This work was created as part of a Composition Seminar I took in 2004 at the U of C with David Eagle. It was dedicated to Kathryn Ladano, This work has also been interpreted by Harry Spanaay, Fernando Dominguez and Antonio Rosales. The material for this work was constructed using prepared piano and, several Mexican percussion instruments, which belong to the pre-hispanic period, such as the teponaztles (a hollowed trunk with two wedges to be stricken with drumsticks), and huesos de fraile (priest bones), which are actually seeds. The harmony and the melodic lines are based on the notes from the teponaztles and from a whirl xylophone, which is also included in the recording.

Giuseppe Torelli was born in Verona, Italy in 1658. He was a famous violinist, teacher, and composer. His career allowed travels to Germany and Vienna, but centered in Bologna, Italy, where he was a violinist and violist in the Accademia Filarmonica and later, worked as a musician at the Basilica San Petronio. Torelli was an especially important figure in the development of the instrumental concerto, with particular emphasis on both the solo concerto and concerto grosso forms.The Sinfonia in D Major (G21) is a piece originally scored for one or two trumpets, first and second solo violins, first and second ripieno violins, solo viola, ripieno viola, violoncello ripieno, violoncello continuo, violone ripieno, and organo.The exact date of the composition is not known, but the work is presumed to have been completed in the latter period. This edition is based on the autograph manuscript located in the musical archives at the Basilica San Petronio in Bologna, Italy.

This work is characterized by the use of modal scales, secundal harmony, hemiolas, and 5/8 and 7/8 time signatures. This piece was awarded a first prize by a competition organized by The University of York, England and the York Minster. It was premiered by the York Minster's male choir. The musical example that can be heard on this page, is interpreted by the Chamber Choir of the University of Calgary, Canada, conducted by Janos Horvath.
