feature, tuba players
should be positioned
front and center. To
establish a solid beat,
maracas should be played
with alternating up and
down wrist strokes, and
the claves and cowbell
should be held chest high
so that their sound
projects. Bongos should
be mounted and played
with rattan sticks, with
the smaller drum
positioned on the
player's right. If bongos
are unavailable,
timbales, pitched toms,
or snare drums with
snares off may be used. A
simplified snare drum
part is also included.

The
music allows wide
latitude for
interpretation and can
really show off the
musical imagination of
the
performer.
The
great French flautist
Marcel Moyse is credited
with adding phrasing and
barlines to his friend
Debussy's new
work.
In
classical mythology,
Syrinx was a nymph and a
follower of Artemis,
known for her chastity.
Pursued by the amorous
Greek god Pan, she
ran to a river's edge and
asked for assistance from
the river nymphs. In
answer, she was
transformed into hollow
water reeds that made a
haunting sound when the
god's frustrated breath
blew across them. Pan cut
the reeds to fashion the
first set of pan pipes,
which were thereafter
known as
Syrinx.
This
work of 2 1/2 minutes for
advanced performers can
add a new dimension to
your recital, as it is
often performed
offstage.

Melodie - Taken
from Tchaikovsky's
Souvenir d'un lieu cher,
this popular violin work
fits in quite well with
thick melodic low voice
of the tuba. The original
work began life as the
second movement of the
famous Violin Concerto,
however the composer
chose to discard and
recast it in a more
intimate setting for
violin and piano. The
lyrical melodic line,
characteristic of
Tchaikovsky, gives the
performer a great
opportunity to
demonstrate how the
tuba's power and flow can
be applied to truly sing
on the instrument. And
the more technical
moments allow the player
to show off just how deft
and nuanced the
instrument can be as
well. Allerseelen -
Strauss composed this All
Soul's Day song to fit
the poetry of the
Austrian Hermann von
Gilm. This popular art
song has since been
arranged for various
settings, from orchestras
to brass bands, but suits
the tuba's voice just
beautifully. The held
notes give time for the
tuba's sound to fill the
room while the harmonies
shift in that gorgeous
late-Romantic style. And
the climax provides the
instrument with the great
operatic moment that it
so deserves.
Zueignung -
Originating from the same
Strauss song set as
Allerseelen, this song
takes a much more
operatic turn. The
opening rolling triplets
give the piece a strong
sense of forward
momentum, carrying it as
a performer might
traverse across the
stage. History has proven
this to be one of
Strauss' best-known
songs, and the climactic
statement in the final
measures certainly gives
the tuba a great moment
to take center-stage.
Abendlied - The
ever-moody Schumann
originally composed this
piece for violin and
piano. Its slow and
halting accompaniment
allows the soloist to
demonstrate their skills
with rubato and nuanced
phrasing. As with most
Romantic music, care
should be taken to bring
out the accidentals, so
as to heighten the
dramatic tension-release
of this seemingly simple
piece. Liebestraume
- As one of Liszt's most
popular pieces of all
time, this piece is
quintessential Romantic
love song. No aspect of
the tuba or tubist is
left unexplored here. It
begins with a simple, yet
confined melody, taking
advantage here of the
tuba's warm middle-low
register. The brief quasi
cadenza section gives the
player a sparkling moment
to give the listener a
glimpse of the tuba's
technical capabilities.
The accompaniment then
gradually grows in
intensity while the tuba
elaborates on the main
theme while ramping up
the passion and strength
of the instrument's
voice. By mm. 41 and 54,
the player should be
commanding the room with
the full power of the
instrument, poured into a
sweeping melodic phrase.
After a dazzling display
of technical fluency with
the cadenza, the piece
shrinks back to its most
intimate form. The final
bars of the solo part
afford the player the
chance to display the
instrument's most
delicate and poignant
voice, before sliding
back down into the lower
register for final tonic

Off! is a short suite of
descriptive pieces, all
inspired by a short
flight from Manchester,
England to Brussels. In
the first movement we
hear the engine start,
and after the plane has
moved into position, it
takes off. The second
movement depicts the
beautiful view of the
clouds from above. It all
seems timeless and you
don't even feel as if you
are moving. The last
movement starts nervously
(I'm not a great flier!),
as the plane begins its
descent from the sky.
However, as we land
safely back on earth, the
piece ends in a flurry of
excitement and triumph,
returning to a theme
heard in the first

story of this composition
really begins with
another composition
entitled 'Play-Time' for
solo piano. I showed the
score for 'Play-Time' to
a friend, Boryana Petkova
a very talented pianist
from Bulgaria, to whom I
eventually dedicated 'the
Dancing Bear'. After
showing her 'Play-Time'
she commented that part
of it sounded like a
Bulgarian folk dance. The
potential of this
intrigued me quite a lot
so I sketched out a few
bars intent on writing
another piano piece based
around this idea (the
melodic line first heard
in the Tuba part in the
fifth bar after letter
A). However, upon
discussing these sketches
with Boryana she
mentioned they no longer
sounded particularly
Bulgarian. As this was
the main aim of the
sketches that eventually
became 'The Dancing Bear'
it is fair to say I was
slightly miffed.
Undeterred I decided to
shift focus and write for
the instrument I knew
best, the Tuba. The
'Bear' part of the title
refers to the tendency of
composers to use Tubas to
represent angry bears,
most famously in
Stravinsky's ballet
'Petrushka'. Musically it
still contains quite a
few elements of eastern
European dance including
the use of drones, some
typical scales with
flattened seconds and
sevenths as well as the
rhythmic oscillation
between bars of 2,2,2,2
and 3,3,2 quaver (8th
note) division. However,
the goal for me was to
writes a slightly
humorous piece, with a
technically demanding
Tuba part, that could
show off the musicians
abilities and still
retain the feel of a

Horizons is a spirited
tribute to the musical
heritage of the United
States Air Force. The
main theme is a variation
of the U.S. Air Force
Song (Off We Go), with a
secondary theme based on
A Toast to the Host (the
bridge of The Air Force
Song). Throughout the
work, fragments of other
Air Force-related songs
appear: Lord, Guard and
Guide (the Air Force
Hymn), Air Force Blue,
and Those Magnificent Men
in Their Flying Machines.
The original request for
this work was a daunting
task: I was asked to
create an Air Force
companion piece to Robert
Jager's Esprit de Corps
that would mirror the
style and spirit of that
landmark work. The goal
was to use elements of
our various Air Force
tunes in the same way
that Jager incorporated
The Marine's Hymn into
his work - that is, to
weave a musical tapestry
of the Air Force's
musical heritage without
ever becoming a mere
arrangement of the
original material. As a
former student of Robert
Jager at Tennessee
Technological University,
I discussed my plans for
the piece with him,
shared my progress along
the way, and sought his
guidance as I had done so
many times in the past.
He was delighted that I
managed to incorporate a
few Jager-isms into the
music, including one
direct quote from Esprit
de Corps. Although Blue
Horizons was conceived as
a dedication to the Air
Force's musical legacy,
it is also a personal
homage to my teacher and
friend, Robert Jager.
Performance Notes * If
only two flutists are
available, omit the
piccolo part and have
them play Flute 1 and 2;
in this case, Flute 1
should switch over to
piccolo (still playing
from the Flute 1 part) at
m. 81 and back to regular
flute at m. 114. If only
covering the Flute 1 and
2 parts, Flute 2 should
ignore indications to
switch to piccolo and
just play the entire work
on regular flute. * Oboe
1 and 2 parts should be
covered before adding the
English Horn part. * The
clarinet in Eb part
should not be covered
unless there are a
sufficient number of
