the human heart. What a
blessing it is,
especially during times
of distress or
uncertainty, to know that
we aren't alone, that
someone is reaching out
to help us and even hold
us. It could be a family
member or a friend. It
could be a still small
voice whispering, It's
okay. I've got you. It
could even be a loving
community, like a choir,
assuring us that we are
known, that we are loved,
that we belong. The first
word - scapulis - is
translated as pinions. On
a bird, a pinion is the
outer part of the wing,
including the flight
feathers. The opening
measures, with a
one-measure phrase
followed be a
three-measure phrase, are
meant to evoke the image
of wings unfurling to
welcome in. All through
this section - mm. 1-20 -
encourage phrasing that
is never hurried but
moves with intention to
the last stressed

commissioned by the
Harvard Glee Club. It was
premiered by the Harvard
Glee Club, Cambridge,

Saints' Choir of Men and

Massachusetts; (Andrew

The Latin title, meaning
Mass in uncertain times,
refers to the centuries
of comfort, inspiration,
and spiritual enrichment
that the mass (and the
musical settings for its
celebration) has provided
to many individuals
through difficulty and
uncertainty. I cannot
deny that the times in
which this piece was
composed are the most
nationally and
internationally uncertain
of my own life to date.
That fact had a definite
impact on the tone and
emotional character of
the piece. However, there
is a universality as
well, since one could
readily feel that all
times have a sense of
uncertainty, especially
since we never know
exactly what the future
holds. The first three
movements have somewhat
enigmatic endings. The
end of the Agnus Dei
tries to temper (but not
erase) that uncertainty
with a degree of optimism
and fervor in a
passionate plea of Dona
nobis pacem.

Fairlie's Storm and
Urge is a significant
work for wind band and
portrays a journey of
emotional turbulence. The
title comes from the
German “Sturm und
Drang,” a literary
and musical movement of
the late 1700s which
focused on extremes of
emotion. Opening with a
simple and reflective
theme, we are then taken
through a range of
emotional settings from
uncertainty to
resistance, and then calm
resolve and
self-knowledge. With a
variety of textures and
vivid imagery, this is a
masterful work for the
contemporary ensemble.

my last weeks of study at
Westminster Choir
College. The Latin text
(Sine paenitentia enim

translates roughly to
“Truly, without
regret are the gifts and
callings of God.â€
This piece serves not
only as an outward
affirmation for all to
embrace and use their
God-given talents, but
also as an inward mantra
for myself, as I move
into an uncertain period
in my life after
completing my
undergraduate studies.
Many of the colors and
textures found within
this piece were
influenced by my
experience singing with
the Westminster
Williamson Voices for two
years. While the
“sine
paenitentia†text
may allow shades of doubt
to creep in, all
uncertainty and fear is
dispelled upon singing
“sunt dona et
vocatio Dei.â€

This piece,
dedicated to the memory
of a heroic feat, does
not desire to be classed
as a Symphonic Poem in
the generally accepted
sense of this term. It
does not attempt to
picture, or to strictly
follow, the various
mechanical and realistic
phases of this heroic
adventure although, on
the other hand, it does
not entirely avoid
allusion to such
realistic phenomena as
are characteristic of and
inseperable from the
nature of this adventure
and the technical means
of its realization. The
composer's main object,
however, was to try to
express in sound the
emotional phases of an
adventure that might be
called a prototype of
modern romance; to touch
upon its human aspect and
its ethical meaning, not
only in the relation to
the individual, but to
humanity in general. To
the individual, the
venturing Hero, refer the
opening phrases; the
sinister aspect of a bold
inspiration at its first
manifestation. To his
human environments, his
character and conquering
spirit, refer certain
lyrical as well as
martial and ehical
themes. According to the
nature of the venture,
the clash of motoric
forces and that of an
indomitable spirit with
the threatening elements
presented themselves for
musical consideration as
well as the plausible
uncertainty of the
outcome, the increasing
conficence and the final
victory, and triumphant
victory itself. And as
emotion in its purest and
most intense form reverts
to the primitive, the
composer thought it not
amiss to make fragmentary
use of the anthems of two
nations, thus symbolizing
the appeal from soil to
soil; an appeal that
found its joyous echo in
all humanity. And in the
midst of the turbulent
rejoicing stands the lone
figure of the Hero whose
daring had materialized
the dream of aeons.

