Westminster Williamson
Voices joined a
consortium called
“The Scattered
Light Consortiumâ€
along with Jo-Michael
Scheibe at USC (the USC
Thornton Chamber Singers)
and Jamie Glasgow (The
Glasgow School of Art
Choir). I was attracted
to the concept not only
because of the composers
who are dear friends, but
because the pieces were
set to poems by one of
America’s greatest
poets, Dana Gioia. When
the two works arrived
from composer Sarah
Rimkus and Thomas LaVoy,
I had, as they say,
“the wind knocked
out of me.†While
both poems could be
interpreted using a
broader life perspective,
they spoke to me and the
choir in ways that were
immediately deep and
profound. Both poems
provide light and hope to
all of us who are living
through this change at
Westminster into
something unknown. And
then, shortly after this
recording was completed,
the pandemic struck and
we were in isolation from
our music-making family.
We were thankful that we
were able to complete
this recording. Â All
of the music on the CD
reflects our hope for the
future as we climb a
crooked ladder leading
to, hopefully, a brighter
new time for our beloved
college, and our lives
beyond the pandemic. Our
desire is to see a
glimmer of light behind
what seems a very closed
door. This CD offers
music for personal
reflection, with the hope
that these sounds can
provide for each of us
“scatteredâ€
new light. Â CONTENTS:

785147005629. I
suppose as artists we are
always searching for
metaphors that speak
directly to the musics we
perform to guide us and
inspire. The music on
this CD pushes our
boundaries of what could
be considered normal
music making and instead
moves us into sound
worlds that expand what a
choral ensemble can
produce. This recording,
which documents an almost
three-year exploration
into improvisation in
various forms, contains
works for choral
ensembles that create new
sound worlds in and of
themselves. We are happy
to present to the world a
young composer from our
midst, Sam Scheibe. His
virtuous setting of O
magnum mysterium
introduces a gifted and
deeply insightful
compositional voice.
Sanctitude is an
expansive improvisation
combining choir, soprano
saxophone, Gregorian
chant, Arabic chant, and
melodies into a sound
world that I hope will
document the frontier of
a new world of choral
performance. The
techniques employed in
this improvisation are
documented in the new
text Discovering Choral
Improvisation through
Chant (GIA, 2020). The CD
opens with a
three-movement work, The
Dreams That Remain by
Thomas LaVoy, yet another
composer from the
Williamson Voices family
who has adapted the sound
world of this ensemble
into a work of beauty and
honesty. All of the works
on this CD create Auroras
of their own that touch
us deeply and cover our
senses with streamers of
light. I thank my friend,
James Whitbourn, for
conducting on three of
the tracks and for
crafting the Sanctitude
improvisation. Hopefully
the sounds on this CD
will, as Makoto Fujimara
says, bring you outside
of yourself, and pull you
to look at the [life's]
horizon and to see
beyond. — James

