“Bohu
slav Martinu (1890-1959)
was a prolific Czech
composer, writing many
large scale works. The
composer moved to Paris
in 1923 where he began
experimenting in a
variety of composition
styles. Pastorales for
Cello and Piano was
published in 1931 and is
made up of six pieces.
Martinu himself was a
violinist and the
beginning of his
experiments in composing
for solo instruments saw
him write for strings.
Pastorales for Cello
exemplifies the
composer's influence of
Stravinsky, Debussy
neoclassicism, surrealism
and jazz. The piece is
excitingly virtuosic in
its use of double stops,
complex rhythms,
chromaticism, and
ensemble between the
Cello and Piano. As a
varied, substantial work
for the Cello repertoire,
Martinu's Pastorales is
essential for the
advanced
performer.â€.

French
composer and conductor,
Henri Tomasi (1901-1971)
published Three
Pastorales for Flute Trio
in 1964. As with his
other wind compositions,
Three Pastorales was
well-received by
audiences. Tomasi was
born in Marseille, but
his Father and Mother
were originally from La
Casinca in Corsica.
Despite being pressured
in to musical studies by
his parents, Tomasi
dreamed of becoming a
sailor, and during the
summer, he stayed with
his Grandmother in
Corsica where he learnt
traditional Corsican
songs. However, in 1921,
he began his studies at
the Paris Conservatoire
and went on to become a
high profile composer and
conductor. Tomasi did not
forget his Corsican
routes, often
incorporating themes of
the songs he had learned
during the summers with
his Grandmother in to his
compositions. The Three
Pastorales are named; 1)
Bolivian, 2) Cretan, and
3) Sicilienne. This
Tomasi piece is suitable
to an advanced Flute
Trio, providing an
exciting alternative
addition to the ensemble
repertoire..

“Cont
e Pastorale is a piece
for Oboe and Piano
accompaniment by
Eugène Bozza.
Dedicated to F. Legrand,
a professor at the
Valenciennes
Conservatoire, this work
is quite difficult and
would be ideal for upper
intermediate/advanced
players. It is divided in
three parts: 1. Moderato
2. Andantino 3. Allegro -
Scherzando This volume
features the score and
parts. It is a really
nice for concerts and
recitals. Eugène Bozza
won different prizes at
the Conservatoire de
Paris such as the First
Prizes for the Violin,
conducting and
composition, as well as
the Grand Prix de Rome.
He composed several
operas, chamber works and
ballets among
others.â€.

“Past
oral and Harlequinade for
Woodwind trio of Flute,
Oboe and Piano was
written by Eugène
Goossens. Difficult to
play, it is divided into
two distinct pieces: the
Pastoral (Andante con
motto) and the
Harlequinade (Allegro).
The Piano, which starts
the Pastoral on its own
during six measures, is
joined by the Flute and
followed seven measures
later by the Oboe. This
first is quite slow, with
sounds reminiscent of the
countryside. To the
contrary, the
Harlequinade begins with
the Flute and Oboe which
are then followed by the
Piano. More cheerful from
the beginning, it
features a dialogue
between the Flute, the
Oboe and the Piano. These
very lyrical pieces are a
delight to play and to
listen to and should
definitely be programed
for a recital. Eugène
Goossens was an English
composer renowned by his
peers, who also worked
for the Sydney Symphony
Orchestra. He was
knighted in
1955.â€.

Marcel Mule, it lasts 14

by advanced players. The
first section is slower
than the second half and
the full piece will
require a strong
endurance to play some of
the saxophone pieces in

This
volume presents 64
Pastorale compositions
for organ
(harpsichord/pianoforte)
of the 18th century from
Germany, Bohemia, Austria
and South Tyrol. Charming
melodies shaped by
natural notes, bordoun
basses, a
lyrical-cheerful or
sensitive tone - these
are some of the common
characteristics of the
works in this collection.
Several of them are
connected to the custom
of the Kindlwiegen or
cradle song. Those in
search of new discoveries
will also find a number
of first editions here.
Almost all of the pieces
can be played manualiter
and range from easy to
moderate level of
difficulty. Together,
both Pastorale volumes
display an impressive
kaleidoscope of the
different national
characteristics of the
pastorale and offer a
rich repertoire for
organists, not only at
Christmas time.

“Engl
ish Horn (or flute or
clarinet or alto), Violin
& Cello Rarely has a
musical work been better
characterized by its
subtitle than Nicolas
Bacri's Lyric Interlude:
'A Study in Pastoral
Style'. When, in 2008,
the composer received the
commission for a piece
with English horn from
Cecilia Benner, patron of
the Chamber Music Society
of Detroit, he
immediately thought of
the duo between this
instrument and the oboe
that Berlioz, in the
Symphonie fantastique,
placed at the beginning
of the 'Scène aux
champs', making suddenly
appear a nocturnal
country landscape where
two shepherds carry on a
dialogue on their pipes.
First performed in March
2009 at one of the Scarab
Club Concerts in Detroit,
the Lyric Interlude for
English horn, violin and
cello (Op.110a)
nonetheless proclaims
another tradition: that
of British pastoralism,
illustrated by the music
of Ralph Vaughan Williams
(1872-1958), the 50th
anniversary of his death
having just been
celebrated. This score
pays him homage of rare
sensitivity: set off by
refined counterpoint, the
undulating lament of the
beginning, rhythmically
supple, evokes the waving
wheat, as does Vaughan
Williams in the opening
undulation of his
Symphony No.3. The
lyrical effusion, briefly
interrupted by a scherzo
in 6/8, again pours out,
making the work evolve
towards a slow, ecstatic
atmosphere, close to the
last of the English
composer's Three Preludes
on Welsh Hymn Tunes. Far
from bucolic, postcard
clichés and
servile imitation, this
Lyric Interlude opens the
doors to a realm where
pure beauty reigns. The
composer also wrote
another version of this
work for English horn (or
flute, clarinet, or
viola) and piano, Op.110b
(AL 30 750)&rdquo.

include, complex rhythms,
variation in time

contrast between the two
movements. suitable for

scorings for more
difficult passages. For
all advanced flautists,
this Berthelot provides
an exciting, alternative
performance
work.&rdquo.

In the south
German-Austrian region
the Pastoral Mass of
Johann Baptist
Schiedermayr was regarded
as one of the most
well-known and beloved
works in this genre.
Engaging melodies,
passages in thirds and
sixths, and typical
pastoral motives, such as
horn calls and open
fifths, the latter a
reminder of the bourdon
of bagpipes or a
hurdy-gurdy, characterize
the movements of the
Mass. Lyrical sections,
such as the Et incarnatus
est, which is the center
of Shiedermayr's setting
of the Ordinary,
alternate with festive
passages in which
trumpets and timpani
brilliantly express the
festive joy of Christmas.
