A travers les années 1930 et 1940 il a réussi à naviguer d'une transition dans le style d'un son plus urbain de blues populaire auprès du public blanc. Dans les années 1950 un retour à ses traditionnelles folk-blues des racines fait de lui un des figures de proue du renouveau folk américain émergent de la musique et une star internationale.
