The
alto cantata Geist und
Seele wird verwirret has
seven movements; in the
opening movements of the
two parts of the cantata,
a lost concerto by Bach
survives in its original
form, which he had
arranged for organ. There
is also an obbligato
organ part in all the
three arias, sometimes
including virtuosic
writing. Lehms takes the
Gospel reading for the
12th Sunday after
Trinity, which deals with
the healing of a deaf and
dumb person, and makes it
apply more universally:
God wants to open the
ears of the faithful soul
and loosen its tongue, so
that it can praise his
wonderful works. Unlike
most of the other
cantatas, in line with
the text model Bach
avoids the use of a choir
for the concluding
movement of the work. The
cantata was written for
the 12th Sunday after
Trinity which fell on 8
September 1726 in the
year of its first
performance. The text
comes from the collection
Gottgefalliges
Kirchen-Opffer by Georg
Christian Lehms, who was
court poet and court
librarian in Darmstadt.
From his Weimar period
onwards, Bach set several
texts from this

Moving On was
commissioned by the Tokyo
Kosei Wind Orchestra and
was part of a tour
programme they gave in
May 2012, a tour which
included many areas that
had been devastated by
the 2011 earthquake and
tsunami.The theme of the
piece is the powerful
ability of mankind to
overcome such disasters
and look forward to a
positive future; it opens
in an appropriately
optimistic mood,
featuring bright
orchestral colours and
extensive syncopation. A
chorale-like fanfare is
soon introduced on horns
and euphonium, answered
by chirpy woodwinds. The
mood subsides until an
alto saxophone introduces
a brief quotation from
the composer's The Sun
Will RiseAgain, which
was written to raise
funds for victims of the
2011 disaster. The mood
soon changes and the
horns introduce a noble
theme under woodwind
flourishes. This leads to
the main Vivo
section of the piece
which is characterised
again by strong
syncopations as part of a
florid theme in the low
woodwinds. This melody
undergoes varied
development by all
sections of the band
until the horn fanfare
returns triumphally on
the brass. This is
extended and leads to a
faster coda which brings
together previous
material in counterpoint
to close the work in
optimistic mood.

was originally composed
for brass band in 1973.
The work is in three
movements, and uses
material based on the
13th century plainsong
'Dies Irae. the opening
Intrada is sombre. the
second movement is a
'chorale and variations.
the chorale melody
follows the main outline
of the plainsong. the
five variations are
varied in mood and
intensity. the final
March is much happier in
mood and has a lyrical
tune in the middle first
heard on horns. However,
references to the 'Dies
Irae' are still apparent
and the final bars of the
work contain a quote from
the opening movement.

Antithigram is coined
from the words antithesis
and program. The work is
bi-thematic -- the first
theme comprised of eleven
notes, the second
(beginning at measure 63)
more like a chorale in
structure. A four-note
tone cluster (B flat, C,
F sharp, B natural)
appears in the first
measure, and subsequently
appears as an arpeggiated
ostinato (B flat, C, and
F sharp, in orchestra
bells and vibraphone)
that underpins and
adheres subsequent
sections. After the
themes are treated in a
number of traditional
ways (two-voice
counterpoint, canon,
chorale, and diminution)
they are joined at
measure 110 in a
polychordal statement.
The work should be
performed with energy,
with special attention to
a precise and lively
style of articulation.
