opens with a stern
fanfare in bare fifths,

This
celebratory work, which
Philip Sparke wrote for

hymn-like theme played as
a fanfare in the brass.
With a change of mood
from ‘solemn’ to
‘merry’ and back to
‘majestic’, together
with an unusual
orchestration, in which
may different instruments
feature and in which at
points the entire wind
orchestra shimmers in
tutti passages, A

musicians and public
alike.

Dieses
festliche Werk, das
Philip Sparke zum
20-jährigen Jubiläum
der Nottingham Concert
Band schreib, beginnt mit
einem hymnenartigen Motiv
zu Fanfaren im
Blechregister.
Stimmungswechsel von
feierlich zu fröhlich
und zurück zu
majestätisch sowie eine
ausgewogene
Orchestrierung, die viele
verschiedene Instrumente
hervorhebt und auch das
gesamte Blasorchester in
Tutti-Passagen glänzen
lässt, machen A

zu einem Genuss für
Musiker und
Publikum.
A
Nottingham Festival
débute par un motif
ascendant qui contraste
avec la fougueuse entrée
des cuivres. Puis
l’ambiance se fait
sereine pour introduire
une mélodie jouée par
les clarinettes et
accompagnée d’un motif
rythmique la caisse
claire. Un crescendo
mène un passage puissant
repris par l’orchestre
entier qui réintroduit
la trame initiale. Le
tableau final est
rehaussé par la reprise
majestueuse du thème
d’origine, interprété
cette fois par les
cuivres, où
s’entrelacent les
attrayantes répliques
des bois. Une coda
énergique met fin cette
somptueuse composition
qui souligne la force
créatrice du
compositeur.

Il pezzo apre con un

Cambiamenti di umore, dal

come anche

the 20th anniversary of
the Nottingham Concert
Band, starts with a
hymn-like theme played as
a fanfare in the brass.
With a change of mood
from ‘solemn’ to
‘merry’ and back to
‘majestic’, together
with an unusual
orchestration, in which
may different instruments
feature and in which at
points the entire wind
orchestra shimmers in
tutti passages, A
Nottingham Festival
is a real pleasure for
musicians and public
alike.
Dit
feestelijke werk schreef
Philip Sparke in opdracht
van de Nottingham Concert
Band, ter gelegenheid van
het twintigjarig jubileum
van het orkest. Een
uitdagend concertwerk met
vele sfeerwisselingen,
waaraan uw muzikanten en
publiekveel aardigheid
zullen
beleven!
Dieses
festliche Werk, das
Philip Sparke zum
20-jährigen Jubiläum
der Nottingham Concert
Band schreib, beginnt mit
einem hymnenartigen Motiv
zu Fanfaren im
Blechregister.
Stimmungswechsel von
feierlich zu fröhlich
und zurück zu
majestätisch sowie eine
ausgewogene
Orchestrierung, die viele
verschiedene Instrumente
hervorhebt und auch das
gesamte Blasorchester in
Tutti-Passagen glänzen
lässt, machen A
Nottingham Festival
zu einem Genuss für
Musiker und
Publikum.
A
Nottingham Festival
débute par un motif
ascendant qui contraste
avec la fougueuse entrée
des cuivres. Puis
l’ambiance se fait
sereine pour introduire
une mélodie jouée par
les clarinettes et
accompagnée d’un motif
rythmique la caisse
claire. Un crescendo
mène un passage puissant
repris par l’orchestre
entier qui réintroduit
la trame initiale. Le
tableau final est
rehaussé par la reprise
majestueuse du thème
d’origine, interprété
cette fois par les
cuivres, où
s’entrelacent les
attrayantes répliques
des bois. Une coda
énergique met fin cette
somptueuse composition
qui souligne la force
créatrice du
compositeur.
Quest
o brano festivo è stato
composto da Philip Sparke
per il 20° anniversario
di fondazione della

Il pezzo apre con un
motivo simile a un inno.
Cambiamenti di umore, dal
festoso al divertito per
poi tornare al maestoso,
come anche
un’orchestrazione
bilanciata che riesce a
mettere in risalto molti
strumenti come anche
l’organico nei passaggi
in tutti, fanno di A
Nottingham Festival
un vero piacere musicale
per esecutori e
pubblico.

In 2008,
composer Philip Sparke
published the latest
volume of his
instrumental books, Super
Solos. Young German
flautist Meinhard
Drescher was so taken
with these solos that his
father secretly
commissioned the composer
toarrange three of the
solos (Little Overture,
Berceuse and Moto
Perpetuo) into a
mini-concerto for flute
and concert band, which
was presented to Meinhard
as a 16th birthday
present. Concertino
Classico is in the
standardquick-slow-quick

played by flute, clarinet

In
2008 publiceerde Philip
Sparke zijn lesboek
Super Solos, het
derde deel in een serie
voor fluit, klarinet,

euphonium. Een jonge
Duitse fluitist was zo
enthousiast over deze
solowerken,dat zijn vader
een arrangement van drie
van de stukken in het
geheim bij de componist
in opdracht gaf. En dit
hier is het resultaat!

A superb
piece by the magnificent
Kaija Saariaho completed
in 1990. Oi Kuu
translated as for a moon
is set for Bass Clarinet
and Cello with a duration
of approximatley 6
minutes. It signalled a
brief period between two
large orchestral works,
Du Cristal and A La Fumee
and consists of
multiphonies created and
encountered between Bass
Clarinet and Cello. Full
of colour, it is
typically expressive with
unusual sounds and manual
effects. Oi Kuu was
commissioned by Kari
Kriikku and Anssi
Karkttunen and has been
dedicated to them. A
version for Bass Flute
and Cello is available on
KP00533.

NOTE: The year 2020
has definitely been a
very challenging year
with many upheavals.
During this time of the
COVID-19 health crisis,
wearing masks, and high
racial tensions, I
decided to compose four
short solo woodwind works
for flute, oboe,
clarinet, and bassoon,
which represent the core
woodwind section in an
orchestra. I was inspired
to compose these short
pieces after I first
heard Igor Stravinsky's
three short pieces for
clarinet, which totals a
little more than four
minutes in duration. I
thought that it would be
nice to highlight and
honor my African-American
male colleagues in the
orchestral music world. I
wanted to celebrate the
fact that they are the
principal player in the
section of their
respective orchestras.
The short pieces are as
follows: Principal
Brother No. 1 for flute
solo for Demarre McGill,
Principal Flute of the
Seattle Symphony
Orchestra, Principal
Brother No. 2 for oboe
solo for Titus Underwood,
Principal Oboe of the
Nashville Symphony
Orchestra, Principal
Brother No. 3 for
clarinet solo for Anthony
McGill, Principal
Clarinet of the New York
Philharmonic, and
Principal Brother No. 4
for bassoon solo for
Bryan Young, Principal
Bassoon of the Baltimore
Chamber Orchestra. These
works all begin with
notes that are
representative of their
name; D for Demarre, B
for Titus (ti in solfège
starting on C), A for
Anthony, and Bb for
Bryan. There is also a
rhythmic figure in the
opening measures of each
piece, which represent
the utterance of their
names. All four of these
works are rhapsodic in
nature with elements of
improvisation. - James
Lee III.
