th century, or only one of the most interesting? I think that he still has several surprises for us.
