Electronic Music Design: Robin Meier Triades is a work in concertante form for solo double bass, an ensemble of twenty-one musicians and live electronics. This piece belongs to a larger cycle for double bass begun in 2013 with Nicolas Crosse, double bassist and soloist with the Ensemble Intercontemporain. The poetic universe of this project was taken directly from Solaris, Stanislas Lem's science fiction novel written in 1961. Solaris is a planet, that orbits around two suns, with a surface entirely covered by an ocean of protoplasmic matter, presenting an absolute enigma for the scientists who have been studying it for almost a century. The ocean creates gigantic formations on its surface that scholars have given names based on their shapes and distinctive features: Longus, Mimoids, Agilus, Vertebrides, Symetriades, Asymetriades... Triades follows in the continuity of these monstrous creatures endowed with phenomenal activity and prodigious dynamics surpassing anything imaginable by the human spirit. Every gesture made by the soloist, every timbre resulting from the heightened energy coming from the double bass, is related to a characteristic type of transformation. Digital software reacts to the soloist's physical actions on the instrument in real time. After electronic transformation, the sound is amplified through a large network of loudspeakers and subwoofers positioned in dome-form to surround the audience. This setting literally plunges the audience into a realistic experience of submersion. Triades is dedicated to both Nicolas Crosse and Robin Meier, without whom this sonic universe would never have been so amply developed. Timba: Modern Cuban Conga Rhythms. Par CRUZ TOMAS. Volume III is the first educational product to tackle the complex subject of Timba, the new musical genre which has been played in Cuba since 1989. Timba represents a quantum leap for all the instruments of the rhythm section and especially the congas. The recordings of Tomás Cruz are considered the most advanced examples of Timba conga-playing and so fascinated the three coauthors that they sought out Tomás Cruz and spent a year and a half studying his style and meticulously documenting it before even considering the idea of publishing it. After many hundreds of hours of passionate research, this 'labor of love' eventually reached fruition as Volume III. Volumes II and I were then written to trace the roots of the style and to understand the path Tomás took to arrive at his phenomenal level of technical mastery and rhythmic creativity. Much more than a collection of patterns or exercises, Volume III analyzes Timba arrangements from beginning to end, explaining the role of the congas in each section, the relationship to the 'clave', and Tomasito's creative process, including an exercise which teaches the reader to invent his own Timba conga parts. After the phenomenal success of the cycle Eight Inventions for percussion instruments Op. 45, Kabeláč. embarked upon another cycle at the request of the ensemble Les Percussions de Strasbourg ? EIGHT RICERCARI (written in the years 1966?1967, with minor revisions from 1971). In this case, Kabeláč. did not merely aim for a continuation of the previous cycle ? he wanted to create a work of a different character, a new and distinctive composition. nor would he allow himself any repetition (in fact, each of Kabeláč.?s symphonies is written for a different set of instruments). In Ricercari Kabeláč. chiefly makes use of the specific qualities that percussion instruments offer the composer. Ricercari was written for one to six players and again employs Kabeláč.?s new proportional notation. The autograph of the work is kept at the Czech Museum of Music in Prague. A copy of the piece was made privately during the composer?s lifetime which was itself duplicated to provide scores for all the ensembles who included this work in their repertoire. The current edition of the score, in practice also used for performance purposes, is therefore the first ever printed edition and corresponds both to the autograph and the meticulous copy made at the time and corrected by the composer.
