Paul and Barry Ryan were identical twin sons of 1950’s pop singer Marion Ryan and were born on 24th October 1948. They were groomed for stardom and had started singing as a duo before their fifteenth birthday. They were signed by Decca in 1965 and brilliantly marketed as clean-cut fashion icons. Their first single ‘Don’t Bring Me Your Heartaches’ reached the UK top twenty but their success as twin performers lasted only three years. In 1968 Barry embarked on a solo career while Paul concentrated on writing and producing. Eloise with its melodramatic vocal style and heavily orchestrated backing was an early success of this new collaboration and went on to be covered by a variety ofartists, including punk legends The Damned.

De eeneiige tweelingbroers Paul en Barry Ryan vormden al een zangduo voor hun vijftiende verjaardag. In 1965 tekenden ze een contract bij Decca en werden ze op een briljante manier voor het voetlicht gebracht als keurige mode-idolen,maar hun succes als tweelingartiesten duurde slechts drie jaar. Der Hit Eloise mit seinem melodramatischen Gesangsstil und dem stark orchestrierten Hintergrund ist ein Resultat dieser erfolgreichen Zusammenarbeit und wurde in der Folge von zahlreichen Künstlern neu interpretiert. Philip Sparke machte den Pop-Evergreen nun auch für Blasorchester spielbar.

Variations on a Scale was commissioned by CMV Excelsior Schraard in the Netherlands, to celebrate their 90th anniversary. The piece is in the form of six variations of different lengths but without a unifying theme. Instead, each variation includes either a melody based on the notes of a scale, or figurations based upon scales in the accompaniment.

Variations on a Scale is geschreven in opdracht van CMV Excelsior Schraard (dirigent Thom Zigterman) ter gelegenheid van het 90-jarig jubileum van het orkest in 2012. Het werk werd gepresenteerd tijdens het jubileumconcert en de première vond plaats in maart 2013.De compositie bestaat uit zes variaties van verschillende lengte, zonder een verbindend inhoudelijk thema. In plaats daarvan wordt elke variatie gekarakteriseerd door óf een melodie die is gebaseerd op de noten van een toonladder, óf een opvallende toonladderfiguur in de begeleiding.

Va riations on a Scale wurde 2012 anlässlich des 90-jährigen Bestehens des CMV Excelsior Schraard (Dirigent: Thom Zigterman) in Auftrag gegeben und vom Orchester selbst bei der Jubiläumsfeier im März 2013 uraufgeführt. Das Werk besteht aus sechs verschieden langen Variationen, die nicht thematisch verbunden sind. Den gemeinsamen Nenner bildet das Motto Tonleiter - alle Variationen enthalten entweder eine Melodie, die auf einer Tonleiter beruht oder eine wichtige Tonleiter-Figur in der Begleitung.

The Golden Age is a programmatic composition in four movements. I Overture For the Netherlands, the seventeenth century was a period of great flourishing in the fields of economy, culture and politics; thus it is called the Golden Age. Overseas trade boomed, and the Dutch East India Company (known as the VOC by the Dutch) was founded and expanded to become a powerful -and, at the time - modern enterprise. II ¡Adiós españoles!(Farewell, Spaniards!) In 1567, the Spanish army invaded, led by the Duke of Alva. There was a fierce resistance against the Spanish tyranny; toward the end of the sixteenth century, the Dutch proclaimed theRepublic. However, the Spanish continued the war. Only with the Treaty of Münster in 1648 did the Dutch get their much sought-after independence. This was also the end of the Eighty Years’ War. III Rembrandt’s Night WatchThe field of culture, particularly literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, the art of printing, and cartography developed fast. It was in the Golden Age that the celebrated painter Rembrandt van Rijn created his famous Night Watch. IV The Admiral Overseas trade entailed the colonization of large areas in Asia, from where precious products that yielded lots of money were brought in. Surrounding countries were also involved in such practices. Colonizers poached on each other’s territories in the literal and figurative sense - in this context the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars are legendary. The fourth movement starts with the English patriotic song Rule Britannia, after which the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter makes the English change their tune; one can even hear the roaring of cannons. When the smoke of battle has cleared, a small fragment of a Dutch song about Michiel de Ruyter appears, followed by a fitting closing.

