The
work Prevision has
been composed in a free
fantasy form. Deep in
thought the composer
sketches his prevision -
the development of his
small grandson growing up
to be an adult. After a
brilliant introduction, a
slow march follows,
whichsymbolises the first
steps toward adulthood.
Aspects such as love and
a sense of security, that
are indispensable for a
positive development, are
presented in a calm
middle section, after
which an energetic
closing part refers to
the rebelliousnessof an
adolescent. The grand
finale of
Prevision
expresses the
grandfather’s and
composer’s
positive picture of the
future.
Prevision
is een in vrije
fantasievorm gecomponeerd
werk waarin de componist
het opgroeien van zijn
kleinzoon verklankt. Na
een luisterrijke
inleiding volgt een
langzame mars die de
eerste stappen op weg
naar volwassenheid
symboliseert. Aspecten
als liefde en
geborgenheid,
onontbeerlijk voor een
positieve ontplooiing,
komen naar voren in een
rustig middengedeelte,
waarna een energiek
slotdeel verwijst naar de
opstandigheid van een
puber. Het grootse slot
van Prevision
geeft gestalte aan het
positieve toekomstbeeld
van de grootvader en
componist.
In

Fantasievoll kleidet er
die Entwicklung vom

bis hin zum erwachsenen

musikalische Bilder.
Erfüllt von Liebe und

Großvater im Finale
schließlich einen
positiven Blick in die

British
composer Philip Sparke
was asked to write this
arrangement of Hymn to
Frei for the
Norwegian Brass Band Frei
Hornmusikk . Sparke had
already used part of this
hymn by a composer
well-known in the home
region of the band in
The Saga of Haakon the
Good. In A
Norwegian Hymn, three
verses of the tune can be
heard: the first is
performed by various
soloists, followed by a
quieter second verse,
before the third verse
brings the piece to a
triumphal close. A
beautiful piece, which is
also excellent to use to
work on musicality with
bands in lower
divisions.
Philip
Sparke arrangeerde Hymne

Brass Band Frei

Norwegian Hymn zijn ook
drie verzen uit zijn
eerdere werk The Saga of
Haakon the Good te horen.
De eerste wordt
uitgevoerd door diverse
solisten, gevolgd door
een rustiger tweede
couplet. Het derde deel
brengt het werk naar een
triomfantelijk einde. Een
mooi werk waarmee u
uitstekend kunt werken
aan de muzikaliteit van
orkesten in de lagere

ish comments: The Requiem
in memory of Salvador
Espriu by Xavier
Benguerel was
commissioned by the
Torroella de Montgri
International Music
Festival for a double
commemoration: on the one
hand, to celebrate the
tenth anniversary of the
Festival, and on the
other, in remembrance of
Catalan poet Salvador
Espriu in the fifth year
after his death. This
concert, which was held
on 5 October, was a
brilliant closing gala
performance and it was
repeated twice on 6 and 7
October at the Palau de
la Musica Catalana in
Barcelona. It was
performed by the
Orchestra and Choir of
the Gran Teatro del
Liceo, with soloists
Enriqueta Tarres,
soprano; Nelibel
Martinez, mezzo soprano;
Eduard Gimenez, tenor;
and Carlos Chausson,
baritone, with the
additional collaboration
of baritone Lluis Llach,
conducted by Romano
Gandolfi.
In my
opinion, this work by
Benguerel is a piece that
was written with passion
and sincerity, with great
strength and depth, and
it contains some very
beautiful passages. It is
written in a language
through which, without
abandoning his current
musical thoughts,
Benguerel manages to
communicate with the
audience in a dense work
that lasts for an hour
and a half. It is
interspersed with seven
poems by Espriu on the
subject of death, some
sung and others recited,
which gives the Requiem
great contrasts from a
musical and linguistic
point of view -in
comparison with the Latin
texts normally used in a
requiem mass-, but within
a successful and coherent
unity. The performers
certainly proved their
worth, but much of the
hard work that went into
preparing the piece can
be attributed not only to
the performers, the
composer and the poet in
tribute to whom the work
was written, but also to
the conductor Romano
Gandolfi, who is largely
responsible for the
success of the three
performances of this
Requiem. Benguerel
himself says of the work:
This Requiem is linked to
my previous work, the
Llibre Vermell, and it
has been written without
making any concessions,
but with a true wish to
communicate with the
audience. I've got past
the stage of musical
experiments and I'm now
working on bridging the
gap between composer and
audience, which I'm sure
will be good for
both. --Comments

