When Haydn
stopped in Passau on his
second journey to
England, he heard a vocal
version of his own
orchestral work “The
Seven Last Words.” It
had been made by the
Kapellmeister at Passau
cathedral Joseph Friebert
and Haydn was quite
impressed – except:
“I believe I could have
done the voice parts
better.” He acquired a
copy and set about making
his own vocal version,
taking over most of the
text. Haydn particularly
liked his own vocal work
and it was also
enthusiastically received
by his contemporaries.
The study edition is
based on the volume (HN
5822) published as part
of the Complete Edition
by the Joseph Haydn
Institute in Cologne.

Written in 2014, this
work focuses exclusively
on a single note - the
drone? This particular
sonority, is on, is
ubiquitously present
throughout the piece; the
music begins and ends
with it, and its echo is
felt even when the actual
sound is not heard! But
it is always there in the
background and it serves
as a nucleus with a
gravitational sonic
power, around which the
identity of the music is
displayed. The title
alludes to the genre of
capriccio, in terms
ofboth its free formal
design and the overall
character of the music,
which invariably
consistsof rhythmic
gestures with a high
degree of virtuosity. And
who better than its
dedicatee, with whom I
have collaborated for a
number of years now,
could give all these and

This
edition of Michael
Colgrass' Sea Shadow
includes all of his
original musical and
choreographical markings,
allowing for a better
understanding of the work
as a whole. The ballet
was originally intended
to be choreographed to
Ravel's Concerto in G
minor, but when rights to
the work were taken away
just days before the
performance, Colgrass
offered to write a new
score for the
twelve-minute ballet
overnight. The next day,
Colgrass' Sea Shadow was
performed by the Joffrey
Ballet at New York City
Center in April of 1966.
By April 1989, the
original Ravel score was
made available again, and
the ballet was revived
with it.

ata is a first-year band
piece with a Latin dance
flavor. It is an
excellent study in
independent part-playing
for young bands. Balance
is crucial among the
following parts:1.
Percussion must be steady
and not overpowering. The
cowbell should be played
with a mallet or stick
that will prevent its
sound from being dominant
in the percussion
section.2. The bass line
will require a delicate
staccato articulation.3.
Clarinets and horns must
play the ostinato
beginning at m. 5 in two-
or four-measure phrases.
This line must always
feel unbroken.4. Trumpets
must also use a delicate
staccato at m. 17.
Straight mutes are a nice
touch if the section is
big enough. Cup mutes are
even better. A small
trumpet section may play
open.5. Flutes and alto
saxes should always play
legato when carrying the
melody.The contrasting
middle section, beginning
at m. 28, should be
articulated smoothly by
the whole band. The
alternating melodic lines
should have tonal
contrast, but should be
the same dynamically. The
bass line should fade
into the background at
this point.A first-year
band can play Serenata
for their Spring
