Historical information about Händel's Water Music Suites is limited, but certainly these works were intended for two, possibly three, parties given by King George I on the Thames River, London, between 1715 and 1736. Händel and his orchestra played on a barge. Since then the some twenty-two separate original pieces have been organized into three Suites and nicknamed 'Water Music?, each having a separate key and likely corresponding to these river parties. This transcription of Water Music Suite II for saxophone quartet has two purposes: to make this music available to saxophonists for performance and education, and to provide in one volume the entire Suite II. The exception to the latter, because of the limits of endurance, is the exclusion of the short Adagio, a brief interlude between the fi rst two movements. Included though are the Allegro, Hornpipe, Minuet, Lentement, and Bourree. These works were originally meant for an outdoor performance, and one of the original intentions of the saxophone was to play in French military bands, also an open-air purpose. The original scoring of brass, woodwind, and string instruments (but no continuo) transcribe well for saxophones. Matching the ranges of instruments of the original to the saxophone quartet was a primary objective. In addition, this arrangement strives to disperse melodic material to all four saxophones so as to make the arrangement pleasing to all the members of the quartet while providing variety to an audience. Any dynamic, articulation, and tempo markings are to be taken only as suggestions so as to allow interpretation by the performers. The musical study and performance of all styles while using examples of composition and performance that represent excellence is necessary for saxophonists who wish to be well-rounded musicians. For the above reasons saxophonists are urged to listen to recordings of the original orchestration in order to learn and imitate proper interpretation of Baroque style. There are currently a number of excellent recordings of Handel's Suites on period instruments, such as (but not limited to) those by conductors John Eliot Gardiner, Christopher Hogwood, and the ensemble Tafelmusik. In seguito, oltre ad avere pubblicato quasi la totalità delle composizioni del Prete Rosso l'Istituto veneziano ha corretto e attualizzato le sue più antiche edizioni alla luce delle nuove conquiste musicologiche e con una precisa attenzione a quelle che erano le istanze che provenivano dagli esecutori 'storicamente informati'. Giuseppe Tartini non ha goduto di altrettanta fortuna. Dopo alcune edizioni assai poco accurate (si potrebbe parlare piuttosto di reinterpretazioni, quali furono tra le altre quelle del leggendario violinista Fritz Kreisler e di Riccardo Zandonai), legate prevalentemente alla sopravvivenza ottocentesca di alcuni brani (in particolare il Trillo del Diavolo, la Didone Abbandonata e le variazioni L'Arte dell'Arco) nel corso del XX secolo poche edizioni davvero attendibili sono state date alle stampe, in primis quelle della collana a cura di Edoardo Farina e Claudio Scimone (Le opere di Giuseppe Tartini, Carisch) ma anche grazie all'azione isolata di violinisti (Giovanni Guglielmo) e musicologi (Enrica Bojan e Agnese Pavanello). Ancora oggi siamo ben lontani dalla possibilità di avere una moderna e completa edizione dell'opere del Maestro delle Nazioni anche se grazie all'instancabile lavoro di Sergio Durante e con l'istituzione del 'Comitato Tartini 2020' si intravedono nuovi slanci e grandi opportunità. La mancanza di edizioni attendibili per gli interpreti si è sovente riverberata sulle esecuzioni - fossero queste inserite in saggi scolastici, concorsi internazionali o recital dei più noti virtuosi - al punto che è stato quasi impossibile liberare le opere tartiniane da tutta una serie di istrionismi e di stilemi ottocenteschi che ormai si erano profondamente radicati alla percezione di queste opere. La presente edizione mira quindi non tanto a fornire una nuova edizione critica (talune, ottime, già esistono) di queste quattro Sonate che sono state scelte per la loro notorietà, rappresentatività e bellezza quanto piuttosto a garantire agli interpreti, siano essi giovani studenti o affermati professionisti, un testo coerente e corretto. Per questo motivo in aggiunta ad una parte di violino priva di segni interpretativi abbiamo ritenuto utile introdurre una seconda parte di violino con diteggiature ed indicazioni dinamiche che potranno essere di giovamento sia per gli interpreti 'tradizionali' che per quelli interessati alle prassi esecutive storiche. Elgar was pre-eminently the composer of large forms. Complex, lengthy development of musical ideas was for him a measure of genius. His songs, with the exception of the orchestral cycle Sea Pictures , were not often the vehicles for his most striking ideas. Paradoxically, he was also bedevilled by a fine literally taste. He once told a friend that he felt it better to set the best second-rate poetry to music, for the most immortal verse is music already. Some of his songs are therefore settings of poets now all but forgotten, such as Arthur Salmon and Gilbert Parker: to their verse his music might make a vital addition. Elgar's songs offer authentic Edwardian reflections which we can value now in their own terms.