s del Espanol: El Requiem
a la memoria de Salvador
Espriu de Xavier
Benguerel ha sido
compuesto por encargo del
Festival Internacional de
Musica de Torroella de
Montgri para una doble
conmemoracion: por una
parte, el decimo
aniversario del Festival;
por otra, el recuerdo de
la figura del poeta
catalan Salvador Espriu
en el quinto ano de su
fallecimiento. Este
concierto, celebrado el
dia 5 de octubre,
constituyo una sesion de
gala y de clausura
brillante y tuvo una
doble repeticion los dias
6 y 7en el Palau de la
Musica Catalana de
Barcelona. Fueron sus
interpretes la Orquesta y
el Coro del Gran Teatro
del Liceo, con los
solistas vocales
Enriqueta Tarres,
soprano; Nelibel
Martinez, mezzo; Eduard
Gimenez, tenor; y Carlos
Chausson, baritono, con
la colaboracion del
tambien baritono Lluis

direccion de Romano
Gandolfi.
A mi
entender, la obra de
Benguerel es una
partitura escrita con
pasion y sinceridad,
posee una gran solidez,
es profunda y contiene
pasajes de una gran
belleza. Esta escrita en
un lenguaje con el que
Benguerel, sin renunciar
a su actual pensamiento
musical, alcanza la
comunicacion con el
publico en una obra densa
que dura una hora y
media. La intercalacion
de siete poemas de Espriu
relacionados con el tema
de la muerte, en una
interpretacion cantada o
recitada, segun los
casos, otorga al Requiem
grandes contrastes desde
un punto de vista musical
y lingŸistico à en
contraposicion con los
textos latinos propios de
una misa de requiem Ã,
pero dentro de una unidad
conseguida y coherente.
La labor de los
interpretes demostro su
categoria y el trabajo
exhaustivo en la
preparacion de la obra,
que, ademas de los
interpretes, el
compositor y el poeta
homenajeado, tuvo otro
gran protagonista en la
persona del director
Romano Gandolfi, a quien
se debe una gran parte
del exito obtenido en las
tres audiciones de este
Requiem. El propio
Benguerel ha dicho de la
obra: Este Requiem
entronca con mi obra
anterior, el Llibre
Vermell, y ha sido
escrito sin concesiones,
pero con una voluntad
real de comunicacion con
el publico. La epoca de
los experimentos
musicales ya se me paso y
he entrado en una nueva
etapa de acercamiento
entre el compositor y el
publico que, estoy
convencido, beneficiara a
ambos. --Comentario

