O is going to release
another highlight in the
'Carl Orff' DVD edition
series: A film version of
Orff's first stage work
'Gisei - Das Opfer' by
the film director Peider
A. Defilla. 'Gisei' is
set in the year 902 in a
village school in Japan
and is about the
sacrificial death of a
child. Both the subject
and the Japanese culture
greatly inspired the
young Carl Orff, and he
remained an aficionado of
Japan all his life. In
the Japanese tragedies,
Orff also found numerous
references to the ancient
Greek tragedies by
Sophokles with which he
concerned himself decades
later. The DVD shows the
world premiere production
of John Dew (who was
awarded the Carl Orff
Prize 2012 only recently)
at the Darmstadt State
Theatre. Lavish costumes
as well as carefully
rehearsed facial
expressions and gestures
convey a deep impression
of this tragedy. The
following 15-minute bonus
film includes interesting
additional information on
Orff's oeuvre and
particularly on his work
on 'Gisei'. Language:

English. Considered
the greatest Italian
opera composer since
Verdi, Giacomo Puccini
(1858--1924) created many
of the most popular
operas in the repertoire,
including Madama
Butterfly, La Boheme,
Tosca, Manon Lescaut, and
Turandot. His well-known
gifts for lush melody and
rapturous lyricism, along
with his strong sense of
theater, are amply
evident in Il Trittico
(The Triptych), a series
of three highly
individual one-act operas
patterned after the
Parisian Grand Guignol's
three-part scheme of
horror, tragedy, and
farce. Il Trittico, which
premiered at New York's
Metropolitan Opera in
1918, consists of Il
Tabarro, a somber,
near-melodramatic
tragedy; Suor Angelica, a
sentimental tragedy with
strong melodies and a
mystic theme; and Gianni
Schicchi, a delightful
comedy, full of wit and
vivacity, whose libretto
was
derived---surprisingly
enough---from a few lines
in Dante's Inferno. All
three works appear in
this single volume,
reprinted from
authoritative early
editions. $34.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks

to underlie strong
feelings, passions, and
the tragedies of life.
The poem itself is
dramatic, detailing a

The music is intense,
fast, in a minor key, and
with rapid, spinning

motives, and gestures are

680160919871. Remem
brance was written in
November 2018. In
remembrance of what it
took for us to be here...
was the only original
program note. The piece
can mean different things
to different people;
however, it brings unity
to all under the theme of
remembrance. We fight for
many things: love,
patriotism, freedom,
ideology,
possession...all of which
have cost tremendous
sacrifice. It was the
battles, the blood and
sweat, and the sacrifice
of those that came before
us that created the world
as we know it.
Remembrance is a tender,
melancholic reflection
that silently gives
thanks to every step and
every sacrifice that was
made to bring us what we
have today. Yes, what we
have may not be
perfect--nor is it
anywhere near
complete--but with each
generation's
responsibility to carry
the torch and never
forget, hopefully we can
make everything worth it.
Performance Notes This
tender piece is an
excellent opportunity to
explore nuanced phrasing.
While many sections may
play similar parts, often
the phrasing and dynamics
are marked differently
across the band. Each of
these discrepancies
should be brought out and
add to the perpetual
motion of the piece.
Encourage confident, yet
subtle entrances and
furthermore, think about
the ends of notes as
important as the
beginning. Really bring
out the hairpins in
sections such as m. 29,
m. 67, and m. 81 as
expressive devices.
Despite the piece's major
key, through the various
levels of dissonance and
tension, both the
ensemble and the audience
should feel the
sacrifices and tragedy
that this piece
celebrates. The tempo
should not be much slower
than the marked tempos
and with the careful
observation of the
various tempo changes,
there should be a
constant momentum pushing
throughout the piece, all
the way past the end that
leaves the audience in
thought with an
uplifting, pensive, and
gentle clarinet
chord. Remembrance was

in the Courthouse Park is
a setting of the tragedy
The Bacchae of Euripides
that Harry Partch
completed in 1960. The
plot is in America, but
also in Old Thebes:
Partch compares American,
extremely religious

