Centenary 2019 is a three-movement suite based on a local folksong and was commissioned by Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem, from the Dutch province of Friesland, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2019. ‘Awakening Village’, the first movement, musically describes the waking up and coming to life of the village. ‘Bintje Monument’ was inspired by a famous sculpture that was placed to honour headmaster Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929) who developed the well-known potato variety called ‘bintje’. The finale, ‘Journey into the Unknown’ refers to the band’s memorable 2011 concert trip to the United States of America, in which the composer combines elements of thefolksong and fragments from ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’. The piece consists of a wide range of playful and melodic sequences as well as some galvanizing rhythmical passages.

Het driedelige werk Centenary 2019 werd gecomponeerd in opdracht van Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem uit het Friese Sumar ter gelegenheid van het honderdjarig jubileum van de vereniging in 2019. Het is gebaseerd op een plaatselijk volksliedje. In het eerste deel, ‘Awakening Village’, wordt verklankt hoe het dorp ontwaakt en tot leven komt. Deel twee, ‘Bintje Monument’, is ge nspireerd op een sculptuur ter nagedachtenis van hoofdonderwijzer Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929), die het bekende aardappelras bintje ontwikkelde. De finale, ‘Journey into the Unknown’ verwijst naar een concertreis die de muziekvereniging in 2011 naar de VS maakte. De componist laat elementen uit hetleidmotief en flarden van ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ in het slotdeel van dit werk samenkomen. Het werk als geheel bestaat uit diverse speelse en melodische sequensen, alsook opzwepende ritmische passages.

Cette suite en trois mouvements est fondée sur une chanson traditionnelle locale. Le premier mouvement, « Awakening Village » (Le village s’éveille), dépeint l’éveil et la reprise des activités du village. « Bintje Monument » (Le monument la Bintje) s’inspire de la célèbre sculpture qui rend hommage Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929), un directeur d’école qui a créé une variété de pomme de terre bien connue, la Bintje. Le dernier mouvement, « Journey into the Unknown » (Voyage vers l’inconnu),évoque une inoubliable série de concerts aux États-Unis. I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of the composer’s youngest son’s wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)—although no literal quotations have been used. The rather rare combination of soprano and fanfare band makes this piece a unique addition to the repertoire!

I Shall Love But Thee is in de letterlijke zin van het woord een gelegenheidswerk, want het werd oorspronkelijk geschreven naar aanleiding van het huwelijk van de jongste zoon van de componist. De teksten zijn van William Shakespeare: Jan Van der Roost werd erdoor ge nspireerd tot het creëren van indringende en aansprekende muziek, die in stilistisch opzicht doet denken aan Henry Purcell (in het eerste deel) en Georg Friedrich Händel (in het tweede deel), twee componisten die op teksten van Shakespeare hebben gecomponeerd ook al zijn er geen letterlijke citaten gebruikt. De vrij zeldzame combinatie van sopraan en fanfare maakt dit werk een unieke aanwinst voor hetrepertoire!

This piece, though based on rather simple rhythmic and melodic fragments, is a majestic fanfare designed to herald the year 2000. It features contrasting flourishes by woodwinds, brass and percussion.

Deze majestueuze, krachtige fanfare werd geschreven ter aankondiging van de 21e eeuw. Nadat het lage koper en de houtblazers het thema hebben ingezet, voegen alle instrumenten zich hier gaandeweg bij. Een ideale opening voor een concertwaaraan zowel de muzikanten als de toehoorders plezier zullen beleven.

Diese majestätische, kraftvolle Fanfare wurde zur Begrüßung des 21. Jahrhunderts komponiert. Beginnend mit dem tiefen Blech und den Holzbläsern stimmen nach und nach alle Instrumente in das Thema ein. Eine ideale Konzerteröffnung, die allen Musikern und dem Publikum viel Freude bereiten wird!

