marimba and percussion.
Time After Time was
written for the Yesaroun'
Duo (comprising
multi-percussionist Sam
Solomon & saxophonist
Eric Hewitt) and
marimbist Nancy Zeltsman.
I set out to write a
piece that was primarily
energetic and
rhythmically challenging
enough for two
percussionist and one
honorary percussionist to
play. The title refers to
the fact that all the
material recycles itself
at different speeds. The
marimba's long,
quasi-chorale lines
proceed, initially,
without noticing the
rhythmic shifts and
upheaval below. Halfway
through the piece, a
jagged marimba solo
features the instrument's
precise, dance-like
qualities, and after
being joined by the
saxophone and percussion,
propels the whole
ensemble towards the
rhythmic and harmonic
excesses of the final
section.

of New York at Buffalo,
Miles Davis Autobiography
was published.While
reading it, he suddenly

be-bop is not at all
idiomatic for string
instruments. But be-bop

is the extremely fast
tempo. This fast tempo is
really fast, because the
playing is based upon the

speed to express what he
musically felt: little
time was left for him.
This is the main
explanation of the title
of the work.In the
beginning of Facing
Death, Andriessen
literally quotes
fragments of Charlie
Parker improvisations. He

melody: Ornithology

EPIGRAMS'3 Epigrams'
(1963) came into
existence following my
piece for chamber
orchestra 'Chronos'
(1962). My purpose with
these pieces (and others
of the same period) was
to explore the sound
experiences of serialism
in space and time but
without using the
original and fundamental
substance of serialism -
the tone row. The
chromatic space was
constituted by four
identical and
complementary tone
columns (established by
transposition). The time
was divided into 25
different sizes,
plasticly conceived and
graphically notated.
These distances were then
divided in 25 new
distances in the same
proportions etc ... into
smaller and smaller
durations completely
hierarchally carried
through. This time
division, 'rhythm',
de-termines the gradual
or sudden shifts from one
tone column to
another.The 3 Epigrams
became a little play of
my own with this material
and the work is,
therefore, quite clear to
read and easy to play - a
kind of bagatelle,
really.I am now afraid
that a classic situation
is emerging: If this
programme note is any
longer it will take more
time to read this than it
will take to play the

celebrate the 200th
birthday of the
playwright Ludvig
Holberg, a statue was
erected in his honour in
1884. Edvard Grieg, who,
like Holberg, was born in
Bergen, was commissioned
to write an open-air
cantata for the ceremony.
But he also refers to
Holberg in his
instrumental music. The
result was a
“powdered wig
piece†(as Grieg
wrote to his publisher)
that hearkens back to
Holberg’s era
– a historicising
suite of baroque dances
for piano, ranging from
an exhilarating prelude
and several dance numbers
to a Bachian
“air†and an
impetuous
“rigaudonâ€. Later Grieg
arranged his “Suite
in the Olden Styleâ€
for string orchestra.
This version became one
of his most popular
compositions.

As far back
as I can remember, I have
always been fascinated
with fairy tales: with
their archetypal
characters and set
phrases like'Once upon a
time...'and'...they all
lived happily ever
after'. Fairy tales were
however also a source of
unrest for me as a
seismograph of mankinds
underlying primal fears
and desires. So as a
performer and composer I
have always felt that
Robert Schumann's
Marchenerzahlungen [Fairy
Tales] (scored for the
same instrumentation as
my own composition) was a
disjointed, complex
contemporary work -
despite the innocence and
naivety of its initial
appearance. I therefore
do not intend my own Es
war einmal (Once upon a
time...)to be a mere
sentimental, nostalgic
flight into the distant
past, but as a naive and
fantastical alternative
concept to our genuine
world with all its

Bach's
second cantata starting
with the text Come now,
God's chosen saviour (II)
BWV 62 was first
performed in 1724 on the
1st Advent Sunday (which,
at that time, was the
only Advent Sunday with
church music in Leipzig)
and belongs to the annual
cycle of chorale
cantatas. As was usual
for chorale cantatas, the
unknown librettist used
the first and last verses
of Martin Luther's hymn
verbatim for the opening
chorus and the concluding
chorale but adapted the
texts of the inner
verses. After two
contrasting arias - the
one dance-like, the
second almost heroic - an
almost enraptured
accompagnato (Wir ehren
diese Herrlichtkeit, und
nahen nun zu deiner
Krippen), in which the
soprano and contralto
mostly sing in parallel
thirds and sixths, leads
to a simple concluding
