The alto cantata Geist und Seele wird verwirret has seven movements; in the opening movements of the two parts of the cantata, a lost concerto by Bach survives in its original form, which he had arranged for organ. There is also an obbligato organ part in all the three arias, sometimes including virtuosic writing. Lehms takes the Gospel reading for the 12th Sunday after Trinity, which deals with the healing of a deaf and dumb person, and makes it apply more universally: God wants to open the ears of the faithful soul and loosen its tongue, so that it can praise his wonderful works. Unlike most of the other cantatas, in line with the text model Bach avoids the use of a choir for the concluding movement of the work. The cantata was written for the 12th Sunday after Trinity which fell on 8 September 1726 in the year of its first performance. The text comes from the collection Gottgefalliges Kirchen-Opffer by Georg Christian Lehms, who was court poet and court librarian in Darmstadt. As with scarcely any other work of the 17th century, Monteverdi's Vespers has found its way into today's repertoire. Nevertheless, the Vespers still leaves open many questions. The new edition, with its critical examination of the sources, takes up these oft-discussed issues concerning scoring possibilities, performance practice, transpositions and liturgical unity. It is based on all of the surviving copies of the print of 1610 and the earliest handwritten entries have also been critically examined and evaluated. Johann Christian Bach was - as his father before him - only very seldom satisfied with the compositions that he put down on paper. Thus did this concerto too undergo many corrections/revisions by the composer and today consists of three movements of similar length. Although they were initially handed down separately at different locations, the motivic relationship as well as the melodic and figurative references among themselves clearly reveals the common identity of the three movements. In 1726 Johann Sebastian Bach performed a series of cantatas by his Meiningen cousin Johann Ludwig, then continued this series with his own works, but remained faithful to the textual models used his cousin: a Meiningen cycle of texts by an unknown author from the early 18th century. All these texts share the characteristic of including two quotations from the bible: one from the Old Testament at the beginning, and another from the New Testament in the middle. These cantatas include Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben BWV 102. The opening chorus in several sections is one of Bach's masterpieces of choral composition. The cantata is also one of those works on which Bach's later reputation was based: performances are documented from 1776 in Hamburg and in Berlin by Zelter's Sing-Akademie from 1813 onwards. Bac h's cantata BWV 26 belongs to the Leipzig cycle of chorale cantatas, 1724/25, and it was first performed on 19 November 1724. The underlying 13-vers hymn by Michael Franck provided Bach and his unidentified librettist with an abundance of metaphors and comparisons which, from verse to verse and movement to movement, illustrate the fleeting and transitory nature of earthly life: an impressive musical-poetic exposition of potent baroque pictures of vanity.. In 1726 Johann Sebastian Bach performed a series of cantatas by his Meiningen cousin Johann Ludwig, then continued this series with his own works, but remained faithful to the textual models used his cousin: a Meiningen cycle of texts by an unknown author from the early 18th century. All these texts share the characteristic of including two quotations from the bible: one from the Old Testament at the beginning, and another from the New Testament in the middle. These cantatas include Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben BWV 102. The opening chorus in several sections is one of Bach's masterpieces of choral composition. The cantata is also one of those works on which Bach's later reputation was based: performances are documented from 1776 in Hamburg and in Berlin by Zelter's Sing-Akademie from 1813 onwards.
