In 1790, during the lifetime of Mozart and Haydn, Ernst Ludwig Gerber wrote of Ko?eluch in his famous handbook for musicians, 'without opposition, by young and old, (?) generally the best-loved composer alive today?. His works display 'liveliness and grace, the noblest of melodies with the purest of harmonies, and a pleasing organisation of rhythm and modulation.? Until now, pianists have had little chance to acquaint themselves with the complete range of Ko?eluch's sonatas since very few modern editions were available. For the first time, this new complete edition by Christopher Hogwood presents all of Ko?eluch's sonatas for keyboard solo. The four volumes each contain 12 to 13 sonatas, and the works are presented chronologically according to the date of their first publication. Volume IV will contain those sonatas that are found only in hand-written sources.- First complete edition of the sonatas for keyboard by Leopold Ko?eluch- Fills a gap in Czech and Middle-European Classical repertoire- Suitable for amateurs as well as professionals- ideal for teaching purposes- Includes a detailed introduction (Eng/Czech/Ger), critical commentary (Eng) and facsimile pages from the sources / Piano

Bärenreiter continues its Urtext edition of the complete Beethoven piano sonata...(+)
Bärenreiter continues its Urtext edition of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas with an important contribution. The frequently played Sonatas op. 2, Nos. 1-3, stem from the time when the young composer took lessons from Joseph Haydn in Vienna and are dedicated to his teacher. After Beethoven's three early sonatas which he wrote as a youth in Bonn, the so-called 'Kurfürsten-Sonaten?, Beethoven started 10 years later, in the mid 1790s, to develop a style independent from the legacy of Mozart and Haydn and presented with his op. 2 his first fully valid piano sonatas. The acclaimed Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar has consulted every known source for this scholarly-critical Urtext performing edition. In addition he has analysed various copies of the prints published during Beethoven's lifetime. The result of his accurate research is presented in a meticulously edited musical text at the cutting edge of scholarship, together with a detailed Critical Commentary. The volume stands out in terms of its elegant and well-presented layout. Special emphasis has been placed on optimum page-turns and on the consideration of the flow of the music. The highly informative Introduction on the genesis and significance of the sonatas is supplemented by valuable notes on historical performance practice. - New scholarly-critical performing edition at the cutting edge of scholarship - Optimum page-turns - Introduction with valuable notes on historical performance practice (Eng/Ger) - Detailed Critical Commentary (Eng) / Piano

The composer, pianist and piano teacher Leopold Ko?eluch (1747-1818) was one of the leading Czech musicians in 18th-century Vienna. His 50 sonatas for keyboard bear witness not only to the transition from the harpsichord or clavichord to the pianoforte, but also to the evolution of the classical sonata at the turn of the 19th century.Until now there have been few modern editions of this music. Our new edition, prepared by Christopher Hogwood, is the first to present all of Ko?eluch's sonatas for solo keyboard. Par FAURE GABRIEL. Immediately after finishing his second Violin Sonata op. 108, Fauré started work on a sonata for Cello and Piano in early 1917, thus realising a long-conceived plan. In their predisposition and attitude, both works are very closely related. In the Cello sonata, a sombre, dramatic opening movement is also followed by a calm, relaxed slow middle movement and a graceful finale. The critical response to the first performances was subdued, but on account of increasing interest in Fauré ’s complete late chamber music, this sonata has recently been rediscovered as a substantial part of his oeuvre. The Henle Urtext edition constitutes the first criticaledition of this work. David Geringas, a master of his craft, supplied the markings in the Cello part. / Kolb, Fabian / Répertoire / Violoncelle et Piano

César Franck's Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works i...(+)
César Franck's Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the violin repertoire, a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugene Ysaye. After Franck's death in 1890 the original publisher of the Sonata, the Parisian house Julien Hamelle, announced an arrangement of the work for viola, but it has not been possible to locate any copy of this publication. The present arrangement for viola is largely based on Jules Delsart's arrangement for piano and cello, the only version of the Sonata which the composer authorized. However, the viola part here also adopts extensive passages in their original register or remains in the middle octave, especially in those passages where the cello lies two octaves beneath the violin. Being set in the alto register, the part thus lies between the other two string versions, lending the Sonata a delightful hybrid hue beyond the brilliance of the violin and the sonorousness of the cello. The piano part has been left intact and is thus identical to that of the original version. / Alto Et Piano

Viulusonaatti. Par KILPINEN YRJO. Yrjö Kilpinen (1892-1959) is most known for his hundreds of lieds and song cycles. His instrumental compositions have been less know, ie. the six piano sonatas and suite for gamba and piano. Large-scale Sonata for violin and piano is dated in 1935 with opus number 87. The work was never finished, and National Library in Helsinki holds several sketches and versions in its Kilpinen collection. In 2015 violinist Frida Backman commissioned a completion of the Sonata from composer Walter Wolff. Wolff worked on the sketches and versions until 2018, when the work was completed and the Sonata premiered. The present publication is the first publication of the Sonata. It sheds light to Kilpinen as an instrumental composer. The movements are: Allegro - Andante - Andante Moderato - Allegro / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Répertoire / Violon et Piano

