The Czech composer Franti?ek Xaver Du?ek (1731-1799) was a leading figure in Prague's music life in the latter half of the 18th century. He was an outstanding pianist, composer and piano teacher whose pupils included Leopold Ko?eluch.Now all of Du?ek's 21 sonatas, many of which have until now been available only in old prints or manuscripts, are appearing in two volumes.The editor, Vojtech Spurný, has carefully collected and compared archival sources strewn throughout Europe.The sonatas, arranged in chronological order by date of publication, now appear for the first time in critical editions. Both sonatas – along with the preceding sonata with the funeral march op. 26, and the three sonatas op. 31 soon to follow – usher in Beethoven ’s conquest of new musical territory in this genre. With a complex structure that oscillates between fantasia and sonata, op. 27 no. 1 has long presented pianists with great interpretive challenges that, once they have been overcome, bring to light a true jewel. César Franck's Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the violin repertoire, a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugene Ysaye.After Franck's death in 1890 the original publisher of the Sonata, the Parisian house Julien Hamelle, announced an arrangement of the work for viola, but it has not been possible to locate any copy of this publication. The present arrangement for viola is largely based on Jules Delsart's arrangement for piano and cello, the only version of the Sonata which the composer authorized. However, the viola part here also adopts extensive passages in their original register or remains in the middle octave, especially in those passages where the cello lies two octaves beneath the violin. Being set in the alto register, the part thus lies between the other two string versions, lending the Sonata a delightful hybrid hue beyond the brilliance of the violin and the sonorousness of the cello. The piano part has been left intact and is thus identical to that of the original version. / Alto Et Piano

L’édition Urtext en trois volumes des sonates pour piano de Franz Schubert aux éditions Henle contient dans ce volume I sept sonates des deux premières périodes toutes passées à la postérité avec desnuméros d’opus spécifiques. Seules deux furent éditées du vivant de Schu-bert. Le volume commence par la sonate sans doute la plus connue de ces deux périodes, la sonate en La majeur D 664, op. post. 120. Par FAURE GABRIEL. Immediately after finishing his second Violin Sonata op. 108, Fauré started work on a sonata for Cello and Piano in early 1917, thus realising a long-conceived plan. In their predisposition and attitude, both works are very closely related. In the Cello sonata, a sombre, dramatic opening movement is also followed by a calm, relaxed slow middle movement and a graceful finale. The critical response to the first performances was subdued, but on account of increasing interest in Fauré ’s complete late chamber music, this sonata has recently been rediscovered as a substantial part of his oeuvre. The Henle Urtext edition constitutes the first criticaledition of this work.
