Text: Christoph
Kuffner.
In a
mixture of cantata and
concert piece, Beethoven
set a hymn to art in his
Choral Fantasy. The work,
about 20 minutes in
length, is often seen as
a precursor to the Ode to
Joy in the 9th Symphony.
After a piano
introduction, a dialog
between piano and
orchestra develops in the
space of just 400
measures, before the
soloists and chorus enter
for the last 200
measures. (If necessary,
the solo parts can be
sung by members of the
chorus or a semi-chorus.)
In the main section,
headed Finale (beginning
with the double basses
and celli), the theme
from Beethoven's early
song Gegenliebe (WoO 118,
also used in the Ode to
Joy) is presented, varied
and finally used in the
March in F major. The
main source of the Choral
Fantasia for the edition
is the first edition of
the parts, published in
1811 and corrected by
Beethoven; alongside this
an English edition of the
parts published by
Clementi (1810) has been
consulted for comparison.
The edition contains an
English singing version
in a translation by
Natalia Macfarren from
the 19th century. Score
and parts available

High
ly appealing to scholars
and amateur and
professional performers
alike, the nine pieces in
this collection comprise
all the known trio
sonatas that survive
complete and appear to
have been written in
England during the reign
of Charles II by
composers other than
Purcell. John Blow's G
minor Ground and Sonata
in A, and a G minor
sonata by Draghi, not
only stand comparison
with music of the younger
composer, but also, in
their varied approach to
form, throw fascinating
light on his more
Italianate approach to
the genre. All the
sonatas - works by Robert
King (a Sonetta after
the Italion way),
Johann Gottfried Keller,
Nicola Matteis senior and
Gerhard Diesineer - are
attractive to play and
listen to, and the
collection, also
including surviving
violin parts from works
by Blackwell and
Eastwick, significantly
extends our understanding
of the context in which
Purcell's famed sonatas
arose. Performing
material is

Robert
Schumann's Violoncello
Concerto op. 129 can be
regarded as the first
great concerto for this
instrument's repertoire.
It is thus somewhat
surprising that this work
had an extremely
problematic reception
history at the
outset.Schumann wrote the
score in 1850, during his
Dusseldorf years, but
there was neither a
concrete occasion nor a
soloist for a world
premiere. After its
publication, more years
elapsed before the world
premiere. It was only
towards the end of the
19th century that
Schumann's Cello Concerto
finally made its
breakthrough as a
repertoire piece. The
Urtext edition is based
on the original print of
the parts and the piano
reduction, which had
still been supervised by
Schumann. In addition,
the autograph of the
score was consulted for
purposes of comparison.
The internationally
renowned soloist Heinrich
Schiff took part in the
preparation of the
edition for violoncello
and piano. His
experiences have been
incorporated into his
arrangement of the solo
part. With his comments,
Schiff also provides
valuable tips on the
interpretation of the
work.

The cantata
Daran erkennen wir, dass
wir in Ihm bleiben is
intended for the first
Whitsun holiday. It is
based on a text by Johann
Christoph Wentzel
(1659-1723), the yearly
volume in which it
appears dates to August
4, 1703 and is dedicated
to, among others, Hn.
Joh. Kuhnau / | Chori

Leipzig Directori [Herr
Joh. Kuhnau / Director of
Choral Music at the City
of Leipzig]. It can be
assumed that Kuhnau's
composition originated
near the time of the
text, thus within his
first years in office as
the Leipzig St. Thomas
cantor. Kuhnau follows
the structure of
Wentzel's poem in a
Dictum and four verses
with introductory sonata,
although some details are
varied. In comparison to
other works by Kuhnau,
the scoring is fairly
large with five vocal
parts, trumpets, timpani,
oboes, and bassoon as
well as two violins and
violas each. The short
performing time, on the
other hand, makes the
cantata suitable for
liturgical use, too.Audio

John
Stanley's 30 Voluntaries
- published in three
collections as op. 5, 6,
and 7 - are amongst the
best-known organ works of
the 18th century. These
compositions in free
style were met with great
acclaim by his
contemporaries. The first
volume, published in
1748, immediately
achieved classic status
and encouraged other
composers to write
similar collections. The
op. 5 collection is now
published in an
up-to-date Urtext edition
by Carus, based on the
first printed edition and
a 1785 edition consulted
for comparison. The
pieces, of easy to medium
difficulty, are for
manuals (and can
alternatively also be
played on the
harpsichord), and mainly
comprise two movements in
the sequence slow - fast.
Rhythmic energy, richness
of color through the use
of solo registers such as
cornet and trumpet,
dialog between the
manuals with multiple
echo effects - these are
the characteristics of
these wonderful
compositions, which are
also suitable for use in
worship.

When
AntonÃn Dvorák
started composing his
String Quartet No. 10 in
late 1878, none of his
quartets had yet been
performed. However this
new work, deliberately
cast in the
“Slavonicâ€
style, quickly achieved
international renown and
has remained among one of
the most popular string
quartets by
Dvorák.
The
authoritative Dvorák
scholar Hartmut Schick
has consulted all
accessible sources, most
notably the printed score
published by Simrock and
the autograph. Now, after
many decades, a
definitive Urtext edition
of this major work can be
presented. In comparison
to the old Supraphon
edition of 1955, the new
publication includes a
detailed Critical

as edited early versions
of the middle movements
in the appendix. A
detailed Foreword

was written for the 3rd

text, the identity of
whose author is unknown,
is based on the
comparison between

prescribed in the Gospel

cantata dates from

The three
grands motets, Quam

and Deus noster refugium,
which Jean-Philippe
Rameau composed from 1713
to 1715 are still
relatively unknown today.
Yet these masterworks can
stand comparison to the
best works of
Michel-Richard de

testimony to Rameau's
great contrapuntal
mastery and contain
beautiful lyrical
passages. Quam dilecta
and Deus noster refugium
have survived only in
later sources which
originated in about 1770,
after Rameau's death, and
the works have been
rendered in a scoring
which does not correspond
to his intentions. The
present new edition
attempts for the first

as closely as possible to
their original form. The
edition of In convertendo

Like Hamlet
Overture, originating at
about the same time,
Tchaikovsky's 5th
symphony, composed in
1888, focuses on the
human existential
question: To be or not to
be - triumph over fate or
triumph of fate? The per
aspera ad astra
dramaturgy underlying the
symphony culminates in
triumphant certainty. If
Tchaikovsky was initially
euphoric, then severe
self-doubts befell him
after he conducted the
premiere in St.
Petersburg. These doubts
demonstrably led him to
make interpretative
changes for the Hamburg
performance in 1889,
including a cut in the
finale. Only with the
extremely positive
response to this
performance did his
doubts dispel.
Nevertheless, Tchaikovsky
himself never again
conducted the 5th
symphony. It was only
posthumously established
in the repertoire through
Arthur Nikisch's
commitment. The new
edition's textual
criticism takes into
account besides the
autograph and first
edition also the first
edition's orchestral
parts, together with the
piano arrangement
produced from the
autograph by Sergei
Taneyev. In addition to
thoroughly clarifying
dynamics and
articulation, the source
comparison also corrected
many errors and solved
problematical passages,
such as, for instance,
the trombone entry in m.
372 of the finale.
Considered, moreover, for
the first time has been
the composer's doubts
about his work and its
ambiguities, frequently
successfully suppressed
in the history of its
performance and
reception. Tchaikovsky's
conductor's copy is
unfortunately lost, hence
his alterations made for
the Hamburg performance
are not precisely known.
They have survived only
indirectly through
remarks that Willem
Mengelberg left to
posterity, for which he
could draw on
Tchaikovsky's conductor's
score and oral references
by the composer's brother
Modest. So, anyone
wishing to deal seriously
with the work's
certainties will not be
able to do so in the
future without having
also to deal with its
uncertainties.

grands motets, Quam
dilecta, In convertendo
and Deus noster refugium,
which Jean-Philippe
Rameau composed from 1713
to 1715 are still
relatively unknown today.
Yet these masterworks can
stand comparison to the
best works of
Michel-Richard de
Lalande. They are
testimony to Rameau's
great contrapuntal
mastery and contain
beautiful lyrical
passages. Quam dilecta
and Deus noster refugium
have survived only in
later sources which
originated in about 1770,
after Rameau's death, and
the works have been
rendered in a scoring
which does not correspond
to his intentions. The
present new edition
attempts for the first
time to reconstruct them
as closely as possible to
their original form. The
edition of In convertendo
is based on Rameau's
autograph score from
1751.

Here is an
anthem with fresh
perspective and
innovative musical
elements. Unfolding
slowly, this
impressionistic tone poem
marries text and music
with great care and
elegance. The lyric
comparison of creation to
a sanctuary is unique
but, when joined with the
composer's palette of
compositional colors, the
result is an anthem of
great scope and beauty.
Praiseworthy!

The
opera Nais received its
premiere at the Academie
Royale in the
Palais-Royal, Paris, on
22 April 22 1749 to
celebrate the signing of
the Treaty of
Aix-la-Chapelle. It was
revived in August 1764,
shortly before Rameau's
death and achieved great
success as a 'peace
opera'. This
scholarly-critical
edition, published by
Pascal Denecheau in
theOpera Omnia Rameau, is
the fruit of a meticulous
comparison of every known
musical source. The main
body of the edition
presents the version
pronounced valid by
Rameau for the 1749
performances. The
appendices contain those
passages that he deleted
during the 1749
rehearsals and all the
changes he made for the
new production of 1764.
It is here, and
especially in the
ballets, that Rameau
reveals his consummate
mastery of the
orchestra.

Widor's
early organ symphonies
op. 13 have a quite
special character because
of their suite-like
structure. The
six-movement Symphony II
also combines different
types of movement in an
unusual way; for example,
it includes a Praeludium
Circulare, which explores
all the twelve keys, a
Salve Regina based on the
Gregorian antiphon of the
same name, and a grand
Toccata as the Finale, an
interesting precursor of
the famous Toccata from
the 5th Symphony. The
Carus edition is based on
the Paris edition of
1928/29, the last one to
be published during
Widor's lifetime. The
corrections which the
composer made after the
publication of the
1928-29 edition have also
been taken into
consideration. As well as
this, earlier editions
have been consulted for
comparison to clarify
individual variant
readings. Editorial
suggestions on the
performance of individual
passages complete the new
edition. Great organ

The first
textcritical edition of
Mahler's most extensive
work is a further
milestone in the project,
Mahler - The Symphonies.
The many sources first
consulted here for an
edition include, among
others, the conducting
scores used for early
performances by Mahler,
Mengelberg and other
conductors, as well as
the parts of the Vienna
Philharmonic used by
Mahler, Bruno Walter and
many additional great
conductors right up to
the present. Furthermore,
another set of parts from
Mahler's personal
possession was consulted.
These sources,
significantly expanding
the source base in
comparison with that of
the 1974 Kritische
Gesamtausgabe, guarantee
a reliable, scholarly
valid music text,
shedding at the same time
new light on Mahler's
complex process of
revision. In
unprecedented
comprehensiveness, the
editorial report contains
references from Mahler's
letters and other
authentic documents
indispensable for an
understanding of the work
and its interpretation.
The orchestral parts
feature as usual optimal
readability and
practicality. Rounding
off the edition is the
introductory essay Mahler
as Symphonist, together
with the knowledgeable
preface by Constantin
Floros, doyen of Mahler
research.

Reise
brings his signature
rhythmic impulses to his
2004 quartet, the
intricate Across the
Horizons. Although many
point to the
instrumentation as a
Messiaen quartet (Quatuor
pour le fin du temps),
let there be no further
comparison. Reise, who
was earlier introduced to
Carnatic rhythms of South
India music and who finds
ways of incorporating
them into his own, has
taken us on a significant
journey in three
movements. As always,
Reise's music attracts
the finest performers -
Across the Horizons has
been recorded by Charles
Abramovic (piano),
Allison Herz (clarinet),
Karen Bentley Pollick
(violin), and Michal
Schmidt (cello). For
advanced performers.

For
comparison, Hindemith
begins the 'Suite
franzosischer Tanze' with
the original movements by
Pierre d'Attaignant. This
is meant to be a
demonstration and
motivation for the player
of today to add on his
own little
improvisa-tions or
ornaments according to
his playing skill as it
is done with village
dance music but even with
jazz.The instruments can
be freely chosen; this
arrangement (piccolo and
flute, oboe, English
horn, bassoon, trumpet
and lute) tries to
imitate a group
consisting of recorders,
shawm, crumhorn, dulcian
etc.
