Thanks to the low grade of difficulty of this piece this it is possible to play in a ‘real band’ after only a few lessons. Because of the four-part instrumentation, Cyclist in Moscow is suitable for smaller strengths, taking into account that it is important to divide parts evenly among the players. Par CHOSTAKOVITCH DIMITRI. Shostakovich's last work, the Sonata For Viola And Piano Op. 147, is a superbly crafted Sonata in three movements with, unusually, a slow Adagio movement for the third. It was dedicated to the violist Fyodor Druzhinin, a professor of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and a member of the Beethoven String Quartet, a renowned Moscow ensemble that played at the premieres of most of Shostakovich’s string quartets. The pianist and composer Alexander Rosenblatt (*1956) from Moscow loves to cross frontiers, trying to overcome in his piano and chamber music works the rigid barriers between classical and jazz music. It was precisely in this spirit that he wrote his Tango for clarinet and piano. It is a virtuoso, exciting and quite effective piece which deliberately puts the possibilities of performance and sound to the extreme. Symphonic Fragment for Orchestra. Par SHCHEDRIN RODION. Emotional depth and riveting virtuosity - these elements are what characterise many compositions by Rodion Shchedrin. Even though he has been a cosmopolitan for a long time, the Moscow-born Shchedrin has remained an original Russian composer whose bond with the musical folklore and poetry of his home country has never been severed. This 'Symphonic Fragment', premiered by Mariss Jansons with the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, refers to the life of Beethoven and the first major existential crisis of the then 31-year-old composer from Vienna. Even if Shchedrin fails to include explicit quotations, suggestions of Beethoven's 'Eroica' can well be found. The study score on sale now allows one to become thoroughly acquainted with Shchedrin's masterly skills as a composer and his virtuoso treatment of the orchestra in this work./ Répertoire / Orchestre

There is no rose of such virtue is an anonymous mediaeval text, already well known through beautiful settings by Britten (in his Ceremony of Carols), John Joubert and others. The poem is 'macaronic' (it presents a verse in English, followed by a varying Latin refrain). This new version follows the illustrious examples above by remaining strophic and presenting broadly the same music in a succession of slightly different guises. The first verse is a straightforward four-part setting, the second gives the melody to the tenors and surrounds them with hushed, wordless writing for the other parts, and the third explores a freely canonic relationship between the tenor and soprano lines before carrying the previous verse-endings to a higher, more exalted pitch and mood. The fourth verse then expands its texture in a free climactic passage evoking the songs of praise sung by the angels. This subsides towards the final verse, where the texture of the music attenuates again to four parts, and canonic writing (based on the first four notes of the original melody) permeates all of them. This slightly extended statement leads to a hushed final cadence. Francis Pott (b. 1957) began musical life as a chorister at New College, Oxford. He held open music scholarships at Winchester College and at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he studied composition with Robin Holloway and Hugh Wood while pursuing piano studies privately in London with the distinguished British artist, Hamish Milne. Throughout the 1990s Francis was John Bennett Lecturer in Music at St Hilda's College, Oxford, and a lay clerk in the Choir of Winchester Cathedral. In 2001 he became Head of London College of Music, University of West London, later leading research across the University's Faculty of Arts and acceding in 2007 to its first Chair in Composition. Francis Pott has become recognised particularly for his sacred choral and organ music. This has been performed in concert and on radio in over three dozen countries worldwide, published by four major UK houses and released extensively on CD. Winner of four national composition awards, in 1997 he received first prize in the piano solo section of the S. S. Prokofiev Composing Competition, Moscow. In 2006 and 2011 he was a nominated finalist in the BASCA/BBC Annual Composer Awards. In summer 2012 he was winner of the international composing competition of the Cheltenham Festival, which sought new piano variations on the arioso song Bist du bei mir, well known in the arrangement by J. S. Bach. Francis lives with his wife and two children on the outskirts of Winchester. Par RACHMANINOV SERGEI. This large four-movement work, written in 1893, was premiered by Rachmaninoff and Pavel Pabst in Moscow. It is dedicated to Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. A few lines of poetry by Romantic poets preface each movement. The theme of love in the first two movements is brought to life by the two pianos with colorful, passionate writing. The final two movements feature the sound of bells---the third movement inspired by cathedrals bells that Rachmaninoff heard as a youngster, and the fourth movement capturing the jubilant sound of Easter carillon./ Répertoire / 2 Pianos

Par CHOSTAKOVITCH DIMITRI. Festive Overture was composed in 1954 to commemorate the 37th birthday of the October Revolution of 1917. With this overture Shostakovich shows his brighter side, in contrast to his melancholy 10th symphony written in the previous year. The premiere of this piece took place on November 6, 1954 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Shostakovich makes great use of different themes which he alternates and intermingles in a masterly way. Six Sonatas for recorder (transverse flute) & harpsichord, edited as facsimile and new edition by Paul Wåhlberg. The Sonatas by the Zerbst composer (born in Wittenberg) were composed for recorder and published in 1716 in Köthen. Only the Sixth Sonata in G Major could have been intended for the then increasingly popular transverse flute, since it clearly differs in various ways from the other five sonatas. The only completely preserved copy was recently discovered by Pavel Serbin in the Russian State Library in Moscow. A rewarding discovery of Central-German flute music. ? Par KOSHKIN NIKITA. Born in 1956 in Moscow, guitarist Nikita Koshkin is one of Russia's leading composers, teachers and concert artists. This collection includes works from throughout his 30-year career as a composer including his three-movement Hispanic Suite, one of his earliest compositions. The other compositions included in this volume are: Pan, Tristan Playing the Lute, Romance, and a five-movement suite called The Ballads: Suite for Solo Guitar. Koshkin uses dropped-D tuning in several of these pieces and favors rhythmic variety and stylistic diversity.
