Latin. The
prestigious Latin psalm
setting Deus judicium
tuum (Ps. 71/72) is among
the finest from
Telemann's pen. Its
composition is associated
with the beginning of his
eight-month sojourn in
Paris in the fall of
1737, during which time
he celebrated musical
triumphs in the French
metropolis. As he himself
reported, with no little
pride, the piece was
performed twice in three
days by almost one
hundred selected people

German/English. The
cantata Nun danket alle
Gott (Now thank we all
our God) BWV 192 is based
on the text of the
well-known hymn. It is
therefore one of a small
number of chorale
cantatas which contain no
free poetic texts.
Correspondingly, there
are no recitatives
either. It has only
recently been assumed
that this three-movement
work was not intended for
Leipzig, but was actually
written in 1730 for
Bach's prestigious
position as Kapellmeister
of Saxe-Weissenfels. The
court of Duke Christian
enjoyed the its sojourn
in the newly-renovated
castle of its secondary
residence in Sangerhausen
and, at Trinity, in the
court church, celebrated
the anniversary of its
consecration with festive
music. Bach evidently
occasionally contributed
to this. The work does
not survive complete.
Even in the 18th century
a full score evidently no
longer existed, just a
set of parts, the tenor
part of which is entirely
missing. For the new
edition the missing part
has been reconstructed by
Detlev Schulten

Isaiah 35:8, Psalm
119:19, Psalm
56:8. From the
Bound for Glory
collection, this highly
recognized spiritual
carries in its essence
the longing for peace and
rest. The bittersweet
spirit is front and
center in an arrangement
replete with lyrical
keyboard and thoughtful
part writing. As the song
of the sojourner rises
and falls with the
crescendo of the words,
one imagines a homecoming
just over the hill with
each hopeful verse.

glance, this spirited
work does not seem to fit
the picture that
Beethoven's
contemporaries have
passed down to us, this
is why the work was long
looked upon deprecatingly
as a “salon
pieceâ€. In fact, it
is an
“occasionalâ€
piece in the best sense
of the word, having been
written in winter 1814/15
for the Russian Czar
Alexander I's wife, a
great admirer of
Beethoven's music. The
Czarina was sojourning in
the Austrian capital at
the time of the Congress
of Vienna. The
superficial impression of
simple, stylized dance
music disguises Beethoven
at his most
“genuineâ€,
waiting to reveal some
subtle motivic and
thematic material.
