According
to world-renowned
composer and arranger
Cedric Dent, his version
of “Mary Had a Little
Lamb” was originally
conceived as a piece for
a vocal quartet where
vocal jazz meets the
traditional choral style
(think of the Manhattan
Transfer singing an
anthem in the traditional
choral style). It has
since been performed
primarily by traditional
choral ensembles. The
title of the piece, from
a familiar nursery rhyme
song, ties in with the
message of the Advent
season: a celebration of
the birth of the Messiah
- the Lamb of God! Cedric
Dent's choral writing is
truly impressive, and
your choirs will enjoy
learning and performing
this incredible work.

Love Came
Down at Christmas began
as a hymn using only the
third stanza for our
congregation to sing at
the end of each service
during Advent 2021. In
2022, I wrote the choral
version for the North
Mesquite Chamber Singers
from North Mesquite High
School, Ryan Forkner,
director.Ryan is also the
choral director at my
church where he and
the Singers have
presented a Christmas
concert for the past
sixteen years. Love Came
Down at Christmas was
sung at the 2022
Christmas concert. It is
one of many pieces that I
have written for this
concert over those
years.I hope you enjoy
this setting and the
wonderful Christina
Rossetti text.—Tom

for courses on the

this volume could suffice

that it touches on the

Pedagogy Proksch’s
new collection of
documents is a most
welcome step in the
direction of getting [the
story of bands] under
control. The
juxtaposition of
documents from so many
levels and types of
ensembles proves to have
a cumulative effect: one
begins to see the subtle
and long-lasting
connections among them
despite the big
differences. It is easy
to envision it as a
supplemental text in a
course on band history

book is also just an
absorbing read. There is
much to learn here, and
much to enjoy.

 Notes 79/2 (December
2022): 217-218 This is
the story of the American
wind band, told
chronologically by those
who experienced it in
real time from 1835 to
1935. How did bands
become bands? How did
they rise in popularity?
Which figures had

Through source documents
and articles, Bryan
Proksch takes us on an
extraordinary journey
from the time of the
first brass bands in the
1830s, through the Civil
War and the golden ages
of Gilmore and Sousa, to
the cusp of the wind
ensemble just before
World War II. Hear from a