Dan volgt ¡Adiós españoles! over het einde van de Tachtigjarige Oorlog.Rembrandt’s Night Watch beschrijft de ontwikkeling op cultureel gebied: in de Gouden Eeuw schilderde Rembrandt van Rijn zijn beroemde Nachtwacht. Deel vier, The Admiral, begint met Rule Britannia,waarna de Nederlandse admiraal Michiel de Ruyter de Engelsen een toontje lager laat zingen, er is zelfs kanongebulder te horen. Dan klinkt een fragment van het Nederlandse liedje dat aan Michiel de Ruyter is gewijd, waarna een passendslot volgt.

The Golden Age ist eine programmatische Komposition in vier Sätzen über das so genannte “Goldene Zeitalter“ in der Geschichte der Niederlande. In dieser Periode erlebte das Land eine Blütezeit des (Übersee-)Handels, der Kultur und Politik, es befreite sich von der spanischen Herrschaft, brachte Kunstwerke wie Rembrandt’s Nachtwache hervor und entwickelte sich zu einer Kolonialmacht. Die Aufmerksamkeit der Zuhörer ist bei Kees Schoonenbeeks spannender musikalischer Geschichtsstunde garantiert!

Jan Van der Roost was commissioned to write this hymn by the “International Association for Human Rights” in Frankfurt. The commission specified that the instrumentation of this simple hymn should be so, that it can be performed by a variety of combinations of players. The piece starts with an “intrada” for brass ensemble based on the first bars of the hymn, but is “ad libitum” and can therefore be omitted. The coda can also be left out, depending on the available instrumentation. The piece should be played “legato” to accentuate its hymn-like character.

Composer Jacob de Haan has based The Heart of Lithuania on five folk melodies from Lithuania, a country that despite its small size has a rich cultural heritage. The choice and diversity of emotions, largely determined by the characteristic melodies, take the listener straight to the heart of the Lithuanian people.

Litouwen, de grootste van de drie Baltische staten, is gezegend met een rijk cultureel erfgoed. Componist Jacob de Haan heeft The Heart of Lithuania gebaseerd op vijf volksmelodieën die met name geliefd waren in de tweede helftvan de twintigste eeuw. Hoewel alle vijf de liederen afkomstig zijn uit de Auk¹taitija-regio, zijn ze populair in heel Litouwen, ze worden nog altijd gezongen door jonge mensen in de steden en dorpen. Dit schitterende werk voertde luisteraar rechtstreeks naar de ziel van het Litouwse volk.

In The Heart of Lithuania verwendete Jacob de Haan Volkslieder aus Litauen, das trotz seiner relativ geringen Größe doch über ein vielfältiges kulturelles Erbe verfügt. La Lituanie est dotée d’un riche patrimoine culturel. Petit territoire situé sur la rive orientale de la mer Baltique, la Lituanie est divisée en cinq régions ethnographiques : la Samogitie, la Haute Lituanie, la Sudovie, la Dzūkija et la Petite Lituanie. Chaque région a son dialecte, son costume traditionnel, ses coutumes, son artisanat, ses fêtes et jours fériés et surtout ses propres chants traditionnels chantés depuis près d’un millénaire. Pour composer The Heart of Lithuania (“Au cœur de la Lituanie”), Jacob de Haan s’est inspiré de cinq mélodies traditionnelles particulièrement en vogue dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Bien que ces chantsproviennent de Haute Lituanie, ils sont appréciés sur l’ensemble du territoire et sont encore chantés aujourd’hui. Le choix des chants et la diversité des émotions qu’ils expriment travers des lignes mélodiques typées emportent l’auditeur au cœur de l’ me lituanienne.

This work is based on the 13th Century Dies irae (Day of Wrath) attributed to Thomas von Celano. Many famous composers have already employed this originally Gregorian chant in their works, including Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, Mahler and Lizst. In Jan de Haan’s Song of David - the title of which is taken from the third line of the Dies Irae text - the theme is presented in unison initially and then reappears in various guises.

Dit werk is gebaseerd op het 13e eeuwse Gregoriaanse Dies Irae zoals we dit ook kennen uit werken van Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, Mahler en Liszt. Voor de titel van dit werk waarin hij het thema verschillende gedaantes meegeeft, haalde Jan de Haan zijn inspiratie in de derde zin van het Dies Irae, waarin verwezen wordt naar David.

Dieses Werk basiert auf dem Dies Irae (Tag des Zorns) aus dem 13. Jahrhundert, das Thomas von Celano zugeschrieben wird. Bereits mehrere berühmte Komponisten, wie Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, Mahler und Liszt, haben den ursprünglichen gregorianischen Choral in ihren Werken verwendet. In Jan de Haan Song of David, dessen Titel auf die dritte Textzeile von Dies Irae verweist, wird das Thema zunächst einstimmig präsentiert und erscheint dann in verschiedenen Gewändern.