The 31 kilometer (19 miles) long beautiful Thien Duong Cave or Paradise Cave lies in one of Vietnam’s national parks and was not discovered until 2005. Composer Jan de Haan visited this unearthly looking place. The grandnessand astounding splendour of this natural wonder made such an impression that it inspired him to write this composition. He experienced Paradise Cave as art, albeit formed by nature across millions of years. Back home, he renderedthe imposing experience in music. This resulted in a colourful and spectacular concert work for fanfare band. Paradise Cave is dedicated to the World Music Contest (WMC).

De 31 kilometer lange, prachtige Thien Duong-grot (oftewel Paradise Cave) , gelegen in een van de nationale parken van Vietnam, werd pas in 2005 ontdekt. Toen componist Jan de Haan deze buitenaards aandoende plek bezocht, maaktende grootsheid en adembenemende pracht van dit natuurwonder zo veel indruk op hem dat hij zich ge nspireerd voelde om dit werk te schrijven. Hij beleefde Paradise Cave als kunst, maar dan in miljoenen jaren gecreëerd door denatuur. Thuis zette hij zijn indrukwekkende ervaring om in muziek, wat resulteerde in een kleurrijk en spectaculair concertwerk voor fanfareorkest. Paradise Cave is opgedragen aan het Wereld Muziek Concours (WMC).

Die 31 Kilometer lange wunderschöne Thien-Duong-Höhle oder Paradies-Höhle liegt in einem der Nationalparks Vietnams und wurde erst 2005 entdeckt. Der Komponist Jan de Haan besuchte diesen fast überirdischen Ort. DieGroßartigkeit und außerordentliche Pracht dieses Naturwunders beeindruckten ihn derart, dass ihn dies zu dieser Komposition inspirierte. Er erlebte die Paradies-Höhle als ein Kunstwerk, obwohl sie im Laufe von Millionen von Jahrenvon der Natur geformt wurde. Als er wieder zu Hause war, setzte er dieses beeindruckende Erlebnis in Musik um. Das Ergebnis ist ein lebendiges und atemberaubendes Werk für Fanfare-Orchester. Paradise Cave ist dem WorldMusic Contest (WMC) gewidmet.

Longue de 31 km et seulement découverte en 2005, la splendide grotte de Thien Duong ou grotte de Paradis se trouve dans l’un des parcs nationaux du Vietnam. Au cours d’un voyage, le compositeur Jan de Haan visita ce lieud’aspect surnaturel. Le caractère grandiose et l’extraordinaire splendeur de cette merveille naturelle l’impressionnèrent tellement qu’il s’en inspira pour composer cette œuvre.. Pour le compositeur, la grotte de Paradis est unmonument artistique, bien que formé par la nature au fil de millions d’années. Rentré chez lui, il mit en musique cette expérience exceptionnelle, produisant ainsi une pièce de concert spectaculaire et haute en couleurs pourfanfare. Paradise Cave est dédiée au World Music Contest (WMC).

A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands, one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony, a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition, much like a musical flashback. The right idea at the right moment, as this piece will prove!

Deze compositie is geschreven ter gelegenheid van Een flashback is een psychologisch fenomeen: een hedendaagse belevenis roept zomaar uit het niets herinneringen uit het verleden op. Zo verging het ook Jan de Haan, toen hij een muziekstukvoor het Nationaal Jeugd Fanfare Orkest in opdracht kreeg. Het is het orkest waarin hij zelf ooit speelde. Plotseling viel hem het werk Deep Harmony in, een werk dat hij destijds vaak had gespeeld. Zijn flashback opdit Engelse kerklied nam hij als inspiratiebron en hij verwerkte het in dit nieuwe muziekstuk. De juiste inval op het juiste moment, zoals nu iedereen kan horen!

So ging es auch Jan de Haan, als er ein Stück für ein Jugendauswahlorchester der Niederlande, in dem er selbst einst mitspielte, schreiben sollte. Plötzlich fiel ihm ein damals oft programmiertes Stück namens Deep Harmony ein und er nahm diesen Flashback als Inspiration, dieses englische Kirchenlied in seinem neuen Werk zu verarbeiten. Der richtige Einfall im richtigen Moment, wie das Resultat beweist!

