We owe a debt of gratitude to the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld for making the elderly Brahms so interested in his instrument. In the 1890s the composer wrote the Trio op. 114, the Quintet op. 115 and the Sonatas op. 120 - three gems in the clarinet chamber music repertoire. Brahms also provided a part for viola as an alternative to the clarinet. The revision of our edition of the viola version of opus 120 is based on the musical text of the New Brahms Complete Edition and in many respects contains significant improvements: we were able to consult the autograph for the first time - the newly set piano score now contains the viola part - and viola players can benefit from fingerings and bowings by Tabea Zimmermann in the solo part. / Alto Et Piano

They offer today's musicians not just a reliable musical text based on all known sources, but also a comprehensive approach to the works, which aims to place them in their historical context and to elucidate the complex of meanings that the composer wished his notation to convey to performers.In addition to the musical text these editions offer an informative Introduction laying out the genesis, publication history and reception of the works. At the same time there is a complete list of the sources, an explanation of the editorial procedures and a Critical Commentary. Also, each volume contains a detailed discussion of specific performing practice issues raised by individual works.An integral part of Bärenreiter's Brahms publication complex is a text booklet which approaches general performance practice issues of the 19th century with regard to e.g. tempo, rubato, rhythmic flexibility and articulation. Furthermore musicians will find valuable information concerning vibrato, portamento and bowing. Que ne donnerions ­nous pas pour pouvoir rencontrer Schubert, Mozart ou Mahler, afin que, sur leurs conseils, notre jeu traduise bien ce qu'ils ont voulu exprimer !
Malgré cette proximité avec les compositeurs, j'entends souvent dire qu'il est nécessaire d'avoir une érudition spécifique pour pouvoir jouer de la musique contemporaine et l'apprécier. Le plus difficile au départ est de partir d'une feuille vierge, car nous n'avons pas de référence, ni de mémoire concernant cette musique, contrairement à une ?uvre de Brahms par exemple, dans laquelle nous pouvons retrouver une histoire, un héritage qui est en nous. L'approche de la musique contemporaine est donc forcément déroutante car elle n'est pas enracinée dans un vécu.
Pourtant, la démarche musicale me semble être la même en ce qui concerne la qualité de jeu, que l'?uvre jouée soit de style baroque, romantique, moderne ou contemporain.
L'expression et le discours musical sont les fils conducteurs, alliés à un respect du texte qui ne doit pas être laissé au hasard. Peu à peu nous créons notre histoire, en nous appropriant ce nouveau langage.
Ce recueil, fruit d'une collaboration très étroite avec chaque compositeur, fournit les clés nécessaires pour permettre la maîtrise des besoins instrumentaux spécifiques et pour accéder à la compréhension musicale des ?uvres. Ainsi, le choix de présenter différentes tablatures me paraissait important afin de confronter les élèves aux différentes annotations existantes. L'enregistrement des pièces sur CD est une référence supplémentaire.
Vous trouverez dans ce recueil un ensemble de pièces pour clarinette seule, de duos pour clarinettes et de pièces pour clarinette et piano, la plupart n'excédant pas deux minutes. Certaines pièces sont d'écriture plutôt classique comme Un, deux, trois? de E. Danajloska ou L'Arbre de P. Schoeller, d'autres font appel à des techniques de jeu contemporaines (sons multiphoniques, vibrato, flatterzungen, quarts de tons), comme Ondes de A. Posadas, Echoing Forest de F. Tanada, Double de J. L. Hervé ou Blues de B. Mantovani. Pour finir vous pourrez expérimenter l'improvisation contemporaine grâce à la pièce de C. Crousier Brouillasse-Broussaille.
Le choix des compositeurs s'est porté sur des artistes reconnus sur la scène internationale avec lesquels j'ai l'habitude de travailler avec l'ensemble L'Itinéraire .
