composed in its first
form in E flat, right at
the beginning of Bach's
period in Leipzig, for
the Visitation of Mary on
2.7.1723; for a further
performance on the 1st
day of Christmas, Bach
added four extra
Christmas movements
following a Leipzig
tradition. Only in the
1730s did Bach arrange
the Magnificat in the
well-known version in D;
the orchestration was
slightly altered,
particularly improving
the considerable
practical performance
problems encountered in
the E flat major version.

contains the version of
the Magnificat in D,
based on Bach's autograph
score. For Christmas

BWV 1022 are concealing
an original work for

continuo a work that can
easily be reconstructed
by a Bach expert. Hofmann
has already given ample
proof of his unerring
sense of style and
authenticity in the two B
flat major Trio Sonatas
(KM 2277 and M 2287). He
diplomatically attributes
the authorship of the
newly recovered sonata to
both Johann Sebastian and
his son Carl Philipp
Emanuel to equal extents.
This should preclude any
posthumous family
arguments, and lovers of

The
Pentecost cantata Desired
ray of light BWV 184 is
based on a Kothen
composition, probably a
congratulatory cantata,
whose instrumental parts
(only these have
survived) Bach reused in
the Leipzig Pentecost
cantata. Only the chorale
setting was evidently
newly composed. Despite
the narrow leeway that
the already finished
composition left for the
librettist, he
nevertheless succeeded in
crafting a coherent
Pentecost text. The fact
that the cantata begins
with a long tenor
accompagnato with two
flutes followed by a
pastoral duet is
surprising. The placing
of the chorale not at the
end of the work but
before the concluding
chorus is unusual. Bach
was evidently aware of
the effect that the
ending of this lively
movement would have and
wanted to retain this in
its sacred form as well.
The sacred version was
first performed on the
third day of Pentecost in
1724, probably after a
parody version of another
Kothen cantata (BWV 173)
had already been
performed on the second
day of Pentecost. Score

Wind Dances
is in seven short
contrasting movements,
each containing
dance-like rhythms, both
slow and fast. Having two
sons who both play the
clarinet, I've heard many
a woodwind quintet, so
I've been wanting to
write for the medium for
quite a while. In this
instance, I also added my
own instrument, the
piano.The work opens with
a fast movement
containing driving
rhythms in the winds,
which are then answered
by the piano. The second
movement features
colorful effects in the
winds and piano (slap
tongue, air sounds, muted
tones) leading to a long
extended lyrical line,
gradually orchestrated to
involve all the winds.
The third movement is a
dynamic scherzo, with a
separate middle section
similar to a traditional
Trio section. The slowly
unfolding fourth movement
is the longest of the
piece and anchors the
middle of the work. The
fifth movement is a kind
of echo of the third
movement, though this
time the dynamic scherzo
is high and light, rather
than low and dark. The
sixth movement is related
to the second movement,
and is basically a solo
cadenza for the clarinet,
with a few
accompanimental gestures
in the piano. The seventh
and final movement
reprises material from
the first movement, this
time with new and driving
dance-like gestures

olf Mauersberger, the
cantor of the Dresden
Kreuzkirche, shaped his
Christvesper in the
Christmas tradition of
the Erzgebirge in Saxony.
The work underwent a long
period of gestation and
first attained its final
form in 1963. The entire
church is used for a
performance: On the altar
the Christmas story from
Luke is presented, in
four different corners of
the church the Quempas or
responsorial singing
between congregation and
cantor takes place, and
in the gallery Die
Weissagung or Ehre sei
Gott in der Hohe are
sung; in addition the
chorales and songs are
performed by a separate
group of instruments.
Thus the Christvesper,
this impressive choral
work which is still in
the realm of tonality,
provides a new accent in
the well-known Christmas
repertoire. Score

orchestra, commissioned
by Donald McDonald for
the 21st birthday of the
Scottish Chamber
Orchestra and the 60th
birthday of the composer.
It was first performed in
November 1993 in Glasgow,
by James Clark and the
Scottish Chamber
Orchestra conducted by
Maxwell Davies. The spell
is one quoted by George
Mackay Brown in his book
An Orkney Tapestry: 'Let
not plough be put to acre
except a fiddle cross
first the furrow.'
Davies's dancing concerto
imagines the fiddler
following a route from
field to field, from
dance to dance,
accompanied by a bunch of
companions in the form of
an orchestra. As the
music goes on, so it gets
brighter and livelier,
moving from the dark
colouring of clarinets,
bassoons and strings to
full ensemble with
prominent brass and
(solo) tuned percussion,
as if the dancers as much
as the fields were
beginning to glow with