Des événements du passé, imprimés dans la mémoire long terme, resurgissent comme une réponse inconsciente et soudaine un stimulus lié une expérience antérieure.Cette œuvre a été composée l’occasion du cinquantième anniversaire de l’Orchestre de Fanfare National des Jeunes des Pays-Bas, une formation talentueuse, dont Jan de Haan fut lui-même membre, au cours des années 1960. Jeune musicien, il éprouvait un profond respect pour le chef d’alors, Piebe Bakker (1929-2002), un homme passionné, avec un style de direction très stimulant. En revenant sur cette période, quarante ans après, Jan de Haan a revécu lesnombreuses interprétations de la pièce Deep Harmony. La mélodie scintillante - extraite d’un cantique anglais - lui est alors apparue comme un flash-back et c’est comme un éclair mental qu’il a choisi de lui redonner vie dans le passage final de cette œuvre.

This work was composed for a series of concerts that were characterised by a variety of musical directions. These musical directions are captured in Campus Intrada, which was named after the Cultuurcampus in which the concerts took place. A typical fanfare-like section, a jazzy section and a section reminiscent of pop music are contained in this three-minute work.

Dit werk is speciaal gecomponeerd voor de concertserie van Adezi, een samenwerkingsverband van Harmonie Orkest Vleuten, De Bazuin (De Meern), het Utrechts Centrum voor de Kunsten (UCK), ZIMIHC, de Stichting Podiumwerkplaats en de Concertzender. Deze partijen hebben de handen ineengeslagen om de blaasmuziek in de regio Utrecht een stimulans te geven die wordt gekenmerkt door een diversiteit van muzikale richtingen. Deze richtingen zijn verklankt in Campus Intrada, genoemd naar de Cultuurcampus, waar de concerten plaatsvinden. Zo zijn een typisch fanfareachtig gedeelte, een jazzy gedeelte en een popgedeelte kernachtig samengevoegd in dit korte werk van 3 minuten.

Dieses Werk wurde speziell für eine Konzertreihe komponiert, die sich durch eine Vielfalt an musikalischen Richtungen auszeichnete. Diese musikalischen Richtungen sind in Campus Intrada vertont, das nach dem Cultuurcampus“, in dem die Konzerte stattfanden, benannt wurde. So wurden ein typisch fanfareartiger Teil, ein jazziger und ein an Popmusik erinnernder Teil kurz und prägnant in diesem dreiminütigen Werk zusammengefasst.

Cette pièce fut composée pour une série de concerts caractérisée par une multitude de styles de musique différents. Ces styles sont saisis dans Campus Intrada dont le titre est nommé selon le Cultuurcampus où les concerts ont eu lieu. Plusieurs sections différentes font partie de cette œuvre d’une longueur de trois minutes : l’une dans la forme d’une fanfare, une autre dans un style de jazz et une dernière évoquant la musique pop.

Hora Est! (Latin for ‘it is time!’) was composed to bid adieu to Sjoerd de Boer’s following forty years as conductor of the Chr. Fanfare Band, based in the town of Wjelsryp in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, this small phrase, hora est, is traditionally said upon awarding a university doctorate at graduation ceremonies. The composition was written with Sjoerd de Boer firmly in mind, mirroring various aspects of his life. The main motif of the work consists of three notes, forming his initials: S (Eb) D B. At a certain point, the music is interrupted by a thunderstorm and heavy rain (forever a bad omen: the debut for this work took place a day after such a deluge, but fortunately their open-air concert was met with clear blue skies.) The fanfare then plays an Italianesque march, with the motif of de Boer’s initials interwoven throughout. The work re-uses this motif twice towards the end of the piece as one might expect, by the saxophones to create a festive, driven and virtuosic atmosphere. Finally, the work comes to an end with the initials motif played across the ensemble in complete unison. The powerful closing chords symbolise a fond farewell to de Boer: a driven and extremely capable conductor whose musical mark on Concordia will be felt for years to come. Hora Est! is suitable as a contest piece and would be a definite highlight for any upcoming concert.

