Michael
Larkin's gentle anthem of
comfort is based on
Isaiah 43:1 - 4. The
luscious choral textures
are supported by a
decorative piano
accompaniment, making
this an accessible piece
for choirs of all
abilities. The text
appears in Lutheran
Service Book's
Three-Year Lectionary,
Series C, as the Old
Testament Reading for the
Baptism of Our Lord. The
piece also makes a
wonderful anthem for
baptisms and
confirmations.
Do not be afraid,
for I have redeemed
you. I have
called you by your name,
and you are
Mine. Do not
be afraid, for you are
Mine.
When you pass
through deep waters the
waves will not cover
you. When
you pass through the fire
the flames will not touch
you. The
flames will not touch
you. Do not
be afraid, for I have
redeemed
you. I have
called you by your name,
and you are
Mine. For I
am the Lord your God; you
are precious in My
sight.
I
love you with a perfect
love. I love
you with a perfect love,
a perfect
love.

Propulsion
is the action of driving

is the force that thrusts

One of my
favourite pieces of music
as a child - and I still
love it - was Schubert's
Trout Quintet. It was
partly the wonderful
music, of course, so
light-hearted and joyful
on the surface, yet with
twists and turns and
murky depths of feeling
too. But I also liked the
picture of a trout on the
album sleeve - such
beautiful creatures! Last
year, while resident at
the Villa Concordia in
Bamberg, as I took daily
walks along the Regnitz
river, I observed the
trout as they calmly
hovered and swayed in the
shallows... But if they
felt my shadow they were
gone in a split second!
If you ever get a chance
to look closely at brown
trout you see that they
are covered in myriad
brown/red spots of varied
sizes; camouflage I
suppose. Now those
patterns seem to be
mixing in my mind with
the shifting colours of
the spectral arpeggios
that flow through this
little piece. It's a
watery piece, with
rippling waves,
shimmering surfaces and
textural veils around the
melodies which flow
through it. But it also
takes inspiration (and
it's title) from a Pablo
Neruda poem: the third
stanza of Every Day You
Play includes the line
The sky is a net crammed
with shadowy fish.
There's no singer, but I
imagine an invisible or
imaginary voice somewhere
behind (or beyond) the
music, and so the score
includes a melodic
setting of the text. Even
though this is not
performed by a voice, the
melody is always played
by the ensemble -
especially high register
cello - making the piece
something like the
inverse of a song without
words. (Christian
Mason)

Whereas
Nono considered the world
to be only fragmentarily
analyzable, so-called
consumer capitalism
increasingly intrudes
upon ego structures, by
fragmenting them to the
point of: assumed
insufficiency, i.e., was
consumption a form of
infiltration?, or: in
television you can see
models licking face cream
because it's so rich etc.
(retranslated), as
Meredith Haaf cited in
her book review (SZ /

Kleeman: You Too Can Have
A Body Like Mine) , and
to the point of similar
perfection-senselessness.
Music doesn't do things
by halves. Even when
events or notes are
puffed up, they can
retain elegance and
significance. Other ego
amplitudes are of
violinistic nature or are
favourite memories -
Paganini's Capricci,
Stockhausen's Studie I,
Steve Reich, the tone C
and similar things. The
craziest egos are
quantums, because at no
time are they identical
with themselves. They can
entangle and superpose,
are nonlocal, etc.
Although the sound
character in this Duo is
fairly open, I believe I
succeeded in making
probability waves of
harmonic stopovers
perceptible. This means
hearing without analyzing
and without constantly
measuring. Nonlocality -
without messenger
particles - means no
harmonic steps, but with
the capacity to interact.

TERRAINS VAGUES by Klaus

this title for my
orchestral work, because
of its closeness in
associations: an
indeterminable, often
polarized, state of
rhythmic and tonal
ambiguity.The expression
seems created by the

fascination: in the kinds

are simultaniously
bizarre and ugly, as if
created by two alien

Text: Victor
Hugo.
In his poem
Soiree en mer, Victor
Hugo describes how the
sea can be perceived very
differently by two lovers
at the same time in the
same place. While the man
perceives the deepening
shadows on the dancing
waves, the woman marvels
at the stars shining ever
brighter in the
firmament. In nature, as
in the words of the poem,
the painful ambiguity
that represents life at
its core can be
experienced. Like no
other poet, Hugo captures
this almost unbearable
simultaneity of living
and dying, of love and
suffering. Saint-Saens
translates this into
music - probably the most
ephemeral and
contemporary of all art
forms. His balanced
musical form leaves
plenty of room for the
poetry and his subtle
variations in timbre,
which also inspired Denis
Rouger to his choral
arrangement, create a
seething motion under the
surface of the
sea.
This art song
was originally composed
not for chamber choir,
but for solo voice and
piano. Denis Rouger has
carefully adapted it to
suit the requirements and
expressive possibilities
offered by a larger
ensemble, without losing
any of the qualities of
the original in the
process. Each part in the
choir has a melodic line
drawn from the harmonic
and rhythmic framework.
In the process, the
variety and refinement of
the choral language
combines with an enormous
flexibility in form and
expression, as French
melodies or German art
song demand from a
soloist and pianist. The
songs have been recorded
by the figure humaine
chamber choir on the CD
...wo die Ztronen bluhn
(Carus 83.514).
