Par BAY WILLIAM. This is a collection of 155 solos for trumpet, cornet, or flugelhorn. Ninety-one were recorded on various trumpets, 37 were recorded on cornet and 27 on flugelhorn. One hundred and fourteen are original compositions and the remaining 41 are arrangements on favorite hymns and sacred songs. A warm-up study is also included. This compilation comprises 6 books; Trumpet Chants; Trumpet Tone Poems, Trumpet Ballads and Waltzes, Trumpet Partitas, Soliloquies for Flugelhorn, Trumpet or Cornet, and Hymns for Unaccompanied Trumpet. Many of the pieces have been revised and new ones have been added. Each book was recorded with a different instrument although Trumpet Ballads and Waltzes and Trumpet Partitas were both recorded with a cornet. However, a different mouthpiece was used for each of those two recordings, thus giving each a slightly different sound. Both the instrument and the mouthpiece used are noted on the title page of each section. Most of the selections are aimed at developing tone and lyricism on the trumpet. However, Trumpet Partitas definitely addresses technical issues. There is a wealth of music in this collection, and it will add much to trumpet practice and performance repertoire. Cette curiosité organologique serait certainement déjà tombée depuis longtemps dans l’oubli le plus total si précisément Franz Schubert n’avait pas composé sa sonate en La mineur pour cet instrument. Et cette oeuvre en trois mouvements est vraiment immortelle. Mais elle pose aussi un problème pour l’Urtext, car sans certaines interventions dans le texte, la partie d’arpeggione originale ne pourrait être exécutée sur l’instrument le plus proche au niveau du timbre, àsavoir l’alto ou le violoncelle. La maison d’édition G. Henle résout ainsi le dilemme: d’une part, la partie d’arpeggione originale est superposée à la partie de piano originale (partition), de l’autre, dans la partie séparée jointe à la partition les rares changements d’octaves indispensables sont clairement indiqués. Il était hors de question pour nous d’envisager une autre partie – le violon par exemple (comme dans l’édition Diabelli parue après la mort du compositeur), la flûte ou tout autre instrument mélodique à tessiture aiguë – car toutes ces alternatives s’écartent trop des représentations de timbre que pouvait avoir Schubert. SOLO TUNING See RM722 for Orchestral Tuning The 'Dragonetti Concerto' was first published in 1925 by Alphonse Leduc in Paris as No.23 of Edouard Nanny's 'Les Classiques de la Contrebasse'. For many years no one questioned its authenticity, but as more research into Dragonetti's original works for double bass was made, concerns began to arise. Many of Dragonetti manuscripts survive in the British Library, thanks to Vincent Novello who donated them in 1849, three years after Dragonetti's death and on Novello's retirement to Italy, but there is no original manuscript for this work. As bassists began to edit and perform a wide range of Dragonetti's works it became clear that this concerto bore little resemblance to any of his other pieces. The work does, however, have many similarities to Nanny's Concerto for double bass, also to his other solo works and even studies from his Method. Eventually most people came to the conclusion that this work is not an original work by the great Venetian bassist but is by Edouard Nanny, and in the style of the late 18th-century. Having said that, this is still a charming and evocative work which has much player and audience appeal and is very easy on the ears. Many of the challenges for the soloist are technical and, almost a century after its first publication, it is still as popular as ever. Published in 1925, the first movement was performed at London's Wigmore Hall on 15 April the following year by Victor Watson (double bass) and Sidney Crooke (piano), and was described a 'Contrabass Concerto by Dragonetti-Nanny. ERRATA: Piano part: page 8 (1st movement), bar 87 - final chord of bar in right hand should be D/E/G# - a dominant 7th chord in A major Edouard Nanny was an important French double bassist and teacher, also composing and transcribing many works for double bass. He was born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye on 24 March 1872 and he studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Professor Verrimst, also teaching there from 1920-1940. He performed often as a soloist, also working as an orchestral bassist with many orchestras such as the Paris Symphony Orchestra, Concerts Lamoureux and the Orchestra de l'Opera Comique, and in 1901 he founded the Henry Casadeus Society of Old Instruments, chaired by Camille Saint-Saens, and intended to revive the works from the past centuries. Nanny's Method for double bass is still in print, over 90 years since its first publication and both volumes contain a wealth of excellent technical studies and exercises which are as relevant today as they were in the 1920s. His other volumes of studies are mostly out of print and Recital Music plan to reprint some of his orginal works for double bass, transcriptions and educational music to keep alive the name of Edouard Nanny into the 21st-century. Edouard Nanny died in Paris in 1942.

With Il Teuzzone, RV 736, the collected edition of operas by Antonio Vivaldi gains a new volume that brings to completion the pair of operas written by the ?Red Priest? for Mantua. Premiered during the last days of 1718, the opera preceded by a few months the production of Tito Manlio, RV 738 (PR 1411). This edition of Teuzzone, the first in modern times, is based on the two complete sources to have survived: a copy originating from the composer?s own archive (Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria di Torino, Raccolta Mauro Foà 33) and the one today housed in Berlin (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin ? Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Musikabteilung, N. Mus, ms. 125), which was made for the Mantuan production. Additionally, numerous secondary sources have been collated. An appendix to the volume contains the musical materials discarded by Vivaldi during the period preceding the opera?s premiere. The supporting texts for the edition report on new findings that have emerged from archival and documentary research. It has been established, for instance, that the aria Tu, mio vezzoso (I.03) is a borrowing from Alessandro Severo by Antonio Lotti, while the aria Tornerò, pupille belle (II.02) is a reworking of Nelle mie selve natie, an aria in Scanderbeg, RV 732. These examples reveal the pasticcio-like nature of this Vivaldi opera. In the section concerned with the description of the sources, which includes a meticulous codicological examination of the source in Turin, a bold attempt has been made to reconstruct the phases that the composition of Vivaldi?s opera underwent, an operation that sheds light on the inner workings of Vivaldi?s atelier. In addition, the close relationship of this score to a work with the same title staged in Turin with music by G. Casanova and A. S. Fiorè is analysed./ Répertoire / Chant et Piano

It is a bit of a paradox: one of Dragonetti's showpiece, 'The Famous Solo?, originally for double bass and orchestra, is largely unknown today. This cannot be down to the virtuoso work itself, but is more likely due to the unclear source situation with its different versions.