German. Bis vor
wenigen Jahren wurde der
Schauspielmusik,
abgesehen von einzelnen
herausragenden Werken,
von der Musikwissenschaft
kaum Beachtung geschenkt;
eine historiographische
Gesamtdarstellung bzw.
editorische
Auseinandersetzung steht
noch aus. Gerade das
letzte Drittel des 18.
und das erste Drittel des
19. Jahrhunderts konnen
als eine Blutezeit der
Schauspielmusik angesehen
werden. In diesen
Jahrzehnten entstand
nicht nur eine
unuberschaubare Menge
solcher Kompositionen;
die Problematik der
musikalischen Untermalung
bzw. Bereicherung des
Sprechtheaters wurde auch
im asthetischen Diskurs,
anknupfend an Gottsched,
Scheibe und Lessing,
immer wieder
thematisiert. Am Beispiel
ausgewahlter Buhnenwerke,
beginnend mit
Kompositionen von Johann
Andre, G. J. Vogler und
J. F. Reichardt bis hin
zu Mendelssohn, Lortzing
und Wagner, wird
deutlich, wie
verschiedenartig die
Anspruche von Autoren und
Theaterleitern in Bezug
auf die Schauspielmusik
sein konnten, und wie die
unterschiedlichen
Moglichkeiten der
Theater-Ensembles die
Komponisten
beeinflussten. Die Spanne
reicht von weitgehend
beliebigen Arrangements
mit grosstmoglichem
'Wiederverwendungswert'
bis hin zu gross
angelegten 'analogen', d.
h. ausschliesslich auf
ein bestimmtes Schauspiel
bezogenen, vorbildhaften
Kompositionen (z. B.
Beethovens Egmont, Webers
Preciosa, Mendelssohns
Sommernachtstraum-Musik).
Besonderes Interesse gilt
der Problematik der
Edition von
Schauspielmusiken, die
durch ihre enge Bindung
an das Drama einen
fachubergreifenden
Austausch unter
Literatur-, Theater- und
Musikwissenschaftlern
erforderlich macht. Hier
zeigt sich, dass kaum
eine 'Patentlosung' zu
finden ist; vielmehr
stellt jeder Komponist,
jedes Werk andere
Anspruche an den Editor.
Ausgehend von einem
Grundkonsens, der die
wechselseitige
Bedingtheit von Drama und
Musik unterstreicht,
fuhren nur individuelle,
vom einzelnen Werk
ausgehende Strategien zu
einer adaquaten
Wiedergabe in der
Edition. $76.95 - Voir plus => Acheter

ibe’s three
sonatas for flute (or
violin) and obbligato
harpsichord were
published by Haffner in
the late 1750’s,
but were probably
composed much earlier;
they contain a
significant quantity of
elaborate imitative
writing that is out of
character with
Scheibe’s later
music. Although rooted in
the same tradition as the
sonatas for flute and
obbligato harpsichord by
J.S. Bach, C.P.E Bach,
and composers at Berlin
court of Frederick the
Great, these are more
substantial works, each
having four movements in
the traditional
slow-fast-slow-fast
scheme. For the most part
they are trio sonatas,
the right hand of the
harpsichord acting as the
second treble voice, but
several movements feature
idiomatic writing for the
keyboard. Also
interesting is the large
amount of ornamentation
called for, particularly
in the harpsichord part.
While Scheibe disapproved
of the excessive
embellishments that Bach
actually wrote into his
melody lines, these
sonatas are nonetheless
heavily ornamented,
albeit through the
insertion of notational
symbols; in addition to
turns and mordents,
Scheibe uses no less than
three different trill
symbols! $42.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 4 to 6 weeks

5 balances SATB
literature with works for
women’s and
men’s choirs, and
includes a healthy mix of
selections aimed at
bringing greater
attention to the rich
choral culture in Canada.

this volume also includes
chapters that cover:

—Makoto Fujimura,
from the Foreword Twenty
years after the
publication of his
landmark work The
Musician’s Soul,
James Jordan returns to
themes of musicianship,
human connection, and
artistry—but with
depth and insight only
possible with twenty
years of additional
perspective. Jordan
explores our need for
humility in music making
and the importance of
“slow artâ€
for all musicians and
teachers in this fast
information age. He
reflects on the
loneliness of musicians
and draws on yoga
concepts to explore our
deepest places. And he
advocates, with
contributions from
Dominic Gregorio and Mark
Moliterno, the gift of
abundances and learning
to breathe

The Musician’s
Being, like its
predecessor, is filled
with inspiring,
thought-provoking
quotations, enlightened
ideas and insights, and a
contagious passion for
the art of music making.
Jordan has written
another profound guide to
musicianship and to
“being†that
miracle of artistry and
human experience. James
Jordan is Professor and
Senior Conductor at
Westminster Choir College
in Princeton, New Jersey,
where he conducts the

and Co-Director of the

(rider.edu/Oxford). He

and Director of Choral
Activities at the

Canada. He collaborated
with James Jordan on
several notable
publications,
