Sea of
Hope is an optimistic
work about new land
arisen from the former
Zuiderzee (the
Netherlands). In the
introduction, the sea is
conveyed in all its glory
and ferocity, through a
melody that keeps you
wondering whether it
makes you happy or sad.
Then, finally, there is a
glimmer of hope, when the
water is dammed up and
the land partly reclaimed
(by conversion into
polder land). The town of
Dronten, for instance,
develops into a place
where one day two people
meet up and fall in love.
This love is reflected in
the slow, passionate
middle movement. New life
in the town is celebrated
joyfully: the zest for
life clearly shines
through this part of the
work, followed byoptimism
and celebration in the
closing bars.

Maxwell
Davies' 'Das Rauschende
der Farbe' (The Sound of
Colour) is a reflection
on the life and work of
the German artist Paula
Modersohn-Becker who died
aged 31 in 1907. Maxwell
Davies first got to know
the artist's work whilst
on a school exchange in
Hamburg in 1951 and the
composer has since
written that
Modersohn-Becker's work
has influenced the way
that he views the
relationship between art
and the landscape in
which it is produced.
This is a particularly
significant statement for
a composer whose music is
often a response to the
land and seascape of his
adopted home in the
Orkney Isles.
Commissioned by the
Bremer Philharmoniker and
first performed by them
in 2007, the 30 minute
orchestral work in three
movements is one of the
key works by Maxwell
Davies in recent
years.

The text
for Dust came to me
in a season of
reflection. As educators
and mentors to the
generations that come
after us, we have a
responsibility to provide
tools so that others can
shape their future.
Overtime, it can become
easy to lose one's
personal vision for one's
self when influenced by
so many outside factors.
When the pressure builds,
it can almost feel like a
self-reckoning; an
opportunity to build
ourselves again. Though
we are influenced by our
surroundings, we are all
unique in our purpose and
design!These questions of
self-reflection came
first:How much of me
flows from their
blood?How much of me is
built of their flesh?How
much of me is manifested
from their dreams?And
just like our own
identities, the rest of
the poem begin to take
shape. I hope that this
text speaks to you
wherever you are in your
discovery and journey to
your most authentic
self.DustI am
rubbleCarved into my
ruins, you will find my
ancestry interwoven with
my identityHow much of me
flows from their
blood?How much of me is
built of their flesh?How
much of me is manifested
from their dreams?The
only way to my truth is
through my foundationI
rage against those who
would dare covet this
sacred spaceI am the
temple and the
monumentThis is holy
ground.I must demolish
myself.Tear down the
walls that have held up
your visions and
destroyed mine.I must
restore myself in my own
image.And when the dust
settles, you can see my
bones.Pillars of
strength, marble, and
earthWalls painted with
my blood, cracked with
time, polished like my
skin(Golden)I will not be
complete, but I will be
homethe dust settlesAnd
we build
again—Coty Raven

specially commissioned
pieces which aim to
breathe new life into a
largely neglected
component of the GCSE/Key
Stage 4 Music syllabus,
Ensemble Performance. On
Track comes complete with
a CD-Rom containing all
the parts for all the
pieces and transpositions
for any instrument, and
these parts come with a
licence for printing as
many copies as needed,
directly from the CD-Rom.
A separate 'audio' CD
also contains recordings
of every piece. The book
contains scores for each
piece and extended notes
by the composers to aid
in the preparation of the
music: there are 5 pieces
for fixed ensembles and 8
pieces for flexible
ensembles. The editor of
the compilation, Sadie
Harrison, comments:
Playing in an ensemble
with one's peers is
perhaps the most
rewarding and satisfying
thing to do as a young
performer, and it is
crucial to nurture this
element of GCSE courses
to reflect this. On Track
is a fantastic collection
of many different styles,
approaches and sounds.
There is something in
here for everybody, at
whatever level, and on
whatever instrument. This
is what GCSE Music
teachers are crying out
for, and finally here is
something that really
hits the mark. Harrison's
comments are echoed by
recent examiners' reports
from EdExcel, one of the
largest examiners of GCSE
music. They describe how
the music they heard in
examinations demonstrated
'an extreme range of
standards and revealed
evidence of the very wide
range of instruments in
use'. The AQA (Assessment
and Qualification
Alliance) Examiners'
report in 2004 warns
schools against allowing
their students to present
solo music with a piano
accompaniment played by a
teacher or with a CD
accompaniment for the
ensemble performance
component. It continues,
saying that it is of
utmost importance that
the chosen ensemble
allows the candidate to
show rapport with the
other player(s). This is
a significant requirement
with which many
[examination] centres did
NOT comply. Fixed

 Using
several versions of the
original work as
inspiration, Zack
Stachowski has
arranged The Seven
Last Words of
Christ for solo
instrument and piano,
making Haydn’s
music accessible to music
ministers who may not
have access to larger
instrumental
ensembles.  These
prayerful meditations can
be used as preludes, as
music for reflection, or
in ritual when singing is
not permitted. Though the
pieces are inspired by
the Seven Last Words
from the Cross and
find their most obvious
fit in the season of Lent
and Holy Week, the
diversity of color and
character makes them
suitable on other
occasions throughout the
entire year. Â (Since
these arrangements were
envisioned as liturgy
preludes or as
instrumental pieces
during ritual,
Haydn’s original
prelude and earthquake
movements have been
excluded due to their
overtly dramatic and
performative nature.)

This
brief a cappella choral
miniature is a reflection
on the Transfiguration of
the Lord, a Scripture
passage observed by many
Christian traditions just
prior to or during the
season of Lent (as well
as on the Feast of the
Transfiguration, August
6). Set in a largely
homophonic texture, the
piece sparkles with
occasional unexpected and
delightful chords
highlighting the wonder
of the
Transfiguration.
