Par ROSSINI GIOACHINO. Next to the 'Stabat Mater, ' the 'Petite Messe solennelle' of 1863 is Rossini’s second extensive sacred composition. Ostensibly, the work was an occasional piece, written for the dedication of a private chapel for the once well-to-do Parisian nobility. This explains the reduced instrumental accompaniment for two pianos and harmonium. Bach: Complete Organ Works Vol. 1 Preludes and Fugues I - with CD-ROM - ed. by David Schulenberg As close as possible to Bach In his ?Preludes and Fugues,? Johann Sebastian Bach made decisive contributions to the development of this genre tradition. The importance of this work group in his own organ oeuvre is confirmed by the many transmitted sources: hardly any autographs, but all the more copies. The genesis of the works and the question of versions associated with it are described at length in the introduction. In his new edition, editor David Schulenberg occasionally makes a new evaluation of the transmitted sources. To do so, he based himself as faithfully as possible on the manuscripts that can be traced back to Bach or to his circle. Here the American Bach expert generally chooses one source as his principal one. Divergences from other sources are documented in the Commentary. On the whole, the new Urtext edition sometimes also emends some long-cherished readings of ornaments, voice leading and notation. Also printed in Volume 1 is, for example, the early version of the C major Prelude BWV 545 as well as the inserted Trio movement of the three-movement version of this work. As with the previously published volumes, the CD-ROM enclosed in Volumes 1 and 2 contains dubious works and secondary versions for comparison with the principal versions. The String Quartet no. 4, subtitled 'Dedication', was commissioned by the CNDM of Madrid to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of Beethoven and was written for, and dedicated to, the Cuarteto Casals (2017). This one-movement work,lasting some 11 minutes, is based on a small motif from the op quartet. 130 as a tribute to the German master. The work, that explores the full range of the technical, musical, and emotional scope of the quartet medium, has aternary arrangement, with a slow introduction and a conclusive stretta on the B-flat note (like the one that opens Op. 130). Its course includes marked contrasts between the contemplative, lyrical, static and suspensive sections -in the manner of stagnations - and those with a more lively tempo, playful and occasionally festive./ Répertoire / Quatuor à Cordes

Par PUCCINI GIACOMO. With his Capriccio Sinfonico, SC 55, Giacomo Puccini completed his studies in 1883 at the Milan Conservatory. It is the most extensive of his three orchestral works and also his last. Apart from occasional smaller works, thereafter he dedicated himself only to opera. Nonetheless, the Capriccio Sinfonico plays an important role in Puccini’s oeuvre, not only as a source of motives for the operas which followed [for example, the beginning of the fast middle section of Capriccio Sinfonico appears almost note-for-note as the instrumental beginning of La Bohème], but also due to the fact that it is his first extensive composition which displays that very specific “Puccini sound”in which he attempted to combine the tradition of Italian bel canto style with Wagner’s treatment of motivic material and handling of the orchestra. Par BENEDICT ROBERT. A collection of the world's most famous carols arranged for piano students. Most are fairly easy and modern, with popular harmonic settings to appeal to young students and audiences alike. Harmonic textures vary from one piece with a single-line countermelody in the left hand to simple block, arpeggiated, or waltz-style chord accompaniments. A few pieces use slightly more elaborate 'boogie' accompaniments with grace notes or jazz-inspired harmonies. Melody lines occasionally move into the left hand for added interest. Regarded as the highlight among Chopin's polonaises, the great Polonaise in A flat major Op. 53 has also become known as 'octave polonaise' because of the distinctive octave passages in the middle section. As was customary at that time, the work was published in a German, English and French first edition each. There also exists an autograph which served as an engraver's copy for the German first edition. Some personal copies of Chopin pupils occasionally contain entries of the composer, thus providing additional information, e.g. original fingerings. Unfortunately, all three first editions contain a different, not always reliable text. The new edition of Wiener Urtext Edition is based substantially on the autograph and the - to a large extent - carefully revised German first edition, yet also takes some variants of the French first edition into account which give the impression of a last-hand version. The problems with regard to the sources and transmission are explained in detail in the preface and the critical notes. John Williams has written ceremonial music for many major events and ceremonies but of all these occasional pieces Summon the Heroes is the most elaborate and musically complex. It was composed for the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996 and performed at the opening ceremony. No group of works in Johann Sebastian Bach's output is as wide-ranging as the cantatas.