Ant
nio Francisco Braga
(1868-1945) belongs to
the generation of
Brazilian composers of
the first republican
period, aesthetically
tied to romanticism,
alongside Henrique Oswald
(1852-1931), Leopoldo
Miguez (1850-1902),
Glauco Velásquez
(1884-1914), and Barrozo
Neto (1881-1941). Born in
Rio de Janeiro, on April
15th, 1868, he began his
musical studies at the
Asilo dos Meninos
Desvalidos, in 1876. In
1883, he enrolled at the
Imperial Conservatório
de Música where he
studied harmony and
counterpoint with Carlos
de Mesquita – a former
student of César Franck,
Durand, and Massenet –
and clarinet with
Antônio Luís de Moura.
Braga's first
compositions date from
this period: Sonho de
Dante (1885), Dolce far
niente (1886), the first
Valse Romantique for
piano (1886), among
others. In 1887, he
premiered his first
symphonic work,
Fantasia-Abertura. In
1890, being one of the
finalists in a
competition to choose the
new Brazilian national
anthem, Braga was awarded
a scholarship to study in
Europe, where he took
classes with Jules
Massenet at the Paris
Conservatory. During this
period, he wrote some of
his most important
symphonic works, Paysage,
Cauchemar, Episódio
Sinfônico, and Marabá
(which was performed by
Richard Strauss and the
Vienna Philharmonic in
1920, in Brazil). His
opera Jupyra is
considered one of the
greatest Brazilian
compositions of that
genre. Back in Brazil,
he was appointed
professor of
counterpoint, fugue, and
composition at the
Instituto Nacional de
Música, in 1902. There,
some of the finest
Brazilian composers
studied with him, like
Glauco Velásquez and
Lorenzo
Fernândez. Braga
wrote operas, symphonic
works, songs, sacred
music, two Masses, music
for piano, different
chamber formations, band,
and choir. He is the
author of many patriotic
hymns, the most popular
of which is Hino à
Bandeira (with lyrics by
Olavo Bilac). He explored
Brazilian nationalist
elements in some of his
works, as in Variações
sobre um Tema Brasileiro
and in the Trio for
violin, cello and piano,
whose third movement is
based on a lundu (a
musical genre and dance
of Afro-Brazilian
origin). In addition
to being a composer,
Braga was one of the most
active conductors of his
time, having been ahead
of three orchestras in
Rio de Janeiro: Instituto
Nacional de Música,
Sociedade de Concertos
Sinfônicos, and Theatro
Municipal. Braga
conducted the Brazilian
premiere of major
symphonic works such as
La Mer (Debussy), Pacific
231 (Honegger) besides
other numerous Brazilian
compositions. In 1938,
he retired from Instituto
Nacional de Música. He
passed away on March
14th, 1945, in Rio de
Janeiro. Unfortunately
, Francisco Braga never
wrote for the guitar.
However, over a century
ago his music had already
been incorporated to its
repertoire. According to
information found in
newspapers of the time,
Spanish guitarist
Josefina Robledo included
transcriptions of pieces
by Braga in her programs
when she performed in
Brazil: Gavota e Minuete
(from the melodrama
Contratador de
Diamantes), in 1919, in
São Paulo, and the
waltz-caprice Corrupio,
in 1921, in Rio de
Janeiro. The piano
score of Madrigal Pavane
was dedicated to Alexina
Leitão and published by
Casa Vieira Machado, in
1901. According to the
composer’s catalogue,
there are two other
versions of this piece:
strings orchestra (1901)
and quartet (which is
still in manuscript).
Dedicated to Braga’s
childhood friend José de
Souza Rocha, Timburibá
(the name of a Brazilian
tree) is a tango for
piano from 1886,
published by Narciso &
Arthur
Napoleão.

English
comments: Despite the
difficulties that he
claims to have in
conceiving a guitaristic
language, Xavier
Benguerel is composer
notorious for his
prolific guitar writing.
If in the course of its
history the language of
this instrument has
oscillated between
melodic writing with
violonistic roots and a
fundamentally pianistic
harmonic writing.
Benguerel achieves a
perfect balance between
both tendencies. This
opportune convergence
allows the performer to
employ a wide array of
markedly contrasted
virtuoso techniques and
instrumental resources
and at the same time
presents the listener a
guitaristic discourse
with a musical richness
that is perfectly
balanced with the string
quartet or string
orchestra.
The Autumn
Concerto gathers
together, from a renewed
perspective, some of the
best discoveries the
composer has offered
throughout his production
for guitar. Its open
dialog, formal structure,
instrumental efficiency
and textural variety make
this work very appealing
when it comes to
including it in a concert
programme. --Jaume

