Commedia,
subtitled “for
(almost) 18th-century
orchestra,†boldly
trots out some of the
orchestral cliches of the
late 18th and early 19th
centuries. It was
influenced, as its title
suggests, by the commedia
del'arte (albeit
distantly) - the stock
characters tossed against
each other in a variety
of situations, often
comic, but, as evidenced
in the paintings of a
Longhi or a Magnasco, not
without a dark side. Much
of the piece consists of
a tarantella or
saltarello in fast 6/8
time. Commissioned by the
Saint Paul Chamber
Orchestra and premiered
by the orchestra under
Sydney Hodkinson in
March, 1972.

The
contents of this volume
give a comprehensive
accountof the great
variety of musical forms
used in parish church and
Nonconformist worship in
the 18th century. Each of
the 103 pieces has been
chosen because the
editors believe it to be
both rewarding to perform
and to listen to. At the
same time, they have
sought to represent every
important development in
English psalmody during
this period of profound
social and artistic
change.

The
second half of the 18th
century, for the people
of East Central Europe,
was the time of the
awakening of national
consciousness. The
leading force in the
Hungarian enlightenment,
the lesser nobility, also
regarded as important the
national character of the
country's culture. A
valuable kind of national
music was the Hungarian
dance music that
flourished in the 18th
century. The greater part
of the repertoire
naturally perpetuates the
'Hungarian-style' pieces
from the previous
centuries (appearing in
foreign collections too
described as hungaricus,
ungaresca, saltus
hungaricus or Ungarischer
Tanz), but beside these
we can encounter
contemporary European
dances and entertaining
instrumental pieces in
almost every style. The
majority of the sources
are collections compiled
by non-professional
musicians and intendedfor
private music-making. In
this work the composer
uses melodies from the
18th-century Linus dance
collection, in trioform,
with harmonies and bass
appropriate to that
period. The musical
fabric is rich in
counterparts, the sound
is mademore colourful
with many kinds of
percussion instruments.
The register and rhythmic
simplicity of the parts
make thepieces easily
playable even by music
school
pupils.

An homage to Francois

Couperin, Ravel is less

in Couperin than in

preface, editor
Jean-Francois Monnard
explains how Ravel paid a
moving and intensely
personal tribute to the
events of World War I
with his multi-layered
work. The orchestral
version goes back to the
original, eponymous piano
suite (1914-17). Then, in
1919, the composer
selected four pieces from
this source, orchestrated
them with all of his
grace and artistry; the
result provides a
charming contrast to the
pseudo-Baroque musical
idiom, and places the
pieces in a new and
effective sequence. The
work quickly gained great
popularity immediately
after the concertant
world premiere, when the
three dance movements of
the orchestral suite were
included in a ballet
production.The
underpinnings of
Monnard's edition are
provided by the most
important sources. The
preface features a great
deal of information on
the interpretation and
performance history of
the work. This is the
fifth major Ravel work
