Singin' In The Rain was already a classic before it featured in the famous 1952 Gene Kelly film musical - Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown wrote it in the 1920s when many artists recorded it, but more notably Cliff Edwards enjoyed success from his recording in 1929. Now forever associated with Kelly's puddle-splashing routine and more recently reprised in stage adaptations, Singin' In The Rain remains an all-time favourite. Over the Rainbow is a standard that has become forever associated with its most famous interpreter, Judy Garland. Her troubled adult years only added poignancy to her guileless interpretation of the song, preserved on celluloid in The Wizard of Oz when she was seventeen. The song would also do something similar for Eva Cassidy whose 1992 version brought her posthumous fame almost a decade later. Blue Moon , written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in 1934, has had many treatments over the decades. Mel Tormé made a smooth hit version in the 1940s, Elvis Presley put it on his first album in 1956 and The Marcels had a doo-wop hit with it in 1961, but 'An American Werewolf in London' was the first movie to associate this most romantic of songs with lycanthropy. The parts 'Die Geburt Christi' and 'Das Leiden Christi' are presented with full orchestration. In 1852, five years after Mendelsohn’s death, two independently-performable fragments of an unfinished oratorio were published under the title 'Christus'. The second fragment, 'The Suffering of Jesus', comes from the middle of the Passion story: the scene 'Jesus before Pilot' is presented with rapid, dramatic alternation between the recitatives of the evangelist [tenor] and choruses of the people. Monteverdi's opera 'L'Orfeo', based on the legend of Thracian singer Orpheus and his love of Eurydice, is a masterpiece of musical declamation and ornamentation. It was first performed during the 1607 carnevale in the 'Palazzo Ducale' in Mantua.When an edition remains true to its sources, this certainly does not mean that it is not also practical to use, as is demonstrated in this Bärenreiter edition of Monteverdi's 'L'Orfeo'. Edited by Rinaldo Alessandrini, the new publication follows the Bärenreiter edition of Monteverdi's 'Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria'.Two contemporary prints of 'L'Orfeo' from the years 1609 and 1615 have been passed down to us. Four copies of each of these prints still survive today in public libraries. The later print includes many corrections to the earlier edition and was accordingly used as the primary source for this Bärenreiter edition. However, when solving musical problems the editor frequently follows the more coherent style of the earlier print. The numerous interesting variants, not only between the two editions but also amongst the eight surviving copies, are listed in the critical commentary.This edition of 'L'Orfeo' offers in addition to Monteverdi's somewhat sparse original figures also figures added to the bass line by the editor. The continuo player should, however, feel free to follow his own judgment. The notation has been, when necessary, adapted to suit modern practice, for example with regard to the clefs.
