Mit
Bachs 'Die Kunst der
Fuge' habe ich mich seit
vielen Jahren
beschäftigt, weniger
intensiv allerdings mit
Fragen zum Fragment der
Schlußfuge, zumal mit
deren
Vervollständigung -
eine solche hätte ich
früher kategorisch
abgelehnt! [...] Erst die
Ergänzung eines
Kölner Klavierkollegen
weckte in mir ein
weitergehendes Interesse
an dieser Problematik,
vor allem der Umstand,
daß er das Fragment
nur mit den drei von Bach
noch exponierten Themen
vervollständigte und
das Hauptthema des Werkes
außen vor ließ.
Seine Argumente: Das 1.
Thema sei bereits eine
Variante des Hauptthemas,
und mit diesem und seiner
gesonderten Exposition
vor der Vereinigung aller
vier Themen würde die
Fuge viel zu lang. Daß
es sich den drei anderen
Themen nahtlos
einfügt, halte er
für Zufall (damit
steht er nicht allein).
Also ging ich daran, die
gängigen Kombinationen
der vier Themen zu
erproben, zunächst
nur, um ihren vierfachen
Kontrapunkt zu
demonstrieren. Damit aber
war der Grundstein für
eine Vervollständigung
gelegt ... Nach insgesamt
über dreijähriger
Arbeit kann ich numehr
nicht nur die
Ergänzung selbst,
sondern auch eine Studie
zum Fragment und den
damit verknüpften
Problemen vorlegen. Meine
Absicht kann kaum darin
bestehen, mich mit Bach
messen zu wollen.Vielmehr
sollen Studie und
Vervollständigung dazu
dienen, Erkenntnisse
über Bach im
allgemeinen und 'Die
Kunst der Fuge' sowie das
Fragment im besonderen
zugewinnen. (Thomas
Daniel, aus dem
Vorwort).

Composed in
1981, this work is a
setting of a sequence
from the Mass for the
Feast of St Thomas, found
in the missal of the
Hereford use. The text is
a conventional hymn of
praise but it is
distinguished by a lively
and attractive rhythm,
and as this rhythm would
have been lost in
translation, I have set
it in the original Latin.
The work is in the form
of theme and variations
and is characterised by a
gradual crescendo
throughout. It begins
very quietly with solo
timpani and then the
choir sing the theme in
unison, unaccompanied by
flutes, bells, timpani
and lower strings.

'Six
Pieces' Op. 19 is the
first collection of piano
pieces by Tchaikovsky
which contributed
significantly to his
growing renown as most
important Russian
composer apart from Anton
Rubinstein. Famous
contemporary pianists
like Nikolai Rubinstein
and Hans von Bulow
performed Reverie du soir
(Op. 19, No. 1) or Theme
original et variations
(No. 6) in their concerts
in the 1870s.
Commissioned by his
Moscow publisher P. I.
Jurgenson, Six Pieces Op.
19 was composed by
Tchaikovsky in the summer
and autumn of 1873, i.e.
during his time as
professor of theory at
the Moscow
Conservatoire.Bulow had
entered 'little changes'
in his own copy of the
first edition of
Variations Op. 19/6.
There is, however, no
documentary proof which
of Bulow's changes
Tchaikovsky eventually
included in the Nouvelle
edition revue et corrigee
par l'auteur of Op. 19
published only in 1890.
The present new edition
therefore contains both
versions of the
Variations. Tchaikovsky's
version of the first
edition can be found in
the appendix of the
present volume, Bulow's
version expressly adopted
by Tchaikovsky is
presented together with
Nos. 1-5 in the main text
of the volume on the
basis of the Nouvelle
edition revue et corrigee
par l'auteur from
1890.

The
triumphal concert hall
success of Tchaikovsky's

teething troubles. His
Piano Concerto No. 1 Op.

by Tchaikovsky's mentor

at the premiere, the
pianist, conductor and
director of the Moscow
Conservatory, Nikolai
Rubinstein. So Hans von
Bulow premiered it
gratefully and
enthusiastically (in
Boston, USA, on 25

Auer, violin virtuoso and
professor at the
Petersburg Conservatory,
to whom Tchaikovsky
wanted to dedicate his
Violin Concerto Op. 35 of
1878, refused to premiere
it - he regarded the solo
part as unrewarding and
unplayable. On 4 December
1881, Adolf Brodsky
premiered the Violin
Concerto in Vienna, with
Hans Richter conducting,
but Eduard Hanslick wrote
a crushing and unpleasant
review. The Variations on
a Rococo Theme for Cello
and Orchestra Op. 33 were
finally published by
their dedicatee, the
German cellist and
professor at the Moscow
Conservatory, Wilhelm
Fitzenhagen, after he had
almost completely
rewritten and then
premiered it on 18
December 1877 in Moscow,
while Tchaikovsky, who
had asked him to publish
the work, was abroad. The
original version, which
can be found in this
edition, was not
published until the
1950s.
