Score + Parties. Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. Beethoven wrote his Horn Sonata op. 17 for Johann Wenzel, one of the most famous horn players of his day. According to an anecdote from Beethoven's pupil Ferdinand Ries, he only completed it on the day before the première. Nevertheless, the piece was a rousing success. As the horn part demands a masterly technique, the publisher of the first print, Tranquillo Mollo et Comp., issued the piece in 1801 with an alternative part for violoncello. Since the autograph score has not survived, Jonathan Del Mar has based his scholarly-critical edition mainly on this first print. Misha Donat provides an informative Foreword on the work's history and genesis (Eng/Ger) and the edition is rounded off by a Critical Commentary (Eng) with a complete description of the sources as well as a page in facsimile./ Répertoire / Piano, Cor ou Violoncelle

Beethoven's four-movement Sonata in A-flat major op. 26 belongs to his most popular works. It is dedicated to Prince Lichnowsky, one of his most generous patrons and the dedicatee of, for example, the Grande Sonate pathétique op. 13 and Symphony No. 2 op. 35. The work's initial drafts date from 1800-01 - it was first published in March 1802. This demanding sonata is highly varied in its form: it begins with a set of variations and contains the famous Marcia funebre sulla morte d'un Eroe as its third movement, earning it the nickname 'Sonata with the Funeral March?. The identity of the title's eroe (hero) remains unknown to the present day. The march was performed at Beethoven's funeral on 29 March 1827 in an arrangement for orchestra.For this Bärenreiter edition Jonathan Del Mar, possibly as one of the first editors of a modern edition, consulted the composer's autograph in the original. This enabled him to decipher details of Beethoven's handwriting in particular with regard to the exact notation of doubtful slurs. The result is a most reliable and thoroughly-researched musical text. Differing readings and editorial decisions are documented in the Critical Commentary. The edition has been finely engraved and includes practical page turns. Beethoven's Sonata in F major op. 54 was written in 1804, just after the highly virtuosic 'Waldstein' Sonata and before the 'Appassionata' Sonata, and has unjustly stood in the shadow of its predecessor and successor ever since. Its two movements are characterized by the friction between traditional form and creative abandon. While the opening movement marked 'In Tempo d'un Menuetto' plays with Baroque gestures and a sharply contrasting, metrically distorted 'Trio', the toccata-like 'Allegretto' fluctuates between etude and sonata form. The unusual construction of the sonata caused perplexity even with notable critics who found themselves at a loss, unable to recognize the master. Für Klavier und Orchester. Par ROSLER JOHANN JOSEF. Johann Joseph Rösler (1771-1812) was a composer, conductor and pianist who was active in Prague and Vienna. Later he was in the service of Prince Franz Joseph von Lobkowitz. His Piano Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major of 1803 is a fitting companion to the piano concertos of Beethoven - indeed, his first Piano Concerto in D major was mistakenly attributed to Beethoven until 1925. Now Rösler's second Piano Concerto is appearing in print for the first time. This is due to editor Alena Hönigová discovering and identifying an autograph score which is the only preserved source in the Prague Conservatory archive.