Comentarios
del Espanol: Pese a las
dificultades que confiesa
tener para concebir un
lenguaje guitarristico,
Xavier Benguerel se ha
convertido en un
compositor notoriamente
prolifico en su
produccion para guitarra.
Si a lo largo de la
historia el lenguaje de
este instrumento ha
basculado entre la
escritura melodica de
raices violinisticas y la
armonica de fundamentos
pianisticos, Benguerel
consigue un perfecto
equilibrio entre ambas
tendencias. Esta feliz
confluencia posibilita al
interprete gozar de un
despliegue de tecnicas
virtuosisticas y recursos
instrumentales
marcadamente contrastados
y, a la vez, proporciona
al oyente un discurso
guitarristico con una
plenitud sonora
perfectamente equilibrada
con las propuestas del
cuarteto o de la orquesta
de cuerda.
El
Concierto de Otono recoge
-con vision renovada-
algunas de los mejores
hallazgos que el
compositor nos ha ido
ofreciendo a lo largo de
su produccion para
guitarra y su caracter
dialogante, estructura
formal, eficacia
instrumental y variedad
de texturas hacen de esta
una obra de gran
atractivo a la hora de
formar parte de la
programacion de un
concierto. --Jaume

British

arrangement of Hymn to
Frei for the
Norwegian Brass Band Frei

already used part of this
hymn by a composer
well-known in the home
region of the band in
The Saga of Haakon the

Norwegian Hymn, three
verses of the tune can be
heard: the first is
performed by various
soloists, followed by a
quieter second verse,
before the third verse
brings the piece to a
triumphal close. A
beautiful piece, which is
also excellent to use to
work on musicality with
bands in lower
divisions.

drie verzen uit zijn
eerdere werk The Saga of

De eerste wordt
uitgevoerd door diverse

een rustiger tweede
couplet. Het derde deel
brengt het werk naar een

Cantica de
Sancto Benedicto is a
three-movement work for
mixed choir, soprano
solo, concert band and
organ ad libitum - on
Latin lyrics that relate
to the life of Saint
Benedict. It was
commissioned by the city
of Norcia in Italy, where
Benedict was born. The
holy Benedict (480-547)
is considered the founder
of monastic life within
the Roman Catholic
Church. His enormous
influence is especially
owing to his monastic
rule, the Regula
Benedicti.Jacob de Haan
has named the movements
of Cantica de Sancto
Benedicto after the
Holy Trinity: the Father
(Gloria Patri),
the Son (Gloria
Filio) and the Holy
Spirit (Gloria
Spiritui Sancto). The
lyrics of thehymn
Gemma Caelestis,
(which, like the other
texts, were originally
used in Gregorian chant)
are voiced by the choir.
To this purpose, Jacob de
Haan composed new,
choral-like, homophone
music. The sequence
Laeta Quies is
rendered by the soprano;
the verses (divided over
the three movements) are
alternated with those of
Gemma Caelestis.
The work closes with an
impressive grand finale,
in which texts are used
from the proprium of the
mass in honor of the
saint’s day of the
holy Benedict (11 July).
Notes to the conductor:
For this cantata, there
are various possibilities
for the performance. The
first involves a
performance in which the
choir and soprano parts
are only accompanied by
organ. Such a performance
has several advantages:
since the band never
sounds together with the
choir and the soprano, no
balance problems occur,
and even a performance
with a large concert band
and a small cantata choir
is conceivable. A special
layout is also possible -
with which you can set up
a three-dimensional
performance in a church.
For example, the choir
can sing in the chancel,
accompanied by the choir
organ; the soprano can
stand on the gallery,
accompanied by the main
organ; and the band can
be seated in another part
of the church. The choir
could also sing from a
gallery. With layouts
like this, working with
two conductors is
advisable.

Sunday in
the Park was written
for tenor horn virtuoso
Sheona White, and
commissioned by her
partner, Matt Wade, as a
Christmas present.
Composer Philip Sparke
had known and admired
Sheona’s playing
for many years, having
produced her firstsolo CD
and written pieces for
her previously. Both
composer and performer
are huge fans of the late
Karen Carpenter, Sheona
in part modelling her
sound on the
singer’s sultry
voice; so it was decided
that this new solo would
be a piece which,
whilstnot being a
‘Carpenters’
pastiche, paid tribute to
their relaxed style and
rich harmonic language.
Sunday in the Park
opens with an accompanied
cadenza for the soloist,
which leads to a gentle
rhythmic melody with a
laid-back feel. This
istaken up by the band
but the soloist sparks a
change of mood by
introducing a faster
light rock interlude.
This reaches a climax, at
which point the music
unwinds until the
original mood returns. A
variation on the original
melody leads to a
shortcadenza from the
soloist, which brings the
work to a peaceful
close.
Sunday