Cette œuvre s’inspire du Dies Irae attribué Tomaso da Celano, que l’on considère comme l’auteur de la version définitive de ce poème écrit au XIIIe siècle. ‘Spirit of Independence’ was commissioned by the Koninklijke Fanfare ‘Onafhankelijkheid’ (‘Independence’) from Wiekevorst (Belgium) on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. The piece depicts an enthusiastic amateur music club, practicing and making music together in an attentive and companionable atmosphere. The conductor has the good habit of trying to improve the sound of the fanfare by means of practicing chorales and hymns. Jan Van der Roost has used these facts in the dynamic concert piece ‘Spirit of Independence’: a chorale-like middle section is surrounded by music bubbling full of energy.

The Blues is a well-known style of popular music. The name does not come out of thin air. After all, the term ‘blues’ refers to a state of mind: with the sentence ‘I got the blues’ someone means they are in low spirits. The blues originate in the melancholic music that the slaves in the southern United States made to relieve their depressing circumstances to some extent. This new concert work makes use of ‘blue notes’ (the flattened 3rd and 7th notes of the scale) which give this exciting work its blues sound.

Roland Kernen erinnert in seinem Stück Blues Forever an den Ursprung des Blues in der melancholischen Musik der schwarzamerikanischen Sklaven in den Südstaaten der USA. Die Musik drückte das tiefe Leid aus, diente aber zugleich als Trost und Stärkung. Charakteristisch für diesen Musikstil ist damals wie heute die Verwendung so genannter blue notes“, die auch in Kernens authentischem, bewegenden Werk häufig auftauchen.

Le blues s’est façonné dans les plantations du Sud des États-Unis. C’est dans cette musique mélancolique que les esclaves tentèrent d’apaiser quelque peu les souffrances d’une vie de misère. Le blues devient alors source de consolation. Parmi les éléments qui caractérisent ce genre musical, on trouve les blue notes, composantes fondatrices du style, qui apparaissent également dans cette composition de Roland Kernen.

The Beatles remain the biggest-selling British group of all time with their countless hits and timeless classics written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. All You Need Is Love is one such song that recently made it into the top 40 pop songs of all time. In this arrangement Thijs Oud has utilised all the original Beatles elements whilst, at the end, integrating ‘snippets’ of many more of their hits. Perfect for all concert programmes this will also make an excellent finale to your events.

The powerful, dynamic number Gospel John, by the versatile Americancomposer, producer and music educator Jeff Steinberg, is known inparticular through performances by Maynard Ferguson. In his versionit seemed as if a typical Afro-American preacher ascended the pulpitand impassioned an enthusiastic congregation with his fiery plea.This exciting arrangement by Lorenzo Bocci has the same compellingtemperament and adds an energetic touch to any concert.

Het stevige, dynamische nummer Gospel John van de veelzijdige Amerikaanse componist, producer en muziekdocent Jeff Steinberg is vooral bekend in de uitvoering van de in 2006 overleden Maynard Ferguson. In zijn versie lijkthet alsof een typisch Afro-Amerikaanse predikant de kansel bestijgt en een enthousiaste gemeente in vervoering brengt met zijn vurige betoog. Dit spetterende arrangement van Lorenzo Bocci heeft hetzelfde meeslepende temperament enzorgt voor een energieke noot in elk concert.

Elle a fait le tour du monde gr ce l’interprétation légendaire du jazzman canadien Maynard Ferguson, qui nous a quittés en 2006. Sa version donnait littéralement vie un pasteur afro-américain qui, du haut de sa chaire, tenait un discours enflammé une assistance enthousiaste.Cet arrangement passionnant, signé Lorenzo Bocci, restitue le caractère fascinant de l’original et apporte une touche de fraîcheur et de pétillant tout programme de concert.

John Blanken schuf eine schwungvolle Bearbeitung zu dem bekannten schottischen Volkslied Scotland the Brave. Der Bearbeiter passte das wieder erkennbare Thema dem Swing-Stil an und auch die langen, Bordun ähnlichen Töne erinnern an das beliebte Dudelsackstück. Swingin' Kilts ist eine Herausforderung für jede Formation. Es stellt gewisse Anforderungen an Timing und Technik, die diesem Werk die Bravour verleihen, welche das Publikum ebenso wie die Musiker in Schwung versetzen wird.