Walther (1650-1717) performed as a violinist in the orchestra of Cosimo III from 1670 to 1674 (Medici dynasty) and served as concertmaster at the court in Dresden. Walther's compositions are contained in two books: Scherzi da Violino solo con il basso continuo (1676) and Hortulus Chelicus (1688). This book presents six sonatas for violin from Hortulus Chelicus transcribed for the mandolin. The collection is a wonderful addition to the classical mandolin repertoire. Johannes Brahms:The Works for one Instrument and PianoJohannes Brahms' compositions for one instrument and piano have been standards in chamber music literature ever since their inception. These works were written with specific performers in mind and Brahms worked closely with them when refining the final texts. Nevertheless, we rarely approach the music taking into consideration the possibilities of the instruments for which Brahms wrote or the performing practices of the individual players who first performed these compositions, including Brahms himself. The New Urtext EditionsBärenreiter's pioneering new scholarly-critical editions of Brahms' works for one instrument and piano are edited by a team of musicologists who are also performers. They offer today's musicians not just a reliable musical text based on all known sources, but also a comprehensive approach to the works, which aims to place them in their historical context and to elucidate the complex of meanings that the composer wished his notation to convey to performers. In addition to the musical text these editions offer an informative Introduction laying out the genesis, publication history and reception of the works. At the same time there is a complete list of the sources, an explanation of the editorial procedures and a Critical Commentary. Also, each volume contains a detailed discussion of specific performing practice issues raised by individual works. An integral part of Bärenreiter's Brahms publication complex is a text booklet which approaches general performance practice issues of the 19th century with regard to e.g. tempo, rubato, rhythmic flexibility and articulation. Furthermore musicians will find valuable information concerning vibrato, portamento and bowing. Last but not least characteristics of Brahms' own piano playing as well as that of his circle and contemporaries are discussed. The violin and viola sonata editions come not only with an Urtext part freed from all editorial emendations, but also with an additional part including fingering and bowing based on the practices of Joseph Joachim and his colleagues. These markings especially draw on publications of the sonatas edited by Joachim's pupils Leopold Auer and Ossip Schnirlin as well as those by Brahms' associate Franz Kneisel. A similar approach has been used for the violoncello sonatas, drawing on performance markings by Robert Hausmann (for whom Brahms wrote the Sonata in F major), Hugo Becker, with whom Brahms performed it, and Julius Klengel who was also close to his circle.Bärenreiter's new Brahms complex also importantly brings two neglected works back into the player's hands, namely the splendid versions of the op. 120 sonatas, originally written for viola or clarinet and piano. Brahms' arrangements for violin and piano unaccountably disappeared from the standard repertoire early in the 20th century. In these versions Brahms did not simply adjust the solo part for the violin, he made many alterations to the piano part, casting thought-provoking light on the clarinet and viola versions.- A pioneering set of Urtext editions- String editions include an Urtext solo part and a second part with fingering as well as performance markings- Each edition offers a preface on performance practice aspects pertaining to the respective works- A separate text booklet includes pioneering texts on general issues of performance practice in the 19th century as well as on specific issues with regard to Johannes Brahms' chamber music / Violon Et Piano

Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. Beethoven gave this sonata the unusual title “Sonata quasi una Fantasia, ” which it shares, along with its opus number, with the considerably more famous “Moonlight” Sonata. Both sonatas – along with the preceding sonata with the funeral march op. 26, and the three sonatas op. 31 soon to follow – usher in Beethoven ’s conquest of new musical territory in this genre. With a complex structure that oscillates between fantasia and sonata, op. 27 no. 1 has long presented pianists with great interpretive challenges that, once they have been overcome, bring to light a true jewel. G. Henle Publishers now also offers this sonata in a new edition, with provenfingering and interpretive suggestions by Murray Perahia and edited by the team of Beethoven experts Gertsch and Perahia. / Gertsch, Norbert / Perahia, Murray / Répertoire / Piano

Opus 13 - Grande Sonate Pathetique. Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. In a span of only eight years, between 1794–1802, Beethoven composed twenty Piano sonatas, among them his so-called “Grande Sonate Pathétique” op. 13. It marks the consummation of his Classical style, yet also already alludes to his Heroic Period with its intensely Romantic characteristics. Composed in the “tragic” key of C minor, it foreshadows the expressive drama of later masterworks such as the Fifth Symphony or the Coriolan Overture. Of the famous sonatas, this one is the most technically manageable and thus proves immensely popular with advanced Piano students. The new Urtext edition from G. Henle Publishers hails from the successful Beethoven collaboration between Norbert Gertsch and Murray Perahia, as usual with fingering and interpretive suggestions from the great pianist. / Gertsch, Norbert / Perahia, Murray / Répertoire / Piano