In 2011,
Barbara Garrop, my
mother, commissioned me
to write a piano trio in
memory of Norman Garrop,
my father, who passed
away about thirty years
ago. When I started
brainstorming about
topics for the piece, I
found it difficult to
recall many moments of my
early life involving my
father. Too many years
had passed, and the
memories that I could
summon were of achild
looking up to her father,
not an adult relating to
an equal. However, while
collecting stories of my
father from various
family members, along
with discovering a number
of objects that had once
belonged to him and that
I had stored away in
boxes decades ago, I
began to realize that
this piece wasn't so much
about my father as it was
about my re-discovering
the man that he was: a
loving husband and dad
who cared deeply about
his family and his
passions (which included
bike riding, collecting
coins, strumming our
guitar, playing baseball,
watching football games,
entertaining people,
helping to run local
theater and puppet
productions, and carving
objects out of wook); an
accountant who dreamed of
a better future: a
treasurer of our local
synagogue; an early
advocate for computers
(we owned an Apple II+);
and a pranster with a
great sense of humor.
Ultimately, I decided to
musically tell the story
of my search for these
memories. In the first
movement (Without), a
child calls out in a
sing-song voice,
searching for her lost
parent. This search
intesifies over the
course of the movement
through a series of
themes, including a
stepping motif in which a
two-note progression
steadily climbs higher, a
pseudo-jewish folksong,
and a passionate longing
theme. The child's search
becomes increasingly
intense throughout the
movement, calling out
fervently and repeatedly
to the parent; the
movement ends in a moment
of great tnesion and
uncertainty. The second
movment (Within) quietly
opens with the lost
parent finally answering,
represented by a solo
cello; the child (now
personified by the
violin) has found the
parent within the
sanctuary of her own
heart. This movement
highlights the joy and
solemnity of this
beautiful discovery.

composed Sing with Me
during the summer of 2020
as my own personal
response to the
relentless series of
heartaches that we faced:
the uncertainty of the
COVID-19 pandemic, the
anguish of not being able
to sing together and the
rise of social justice
crises across the
country. It is the first
piece for which I have
also written the text. At
the time, I was unsure of
what the fall semester
would look like for my
own choir. Would we be in
person? If so, for how
long? Therefore, I
designed the piece to be
accessible and adaptable
to whatever situation we
faced. It is my wish that
the message of hope and
unity will resonate with
all who sing or hear

Butterworth (1885-1916),
an English composer whose
life was cut short at the
Battle of the Somme,
wrote two song cycles
based on A SHROPSHIRE
LAD, a collection of 63
poems by A.E. Housman.
Conceived as an epilogue,
the orchestral rhapsody
to A SHROPSHIRE LAD is
widely considered to be
his masterpiece. The
London Symphony Orchestra
gave the first
performance at the Leeds
Festival on October 2,
1913 under the direction
of Arthur Nikisch.
Originally titled THE
LAND OF THE LOST CONTENT,
it looks back at an
idyllic world threatened,
perhaps prophetically, by
the fear of uncertainty
and loss.

Thanks to
its skilful combination
of Romantic melody and
sparkling virtuosity,
KoussevitzkyÂ’s Double
Bass Concerto op. 3 has
been one of the most
popular works of its
genre since its Moscow
premiere in 1905. No
wonder, for the virtuoso
double bass player
Koussevitzky had composed
it for his very own
instrument. As early as
1906/07 a first piano
reduction was published
in Moscow, followed by a
second in 1910 in
Leipzig. However, both
contain so many mistakes
in the solo part that
there is still
uncertainty about the
correct musical text in
many passages to this
day. The double bass
player Tobias Glöckler
has therefore prepared
his Urtext edition using
several sources: as well
as the manuscript
performance material and
the piano reductions
published during the
composer's lifetime, he
has also studied
recordings with
Koussevitzky as soloist -
thereby finally producing
a
thoroughly-researchedUrte
xt edition of the
orchestral score and
piano reduction of this
classic of the double
bass literature. As with
all double bass concertos
published by Henle
Publishers, this edition
also contains the piano
reduction by Christoph
Sobanski in two keys (E
minor and F sharp minor)
for performance with solo

In 2011,
Barbara Garrop, my
mother, commissioned me
to write a piano trio in
memory of Norman Garrop,
my father, who passed
away about thirty years
ago. When I started
brainstorming about
topics for the piece, I
found it difficult to
recall many moments of my
early life involving my
father. Too many years
had passed, and the
memories that I could
summon were of achild
looking up to her father,
not an adult relating to
an equal. However, while
collecting stories of my
father from various
family members, along
with discovering a number
of objects that had once
belonged to him and that
I had stored away in
boxes decades ago, I
began to realize that
this piece wasn't so much
about my father as it was
about my re-discovering
the man that he was: a
loving husband and dad
who cared deeply about
his family and his
passions (which included
bike riding, collecting
coins, strumming our
guitar, playing baseball,
watching football games,
entertaining people,
helping to run local
theater and puppet
productions, and carving
objects out of wook); an
accountant who dreamed of
a better future: a
treasurer of our local
synagogue; an early
advocate for computers
(we owned an Apple II+);
and a pranster with a
great sense of humor.
Ultimately, I decided to
musically tell the story
of my search for these
memories. In the first
movement (Without), a
child calls out in a
sing-song voice,
searching for her lost
parent. This search
intesifies over the
course of the movement
through a series of
themes, including a
stepping motif in which a
two-note progression
steadily climbs higher, a
pseudo-jewish folksong,
and a passionate longing
theme. The child's search
becomes increasingly
intense throughout the
movement, calling out
fervently and repeatedly
to the parent; the
movement ends in a moment
of great tnesion and
uncertainty. The second
movment (Within) quietly
opens with the lost
parent finally answering,
represented by a solo
cello; the child (now
personified by the
violin) has found the
parent within the
sanctuary of her own
heart. This movement
highlights the joy and
solemnity of this
beautiful discovery.
