Following Dittersdorf (HN 759) and Hoffmeister (HN 721), Johann Baptist Vanhal and his sole double-bass concerto add a further highlight to the classical bass literature in our catalogue. The virtuoso work was transmitted only in a copy of a part owned by the famous double-bass player Johannes Sperger (1750-1812) and found in his estate, which raises a few questions on account of the many later additions in the solo part (especially concerning the octave transpositions). In our Urtext edition, Tobias Glöckler proposes a solution to this dilemma with a musical text that is outstandingly well-prepared for the performing artist. The piano reduction is printed in two keys (C and D major), which allows for performances in the solo and orchestral tuning or, at will. Moreover an additional part, written in fingering notation, has been specially designed for use with the 'Viennese tuning' customary in Vanhal's days. It allows players to use this resonant historical tuning immediately without tedious retraining. / Contrebasse Et Piano / Chanson En Séparée

Essential understandings: - Triad structures and inversions - How to select chords - chord symbols - Simple but effective voicing formulae - The circle of 4th progressions, - Extensions to the 9ths and dominant 13ths, and altered 5ths and 9ths. Included in the 107 pages are comprehensive explanations, examples, exercises and solutions. For school students, the course can be started in year 9 and worked through to year 13. 'This book certainly delivers. Mr. Griffin does a superb job giving clear and concise steps that students should take when approaching the task of harmonizing a melody. The book is laid out in a clean, easy-to-understand format. Mr. Griffin is obviously a gifted teacher, and has developed a book that would be a great resource for any music teacher or student interested in understanding and implementing more complex theory/harmony concepts.' - Natalie Wickham, Music Matters, USA. 'Particularly good for A Level pupils composing in a pop and jazz style. The material gradually increases in difficulty and there are a lot of useful exercises to be completed by students”- Music teacher, UK. 'Excellent resource which will save teachers hours of preparatory work. Useful for a general understanding of options when harmonising in composition. An essential part of KS5 harmony work which goes beyond the common chords and progressions. Very professionally set out.”- ZigZag Education, UK./ Méthode / Tout Instrument

Vocal Score / Softcover. Par VERDI GIUSEPPE. In a letter of 2 January 1851, Verdi suggested for the first time Antonio Garcia Gutierrez play El Trovador as a possible subject for his new Opera: 'It seems to me very beautiful, imaginative, and full of strong situations'. Once he had settled on the subject, the composer immediately began looking for a theater in which to produce the Opera and after protracted negotiations he decided to stage Il Trovatore in Rome. The premiere occurred on 19 January 1853 at the Teatro Apollo and was an enormous success. The appreciation of the new work increased from performance to performance. The third performance was the last the composer was contractuallyobliged to attend: at the end of the evening the audience presented Verdi with two laurel wreaths. Verdi 's account of the performances, contained in a letter to his friend Clarina Maffei, was eloquent: 'They say that this Opera is too sad and that there are too many deaths. But ultimetley in life everything is death! What exists?. . . ' Notwithstanding Verdi 's pessimism, Il Trovatore circulated rapidly. In fact, no other Opera of Verdi except 'Ernani' enjoyed such instant and widespread success./ Répertoire / Chant et Piano

Chaconne. Par LERDAHL FRED. Chaconne (2016), for string quartet, was commissione...(+)
Chaconne. Par LERDAHL FRED. Chaconne (2016), for string quartet, was commissioned by the Daedalus Quartet to celebrate its 15th anniversary. The commission was supported by New Music USA, made possible by annual program support and/or endowment gifts from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Helen F. Whitaker Fund, and Aaron Copland Fund for Music.
My music has a substantial history with Daedalus. I composed the Third String Quartet (2008) for them, and subsequently they performed my three string quartets on several occasions and recorded them brilliantly on Bridge Records (Bridge 9352: Music of Fred Lerdahl, vol. 3). Chaconne is in one movement lasting 19 minutes. It is effectively my fourth string quartet. Quartets 1-3 form a unified cycle lasting 70 minutes. When I finished the cycle, I thought I would never write again for the medium; yet I could not resist the opportunity of working again with Daedalus. The issue was how to compose another string quartet unrelated to the earlier cycle. The solution came from my solo cello piece There and Back Again (2010), which was based on a four-bar variation pattern from a 17th-century chaconne. Unlike the asymmetrical phrases and expanding variations of much of my music, the chaconne form requires symmetrical phrases and strictly periodic variations. I wished to work again with these symmetries but on a larger scale. Chaconne also differs in character and expression from the three-quartet cycle. The cycle is inward and intense, a kind of psychological excavation. Chaconne is, for the most part, transparent and playful. Many of its textures emerge from little canons, not completely unlike the rounds that children sing. Any composer who writes in chaconne form (one thinks above all of the last movement of Bach’s D minor violin partita and the finale of Brahms’s Fourth Symphony) is confronted with the challenge of how to create a larger form out of a constantly repeating pattern.
My Chaconne grows from paired antecedent-consequent phrases, each variation lasting eight bars. The 50 variations group into three large rotations, forming three arcs of tension and relaxation, with subtle parallel connections across the rotations. Notwithstanding my attraction to chaconne form, I purposefully disguised its symmetries and periodicities in order to build an overall dramatic shape. Fred Lerdahl/ Répertoire / Quatuor à Cordes

Ed. critica di Ivano Bettin - Riduzione per canto e pianoforte di A. Frigé. Par PERGOLESI GIOVANNI BATTISTA. Some few months after returning to Naples from Rome, where he had gone to follow the premiere of L'Olimpiade at the Teatro Tordinona during the 1735 carnival season, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi -- notwithstanding the quickened pace of the disease that would soon bring his brief life to a close - presented the public with a new work, Il Flaminio, a 'commedeja pe' mmuseca” set to a libretto by Gennarantonio Federico. The opera was staged as the second of season that fall at the Teatro Nuovo sopra Toledo (one of three traditional venues, together with the Teatro dei Fiorentini and the Teatro della Pace, dedicated to the production of opere bu?e), where it met with a generally favorable reception. with Rhymes for the Youngest Violinst. Par MICKOVA MAGDALENA. This little violin method was written by the well-known Czech violin teacher Magdaléna Micková for children of around five years old and incorporates her longstanding teaching experience with this age group. The child first learns to hold the violin correctly, to place the fingers on the fingerboard, to pluck the strings and use the bow. The pieces that follow consist of simple melodies that are printed with large child-friendly notes and allow fingering in the major key to be practised in first position. Rhymes are underlaid making it easier for the children to grasp the rhythms quickly. The pieces are arranged progressively until legato playing is achieved in the last piece. A valuable help are online teaching videos that Magdeléna Micková recorded with one of her students. / Date parution : 2024-01-06/ Méthode / Violon

Georg Frideric Händel 's Serse (Xerxes) has everything one would expect from a Baroque opera - many intertwining love stories, affairs, intrigues, scheming, misunderstanding and forgiving - all presented in the great master's magnificent music. The opera is set in Persia in 480 BC and is very loosely based upon Xerxes I of Persia, though there is little in either the Baroque libretto or music that is relevant to that setting, the main focus is on the characters ( Serse , Arsamene, Amastre, Romilda, Atalanta, Ariodate and Elviro - some of which are based on real historical persons) and their plotting. The English version for the opera in three acts was made for the English National Opera's production, first performed in 1985, on the 300th anniversary of Händel 's birth. In this edition of the Vocal score with the original Italian and the later English lyrics accompaniment is provided by the instruments indicated in the orchestration (2 Recorders (or Flutes), 2 Oboes, 2 Horns in F, Trumpet in D, Strings and Continuo [Harpsichord, Cello, Double Bass, Bassoon]), but can also be played by the Piano. Serse 's part, originally sung by a castrato, can be performed by a Soprano or a Countertenor. / Chant Et Piano

'La Mer?, which is an impressionistic work through and through, was composed between 1903-1905. Debussy however refined this work up until at least 1913. These corrections are found in a score which Debussy gave to his wife as a present for her private library in 1913.The new scholarly-critical edition draws on several important sources previously unavailable to musicologists, resulting in an array of new readings and corrections. In addition, there are many changes, a.o. in terms of articulation and dynamics. This new edition includes the famous 'fanfare? in Movement III, clearly marked in small print and brackets. This fanfare was excised in the 1910 reissue of the work, but was reinstated by a number of great conductors who knew Debussy, i.e. Monteux, Münch, Mitropoulos and Ansermet. They felt that the excision was a misunderstanding and that the fanfare was necessary for the structure of the movement. And so, the Bärenreiter edition presents the revival of a performing tradition which is committed to the fanfare.- New Urtext edition with numerous corrections in comparison to other editions- Important sources which were previously inaccessible have been taken into account- Score and orchestral parts in large format (25.5 x 32.5cm)- Score and orchestral parts with an impeccable generous layout- Includes an informative introduction (Eng/Fr/Ger), facsimiles, source descriptions and a Critical Commentary (Eng) / Alto

In spite of the most enthusiastic reception at the work's premiere, the famous pianist and conductor Hans von Bülow criticized Verdi's Messa da Requiem as 'an opera in ecclesiastical robes?. Nonetheless, or maybe precisely for this quality, the work has conquered concert podiums worldwide. For this scholarly-critical edition, the editor has consulted no less than 16 sources, many more than were ever used for any other edition of the Requiem - some of these sources were never evaluated before and one source, a hand-written vocal score, particularly relevant to the evaluation of the 'Liber scriptus?, was newly discovered. As such, this edition offers new philological and editorial decisions regarding phrasing, articulation and dynamics and succeeds in presenting practical suggestions to solve musical problems and those concerning the interpretation of this famous work. This edition comprises a concise Critical Commentary in the score. The most important editions published in the 19th century are compared with regard to musicological questions in the work. The genesis of some misunderstandings included in the 1913 and 1964 Ricordi editions is traced. The first version of the 'Liber scriptus? for chorus is included in the appendix while the later version for mezzosoprano solo is to be found in the main part of the edition.- Verdi's monumental work in a Bärenreiter Urtext edition- Trilingual preface (Ital/Eng/Ger)- Critical Commentary (Eng) in the score- Idiomatic well-presented piano reduction / Violon I

(VANHAL JOHANN BAPTIST) Contrebasse, Piano (duo) [Partition] G. Henle

Piano reduction. Par VANHAL JOHANN BAPTIST. It allows players to use this resonant historical tuning immediately without tedious retraining./ Répertoire / Contrebasse et Piano
