Xiaogang Ye
(b. 1955) is one of the
most widely known young
composers in China. From
1978-1983 he studied at
the Central Conservatory
of Music of China. As
early as 1982 he won 1st
prize in the Alexander
Tcherepnin Composition
Competition. In 1983,
having completed his
studies, he was appointed
to a teaching post and
'Composer in residence'
at the Central
Conservatory of Music of
China. From 1987 Xiaogang
Ye continued his studies
in the USA at the Eastman
School of Music of the
University of Rochester
where he obtained his
master degree. He has had
many international
commissions and his works
have widely been
performed in Eastern
Asia, New Zealand, USA
and in Europe.

These works show the
Southern-originated
musicians sensitivity and
attention to the natural
environment in a country
of the Far East. Gardenia
indistinctly means
eternal joy in Chinese
context. It isborn in a
moist natural environment
with a kind of faintly
fragrant scent; its white
color is of high
aesthetic value to
Asians. Andit is usually
used as food and medicine
in South Asia. The
gardenia honey is with
mild sweet and faint
sweet. The Gardenia is
also acity flower of
Yueyang City, which is a
quiet and distant small
city located in Hunan
Province, South of China.
When composing this work,
the composer adopted folk
operas and folk songs in
the area of Yueyuang,
showing his yearning and
a sense of loss to the
beautiful scenery in
South China.
