Llio was
composed during Berlioz's
stay in Italy in 1831. In
April of that year he set
out from Rome, where he
held a scholarship as
winner of the Prix de
Rome, and travelled as
far as Nice on hearing
that his fiancee Camille
Moke had rejected him in
favour of another suitor.
He had intended to return
to Paris to exact
revenge, but then he
abandoned his plan and
instead spent three weeks
in Nice, returning in
stages to Rome. On this
return journey he
conceived the idea of a
semi-theatrical work that
combined music and
monologues to express the
idea of returning to life
after a profound
traumatic experience.
The composition
was finished in Rome in
Iune 1831. In the spring
of 1832, while staying
with his parents in
Dauphin, Berlioz copied
the orchestral and vocal
parts, and the work was
first performed in
conjunction with the
Symphonie fantastique at
the Paris Conservatoire
on 9 December 1832. It
was heard again three
weeks later and again on
3 May 1835.
While
designated as the second
part of the Episode in
the Life of an Artist,
Lelio can never- theless
be performed on its own,
without the Symphonie
fantastique to precede
it.

Alas! Babylon’s
Final Sunset is
another installment in my
series of works that
musically comment on the
biblical books of Daniel
and Revelation. The
principal source of
inspiration for this
works comes from the 18th
chapter of the book of
Revelation. This chapter
states that the career of
Babylon the Great is
finally coming to an end.
The music begins with a
mysterious pianissimo
tremolo accompanied by
tam-tam and bass drum.
The initial flourishes in
the oboes and English
horn serve as the
principal motive of
warning. As the music
continues, there are
varying degrees of
agitation among the
strings and woodwinds.
Throughout the work there
are rhythmic motives in
the brass, percussion,
and various woodwind
instruments that sing and
speak Babylon is Fallen
in triple meter. As the
tutti ensemble arrives at
a climax, the orchestral
texture becomes thinner
and slightly transparent.
As the music continues,
the opening motive
returns in the oboes,
however the counterpoint
produces a series of solo
laments. These passages
are intended to provide
picturesque images of
these words: And the
voice of harpers, and
musicians, and of pipers,
and trumpeters, shall be
heard no more at all in
thee; and no craftsman,
of whatsoever craft he
be, shall be found any
more in thee; and the
sound of a millstone
shall be heard no more at
all in thee; And the
light of a candle shall
shine no more at all in
thee. and the voice of
the bridegroom and of the
bride shall be heard no
more at all in thee: for
thy merchants were the
great men of the earth;
for by thy sorceries were
all nations deceived. And
in her was found the
blood of prophets, and of
saints, and of all that
were slain upon the
earth. Rev. 18:22-24 The
following passages
musically comment on the
historical career of
Babylon with a sense of
her impending
destruction. The series
of laments transforms
into the more emphatic
rhythmic motive Babylon
is Fallen. The orchestral
texture begins to become
more condense, once
again, with the initial
flourishes of, but with
notable variations.
Finally, the celesta,
harp, oboes, English
horn, and strings sing
profundities that are
finally transformed into
a minor mode tonality
that fades away with the
ringing of the tam-tam.
Babylon has finally seen
her last sunset.

This unusual
concert work,
commissioned by the
concert band ?Harmonie
Concorde? from Sanem in
Luxembourg, is built on
two basic ideas: the
evolution of the economic
and social context of
this Luxembourg city with
its strong mining
industry and the European
concept, which is clearly
present in this very
small but prosperous
country with its many
European institutes. This
is musically expressed in
a few quotes from the
European hymn Ode to Joy,
the closing of
Beethoven?s Ninth
Symphony and from the Te
Deum by Charpentier ?
widely known as the
signature tune for
Eurovision broadcasts. A
work of true
unity.
Aan dit
concertwerk - geschreven
voor de Harmonie Concorde
uit Sanem in Luxemburg -
liggen twee
basisideeën ten
grondslag. Als eerste de
sociaal-economische
context van het stadje:
de mijnbouw heeft
decennialang mensen uit
diverselanden
aangetrokken, met name