Hora Est! is Latijn voor ‘Het is tijd!’. Het zinnetje wordt traditioneel uitgesproken bij een promotie tot doctor op de universiteit, op het moment dat de vastgestelde tijd voor verdediging van het proefschrift om is. De pedel komt dan binnen en stampt met zijn staf op de grond terwijl hij deze woorden roept. In dat opzicht verwijst de titel naar de voormalige universiteitsstad Franeker, de woonplaats van Sjoerd en de stad waar hij jaren lang leraar muziek was aan de christelijke scholengemeenschap. Anderzijds verwijst de titel naar zijn afscheid van Concordia: ‘Het is tijd!’.

The 31 kilometer (19 miles) long beautiful Thien Duong Cave or Paradise Cave lies in one of Vietnam’s national parks and was not discovered until 2005. Composer Jan de Haan visited this unearthly looking place. The grandnessand astounding splendour of this natural wonder made such an impression that it inspired him to write this composition. He experienced Paradise Cave as art, albeit formed by nature across millions of years. Back home, he renderedthe imposing experience in music. This resulted in a colourful and spectacular concert work for fanfare band. Paradise Cave is dedicated to the World Music Contest (WMC).

De 31 kilometer lange, prachtige Thien Duong-grot (oftewel Paradise Cave) , gelegen in een van de nationale parken van Vietnam, werd pas in 2005 ontdekt. Toen componist Jan de Haan deze buitenaards aandoende plek bezocht, maaktende grootsheid en adembenemende pracht van dit natuurwonder zo veel indruk op hem dat hij zich ge nspireerd voelde om dit werk te schrijven. Hij beleefde Paradise Cave als kunst, maar dan in miljoenen jaren gecreëerd door denatuur. Thuis zette hij zijn indrukwekkende ervaring om in muziek, wat resulteerde in een kleurrijk en spectaculair concertwerk voor fanfareorkest. Paradise Cave is opgedragen aan het Wereld Muziek Concours (WMC).

Der Komponist Jan de Haan besuchte diesen fast überirdischen Ort. DieGroßartigkeit und außerordentliche Pracht dieses Naturwunders beeindruckten ihn derart, dass ihn dies zu dieser Komposition inspirierte. Er erlebte die Paradies-Höhle als ein Kunstwerk, obwohl sie im Laufe von Millionen von Jahrenvon der Natur geformt wurde. Als er wieder zu Hause war, setzte er dieses beeindruckende Erlebnis in Musik um. Das Ergebnis ist ein lebendiges und atemberaubendes Werk für Fanfare-Orchester. Paradise Cave ist dem WorldMusic Contest (WMC) gewidmet.

Longue de 31 km et seulement découverte en 2005, la splendide grotte de Thien Duong ou grotte de Paradis se trouve dans l’un des parcs nationaux du Vietnam. Au cours d’un voyage, le compositeur Jan de Haan visita ce lieud’aspect surnaturel. Le caractère grandiose et l’extraordinaire splendeur de cette merveille naturelle l’impressionnèrent tellement qu’il s’en inspira pour composer cette œuvre.. Pour le compositeur, la grotte de Paradis est unmonument artistique, bien que formé par la nature au fil de millions d’années. Rentré chez lui, il mit en musique cette expérience exceptionnelle, produisant ainsi une pièce de concert spectaculaire et haute en couleurs pourfanfare. Paradise Cave est dédiée au World Music Contest (WMC).

This piece, though based on rather simple rhythmic and melodic fragments, is a majestic fanfare designed to herald the year 2000. It features contrasting flourishes by woodwinds, brass and percussion.