English-German-Hungari
an. In 1845 Franz
Liszt embarked on a
project to compose an
Italian opera based on
Lord Byron’s
tragedy, Sardanapalus
(1821). It was central to
his ambition to attain
status as a major
European composer, with
premieres variously
planned for Milan,
Vienna, Paris and London.
But he abandoned it half
way through, and the
music he completed has
lain silently for 170
years.
Liszt’s difficulty
in obtaining a libretto
meant that composition
only began in April 1850.
He completed virtually
all the music for Act 1
in an annotated
piano-vocal score of 111
pages, contained within
his N4 music
‘sketch
book’. The unnamed
librettist was an Italian
poet and political
prisoner, seemingly
living under house
arrest, and a close
acquaintance of Cristina
Belgiojoso. His libretto
survives as underlay in
the N4 sketchbook and has
been critically
reconstructed and
translated.
Sardanapalo is
Liszt’s only
mature opera. While he
consistently referred to
it in French, as
Sardanapale, the
published title of the
Italian opera would
almost certainly have
used the Italian name,
hence this forms the
title of the first
edition. There are three
solo roles and a chorus
of concubines. The
manuscript was previously
thought to be fragmentary
and partially illegible,
but it was finally
deciphered to
international acclaim in
March 2017.
Liszt’s score
offers a richly melodic
style, with elements from
Bellini and Verdi
alongside glimmers of
Wagner and the symphonic
poems ahead: a unique
mixture of Italianate
pastiche and mid-century
harmonic innovation. It
remains quintessentially
Lisztian. The opera sets
Byron’s tragedy
about war and peace in
ancient Assyria: the last
King, effeminate in his
tastes, is drawn to wine,
concubines and feasts
more than politics and
war: his subjects find
him dishonourable (a
‘man queen’)
and military rebels seek
to overthrow him, but are
pardoned, for the King
rejects the ‘deceit
of glory’ built on
others’ suffering:
this leads only to a
larger uprising, the
Euphrates floods its
banks, destroying the
castle’s main
defensive wall, and
defeat is inevitable: the
King sends his family
away and orders that he
be burned alive with his
lover, amid scents and
spices in a grand
inferno. As Byron put it:
‘not a mere pillar
formed of cloud and
flame, but a light to
lessen ages.’ For
his part, Liszt told a
friend that his finale
‘will even aim to
set fire to the entire
audience!’
This critical edition
includes a detailed study
on the genesis of
Liszt’s
Sardanapalo in English,
German, and Hungarian,
the libretto in the
original Italian as well
as in English, German,
and Hungarian
translation, several
facsimile pages of
Liszt’s
manuscript, and a
detailed Critical
Report. $130.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks

5th, 2017, a mass
shooting took place at
the First Baptist Church
in Sutherland Springs,
Texas. Twenty-six
innocent people lost
their lives that day,
including an unborn
child. Overture to a
Small Town is dedicated
to these victims and the
loved ones they left
behind. From the biggest
cities to the smallest
towns, the senseless
bloodshed must end.
Despite the darkness of
this tragedy, it is my
intent through this music
to portray a sense of
hope, dignity, and
innocence deserved by all
America’s cities
and towns.  The
opening moments of this
piece should be treated
delicately, ensuring that
the brass section moves
together in one unified
voice, and that the
crotales evoke distant
flickers of light.
Similarly, in mm.
120-127, articulations in
the flutes, trumpets and
mallets should be strong
enough to be heard, but
without being
aggressive.  The
textural layering in mm.
48-53 should be executed
with machine-like
precision of both rhythm
and articulation. This
passage should evoke the
sound of many voices
rising together. There
should be a great
contrast between the
opening Piano dynamic and
the final Forte
dynamic.  In mm.
65-69, both mallet
percussionists may play
the indicated notes in
any octave they choose.
Both players should move
rapidly between notes in
any order. This passage
should sound fluid and
ethereal.  In mm.
69-73: If there is no
English Horn available to
the ensemble, the Trumpet
should play this passage
solo. If there is an
English Horn, both
instruments should play
the passage together. $13.00 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks
