famous brass band contest
held ever year on Whit
Friday in Oldham and
Saddleworth. Given the
competition’s long
history (over 120 years),
he consciously composed
this piece in a very
traditional march form.
The title, The Conqueror,
refers to Alexander the
Great’s nickname
as well as being
something every band
aspires to be!

Wünnewil-Flamatt
requested a new work to
be commissioned for the
celebration of its 111th
anniversary. They asked
the composer to create a
piece lasting
approximately 11 minutes
and 11 seconds. The band
asked Jan Van der Roost
to reflect on a number of
aspects from the past, as
well as the current state
of affairs. The piece
contains lyrical
movements, cheerful and
jubilant parts, as well
as light introverted
sequences. Fantasia
Helvetica is a varied
concert piece with a
number of challenging
passages, but is also fun
to
play!

I have adapted a standard
musical form to a
contemporary medium. The
concertino is a small
concerto: a one-movement
work that draws upon the
basic principles of the
concerto form - two
bodies of sound which at
times compete, contrast,
or act together. The
piece explores the
musical possibilities of
Roto-toms. The sound of
these drums is a cross
between a tom-tom and a
timpani, and their pitch
is changed by rotating
the drum. During the
course of the work, the
various effects used
include pitch and
fingernail glissandi;
playing on the rims; and
playing on the heads with
fingers, brushes, timpani
sticks, wood mallets or
rattan. Harmonics on the
octave and the fourth
above the fundamental
pitch are produced by the
drums when weights (in
this case, small pitched
cymbales called crotales)
are placed in the center
of the drum heads. In
return the drum itself
acts a resonator for the
crotales, which also have
a fundamental pitch when
played on the face and a
partial a fifth above
when played on the center
dome. The opening section
of the concertino
introduces a motive,
played by the soloist,
while the ensemble
sustains a bowed chord on
the vibraphone. Following
this cadenza-like
introduction, the piece
gradually moves into a
bright 6/8 tempo that is
characterized by constant
sixteenth notes in all
parts. After a brief
period of interaction,
the ensemble continues
its sixteenth notes
patterns and the soloist
plays and improvised
solo. Next, an interlude
is presented by the
ensemble which leads to a
dramatic recapitulation
by the soloist of the
motivic material. A
thematically-derived coda
concludes the work.
Encounters VI,
commissioned by Remo
Belli, is dedicated to
Jennifer Kraft, the
composer's daughter. The
premiere performance took
place in 1976 at the MENC
National Convention in
Atlantic City, New
Jersey, and was performed
by the Temple University
Percussion Ensemble
conducted by Glenn

Siimes is my second wind
quintet and is based on
the saxophone concerto
Saivo. The title of the
work suggests an
allegorical hiding place
deep in the forest, from
where one can easily
observe the surrounding
reality. The first
movement flows and swirls
like divingunder water,
at times changing
direction and always
bubbling merrily. The
second movements ethereal
shimmering culminates
into the last movements
mighty chord pillars that
pile up on one another
like an ash cloud. Siimes
is dedicated to Auriga
Wind Quintet's flautist
Heli Haapala, who
commissioned the work
with the support of the
Sibelius Foundation.

The hymn
tune SHADES MOUNTAIN (K.
Lee Scott, 1987) is
paired with a 1976 Erik
Routley text in this
concertato for choir,
congregation, brass
quintet, organ, and
optional timpani and
percussion. Six stanzas
of the fifteen-measure
melody are provided here.
Two stanzas are notated
in SATB layout. Stanza 2
encourages the
congregation to sing in
four parts as in a hymnal
layout (reproducible
congregational pages are
provided). Stanza 4 is
for the choir alone, a
cappella, in four parts.
One stanza (1) asks the
women of the congregation
to sing with the women of
the choir, and this
concept is repeated with
the men (stanza 3).
Stanza 5 is unison,
stanza 6 is unison with
descant. An introduction
and interlude before the
final stanza round out
the piece. A majestic
piece, full of wonderful
variety and color.

mysterious to the
glorious, Biery perfectly
captures the wide-ranging
moods of this text, set
to the enduring tune
EBENEZER. This hymn
concertato was written
for the Schola Cantorum
of Concordia Theological
Seminary, Fort Wayne,
Indiana in observance of
the 500th anniversary of
the Reformation. So, it's
no surprise that the
setting has considerable
sweep and gravitas, with
some fresh harmonic
twists. A beautiful
choir-only section spans
stanzas three and four in
major tonalities that
nicely complement the
staid minor of the rest
of the hymn. The sixth
and final stanza is
unison with descant and
concludes with a choir
Alleluia and Amen.

The
cantata Ich liebe den
Hochsten von ganzem
Gemute (I love the
Almighty with all of my
spirit) BWV 174 was
composed for Whit Monday
1729. It probably belongs
to Bach's fourth cycle of
cantatas, known as the
Picander cycle. Most of
the cantata is taken up
by the introductory
Sinfonia. This is a
reworking of the first
movement of the famous
third Brandenburg
Concerto BWV 1048. Bach
took the movement almost
unaltered and simply
added wind parts to
strengthen the sound to
the nine string parts
(three violins, three
violas, three
violoncelli) and basso
continuo - two corni da
caccia and two oboes,
reinforced by two
violins, an oboe da
caccia (taille) and a
viola. The following
movements (aria,
recitative, aria) form a
distinct contrast with
their chamber music
scoring (two oboes or one
or two string parts with
basso continuo). A simple
four-part chorale
concludes the cantata.

The music begins with a
slow theme in dotted
rhythms in the manner of
a traditional baroque
overture. The faster
music that follows begins
first with the organ
alone, employing a basse
de trompette texture (the
organ's trumpet stop
sounding in the bass
register). This is soon
answered by a bright,
melodic theme in the
strings. The interplay of
these three main ideas is
developed across the rest
of the piece.

Norwegian
composer Edvard Grieg
(1843-1907) wrote a lot
of songs, several of
which Jacob de Haan has
arranged for ensemble of
variable strength. The
songs are: Fremad!
Fremad!, Stille Nu! and
Fola, Fola, Blakken. It
has been arranged for
beginner bands and can be
played with a minimum of
four players (+
percussion).

Flute. This piece shows
all the stylistic
characteristics of one of
England's lesser known
composers. The opening,
with it's unison
semiquaver passages
alternating with
dissonant major seventh
chords, has almost the
feeling of a baroque
concerto grosso about it,
albeit with a very modern
harmonic palette. These
sections alternate with
slower passages featuring
lush harmonies and
sinuous, flowing lines.
The end is a flourish of
semiquavers followed by a
staggering series of jazz
tinged chord that push
all the instruments up to
the top of their
registers (even the alto
and bass flutes!). A
great chance to bring the
music of this composer to
a wider audience.

written in a classic
â??theme and
variationsâ??
construction, opening
with an Irish-inspired
melodic theme, which is
then followed by four
variations of divergent
character. After the
introduction of the theme
by the soloist, the
cornets and trombones
play the main melody in
Variation 1, while the
soloist provides a
flowing counter melody.
Next comes the highly
extrovert and lively
Variation 2, contrasted
by an introverted
Variation 3 in a minor
key. A masterful tutti
(Variation 4) then leads
the piece toward a
brilliant
ending.