geschreven voor Sheona
White, een ware virtuoos
op de althoorn, in
opdracht van haar
partner, Matt Wade, die
het haar gaf als
kerstgeschenk. Componist
Philip Sparke is al
jarenlang kenner en
bewonderaar van
hetalthoornspel van
Sheona. Hij heeft haar
eerste solo-cd
geproduceerd en al eerder
stukken voor haar
geschreven. Zowel de
componist als de
uitvoerende zijn grote
fans van de legendarische
Karen Carpenter; Sheona
baseert haar sound zelfs
gedeeltelijk opde zwoele
stem van deze zangeres.
Daarom is dit solowerk
een eerbetoon geworden
aan de relaxte stijl en
rijke harmonische taal
van de Carpenters hoewel
het niet gaat om een
potpourri van bekende
nummers. Sunday in the
Park begint met
eenbegeleide cadens voor
de solist, die uitmondt
in een soepele, ritmische
melodie met een
ontspannen feel. Die
melodie wordt overgenomen
door het orkest, waarop
de solist een
sfeerverandering
teweegbrengt met de
introductie van een
sneller tussenspelin een
lichte rockstijl. Dit
gedeelte bereikt een
climax, waarna de muziek
weer tot rust komt en de
oorspronkelijke stemming
terugkeert. Een variatie
op de originele melodie
leidt naar een korte
cadens van de solist,
gevolgd door een
sfeervolleafronding. <

story of the building of
the Tower ofBabel, a
tower built to reach the

work in seven movements

toren van Babel uit het
Oude Testament schreef
componist Hayato Hirose
een indrukwekkend
programmatisch werk in
zeven delen - uit te
voeren zonder pauzes. De
delen zijn getiteld:
Tower ofBabel (De
toren van Babel) -
Settlers from the
East (Kolonisten uit
het oosten) - Building
the Tower (Het bouwen
van de toren) -

God’s Worry
(De zorgen van God) -
Confusion
(Verwarring) - en
Dispersion
(Verspreiding).
Au
f der Grundlage der
biblischen Geschichte vom
Turmbau zu Babel aus dem
Alten Testament schuf
Hayato Hirose ein
dramatisches
programmatisches Werk in
sieben Sätzen, die
ohne Unterbrechung zu
spielen sind. Sie
erzählen kunstvoll und
detailreich die
Geschichte vom Beginn des
Turmbaus über den Zorn
Gottes bis hin zur
Verwirrung der Sprachen
und der Zerstreuung der
Menschen über die
ganze Welt. Ein
großartiges Werk!

In diesem Werk
widmet sich Jan Van der
Roost Schottland und
dessen berühmten
Hochland. In musikalisch
gekonnter Weise verbindet
er die charakteristischen
Eigenarten der
schottischen Volksmusik
mit seiner eigenen
kompositorischen
Kreativität. Mit der
Highland Rhapsody
gelang es Jan Van der
Roost, die Atmosphäre
dieser rauen, aber
wunderschönen
Landschaft einzufangen
und damit ein
einzigartiges Konzertwerk
zu schaffen, das Musiker
und Publikum begeistern
wird.

Wedding
March is een
feestelijk
gelegenheidswerk, de
Belgische componist Jan
Van der Roost schreef het
in 2007 voor de
huwelijksceremonie van
een goede vriend.
Invloeden van Mendelssohn
en Elgar zijn zeker te
herkennen, maardeze mars
is toch karakteristiek
voor Van der Roost - met
een gevarieerde thematiek
en een uitgesproken
zangerige triomelodie.
Het orgel aan het slot is
ad libitum, maar
vanzelfsprekend zorgt de
toegevoegde orgelklank
voor extrapracht en
praal.

Einflüsse von

nichtsdestotrotz ist
Wedding March mit
abwechslungsreichen

ist ad libitum, der
Orgelklang verleiht dem
Stück
natürlich
zusätzlichen
Glanz.
