rolling and weaving
melodies of this
undulating piece. In his
writing, Arnold ponders
how the vastness of the
sea and the thrashing
waves that crash on the
sand and rocks seem to
mirror the melancholy in
his heart. He comes back
to the steadfast nature
of the cliffs of England
that allow the light of
the moon to gleam across
and then scatter into
darkness. The echoing
phrases are intended to
create concrete
repetitions that mirror
the original unison
melody with minor
deviations. In turn, the
driving passages will
challenge the performer
while providing
arpeggiated accompaniment
to propel them

work is composed for the
needs of tenor-bass

Japanese origin. When you
look it up in a
dictionary, you will find
that it means ‘a great
sea wave produced by
submarine earth movement
or volcanic eruption’.
A megatsunami is the
superlative of this
awesome expression of
power that nature can
create, and has
catastrophic
consequences.
When Carl Wittrock
completed this
composition not many such
big earth movements had
occurred, but since then
we have become all too
familiar with the
disastrous consequences
which a tsunami may
have. On the 26th of
December 2004 a heavy
seaquake took place near
the Indonesian island of
Sumatra. Tidal waves 10
meters in height ravaged
the coastal regions
ofmany countries for
miles around. The tsunami
took the lives of
thousands of people and
destroyed many villages
and towns.
There
are more areas which run
the risk of being struck
by a tsunami, such as the
island of La Palma, one
of the Canary Islands.
This island is based on
oceanic crust at a
fracture zone and as such
is one of nature’s time
bombs. The consequences
of a natural calamity
like a megatsunami are
immense. In the case
of La Palma, the tidal
wave will move in the
direction of South
America, where it may
reach 50 km inland,
destroying everything on
its way.
In his
composition Wittrock
describes an ordinary day
which will have an
unexpected ending.
Right from the
beginning there seems to
be something in the air,
the music creating an
oppressive atmosphere of
impending disaster.
Themes are interrupted,
broken off suddenly,
followed by silence,
suggesting the calm
before the storm.
Suddenly a short
climax (glissandi in the
trombone part) indicates
the seaquake, and the
megatsunami is a fact.
Hereafter follows a
turbulent passage
symbolising the huge
rolling waves. After
nature’s force has
spent itself, resignation
sets in and the
composition ends with a
majestic ode to nature.

- which literally means
'wave' - is a term used
in Indian music to
describe a repeating
melodic phrase that
accompanies table and
pakhawaj solo. In such a
traditional context the
lahara would be played by
a melodic instrument such
as the sarangi,
functioning as a
background against which
the flourishing
virtuosity of the soloist
could evolve. In my piece
this function is also
present in the form of a
long line stated three
times fully in the Thai
gongs, however there is
no virtuosic soloist.
Instead, the musical
evolution (if it is that)
takes the form of a
resonant ceremony enacted
on bell plates and steel
pans, situated not only
on-stage but in four
locations around the
audience. If you want to
look for it, the idea of
waves can also be seen in
other aspects of the
piece: the slow wave of
the gradual progression
of players from the back
of the hall to the front,
which defines the form of
the piece; the waves of
tam-tam crescendi at the
end of each statement of
the lahara; maybe even in
the way that the
foreground melodic
figurations progressively
increase in density over
the course of the piece
until they completely
dominate our perception,
before suddenly
disappearing… And
on a more concrete note
every sound is, after

superlative of this

When Carl Wittrock
completed this
composition not many such
big earth movements had
occurred, but since then
we have become all too
familiar with the
disastrousconsequences
which a tsunami may
have. On the 26th of
December 2004 a heavy
seaquake took place near
the Indonesian island of
Sumatra. Tidal waves 10
meters in height ravaged
the coastal regions of
many countries for miles
around. The tsunamitook
the lives of thousands of
people and destroyed many
villages and
towns.
There are
more areas which run the
risk of being struck by a
tsunami, such as the
island of La Palma, one
of the Canary Islands.
This island is based on
oceaniccrust at a
fracture zone and as such
is one of nature’s time
bombs. The consequences
of a natural calamity
like a megatsunami are
immense. In the case
of La Palma, the tidal
wave will move in the
direction of South
America, where it may
reach 50km inland,
destroying everything on
its way.
In his
composition Wittrock
describes an ordinary day
which will have an
unexpected ending.
Right from the
beginning there seems to
be something in the air,
the music creating an
oppressiveatmosphere of
impending disaster.
Themes are interrupted,
broken off suddenly,
followed by silence,

The title
hidden tracks is
ambiguous. First of all,
the piece is almost
throughout imagined as
'multi-track', with
layers (in the sense of
sound tracks) that partly
overlay each other,
partly suddenly appear
from the background. The
composition deals with
'hidden' lines, sounds at
the perception threshold,
with side effects of the
accordion sound which
-observed, so to speak,
under a compositional
'microscope' - develop a
special allure: that is
the vertical component.
The title has also a
horizontal meaning: a
'hidden track' is a piece
on a record without a
track number that is not
mentioned on the cover
either. In most cases, a
'hidden track' follows
after a longer break
after the (presumably)
last piece on the record;
often this track contains
strange sounds, noise or
other surprising
elements. 'Hidden tracks'
are surrounded by a
nimbus of the mysterious
and subversive. This
effect is being used
rather often throughout
the piece: again and
again, it seems to have
ended but continues after
a pause. The expectation
of the listener and the
attentiveness also for
the tiniest events rises;
the performance receives
an almost scenic
character. hidden tracks
was partly composed in
August 2008 during a stay
at the Kunstlerhaus Lukas
in Ahrenshoop at the
shores of the Baltic Sea.
The work was accompanied
by many walks on the
beach - again and again,
I caught a sight on
tracks in the sand that
became overlaid by other
tracks, wiped out by the
wind and the waves...