Symphony, was
commissioned by
“sinfonischen
blasorchester
wehdel†conducted
by Thomas Ratzek. In the
five movements (white,
yellow, blue, red and
green) the
composer creates links
betweenthe
instrumentation and
harmonic elements and the
actual colour of the
spectrum the movement
stands for. In order to
create the greatest
richness possible, Philip
Sparke used a very large
instrumentation including
low woodwinds, harp,
piano andcelli. A
Colour Symphony is an
impressive and iconic
addition to the standard
repertoire for large
symphonic
bands.

own-choice piece for the
2013 European Brass Band
Championships, held in
Oslo, Norway. Winning the
set piece section of the
contest and coming second
to Eikanger-Bjorsvik
Musikklag with their own
choice selection, Cory
went on to become
European Champions for
the fifth time.Cory MD
Philip Harper had asked
for a 'Concerto for Band'
to fully exploit his
outstanding band of
virtuosi, and composer
Philip Sparke created a
one-movement work with
contiguous sections,
first featuring horns and
flugel, then trombones
followed by cornets and a
slower central section
for percussion and
baritones, euphonium
andbasses.The piece is
abstract in nature,
without a specific
programme, and the title
merely reflects the fact
that the piece was begun
on January 2nd 2013, the
day of Earth's perihelion
- the point in its orbit
when it is closest to the
sun. It could also be
argued that the piece
weaves between moments of
brilliant optimism and
dark shadow, both of
which can be the result
of bright sunshine.
Perihelion

This unusual
concert work,
commissioned by the
concert band ?Harmonie
Concorde? from Sanem in
Luxembourg, is built on
two basic ideas: the
evolution of the economic
and social context of
this Luxembourg city with
its strong mining
industry and the European
concept, which is clearly
present in this very
small but prosperous
country with its many
European institutes. This
is musically expressed in
a few quotes from the
European hymn Ode to Joy,
the closing of
Beethoven?s Ninth
Symphony and from the Te
Deum by Charpentier ?
widely known as the
signature tune for
Eurovision broadcasts. A
work of true
unity.

The
composer tells about the
three-movement work: The
concerto is in three
movements. After the
orchestral introduction,
the harp leads into a
gradually thickening
texture that progresses
into a series of powerful
culminations. Once these
subside, the expansive
motifs of the
introduction return. The
solo is echoed by two
harps in the orchestra: I
wanted the magnificent
sound to be multiplied.
The simple melody in the
second movement is
coloured in a very
archaic way by the
orchestra; we might
imagine the performance
of a troubadour or a bard
in ancient times. The
finale is festive,
'solenne'. It presents
the combined sonority of
the three harps at its
most colourful and
melodic.

Eino
juhani Rautavaara (9.
October 1928 � 27.
July 2016) is
internationally one of
the best known and most
frequently performed
Finnish composers. He was
by nature a romantic,
even a mystic, as is
often apparent from the
titles of his works: for
example Angels and
Visitations for orchestra
or his double-bass
concerto Angel of Dusk.
Despite Rautavaara�s
label of mysticism he was
a complex and
contradictory figure
whose works cannot be
categorized in stylistic
terms.

This work,
written by Maxwell Davies
in 1983 for chamber
orchestra, was
commissioned to celebrate
the quartercentenary of
Edinburgh University. The
first performance was
given by the Scottish
Chamber Orchestra
conducted by Edward
Harper in October 1983.

work was thought through
in outline following a
visit to the ruined
pre-Reformation church of
Hoy in Orkney, on a fine
Spring afternoon after
Maxwell Davies had played
the harmonium for the
tiny congregation in its
large bleak Victorian
replacement. The old
church was surrounded by
the graves of centuries,
the more recent ones with
familiar names, largely
of people who lived in
houses now ruinous -
crofters, fishermen,
clerics, sea-captains.
Next to it stood the
chief farmhouse, the Bu,
going back to Viking
times. He thought of the
lives and deaths
encompassed there,
expressed through
hundreds of years of
music in the church, and
in the big barn of the
farm. The plainsongs
'Dies Irae' and 'Victimae
Paschali Laudes' are used
throughout the work - the
first concerning the Day
of Judgement, from the
Mass for the Dead, the
second particular to
Easter Sunday and the
Resurrection. These are
subject to constant
transformation - the
intervallic contour
slowly changes from one
into the other, and their
notes are made to dance
through Renaissance
astrological 'magic
square' patterns. The
orchestra consists of
double woodwind, two
horns, two trumpets and
strings.
