Offenbach (1819 - 1880), who was born in Germany, moved to Paris when he was a teenage boy and remained there for much of his life. He became especially famous as a composer of numerous operettas. and of one famous opera: Les Contes d’Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann). His operettas (or ‘musiquettesâ€℠¢) were often based on comical, or satirical librettos. He makes fun of Parisian daily life, dignitaries, the military, the pretentiousness of the Grand Opéra, and so on. In that respect, Offenbach’s operettas are not really comparable with those of his German-speaking contemporaries, for example, Franz Lehár and Johann Strauss the Younger. Musically speaking, we could callOffenbach’s operettas lively, funny, melodious and catchy.For La Belle Hélène, Offenbach drew from Greek mythology. The story is based on that of Helen of Troy, but is set in France, halfway through the 19th century; it has been turned into a satire on the élite of that time.The overture to La Belle Hélène was (and still is) very successful. Offenbach combined a number of arias and choruses from the operetta to give a taste of what is to follow. Many overtures which follow this form lack unity and structure. However, in this case the composition has been well thought-out.

In dat opzicht zijn Offenbachs operettes nauwelijks te vergelijken met die in Duitsland van bijvoorbeeld Franz Lehár en Johann Strauss jr. Muzikaal gezien kunnen we zijn operettes levendig,geestig, melodieus en goed in het gehoor liggend noemen.Voor La Belle Hélène putte Offenbach uit de Griekse mythologie. Het verhaal draait om Helena van Troje, maar is verplaatst naar Frankrijk, halverwege de negentiende eeuw; het is uitgewerkt tot een satire op de heersende elite.De ouverture van La Belle Hélène was (en is nog altijd) zeer succesvol. Musikalisch betrachtet können Offenbachs Operetten alslebendig, amüsant, melodiös und eingängig beschrieben werden. Für La Belle Hélène bediente sich Offenbach der griechischen Mythologie. Die Handlung beruht auf Helena von Troja, wurde aber ins Frankreich der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts versetzt und in eine Satire auf die damals herrschende Elite verwandelt.Die Ouvertüre von La Belle Hélène war und ist sehr erfolgreich. Offenbach kombinierte darin eine Reihe von Arien und Chorstellen aus der Operette und lieferte so quasi einen Vorgeschmack auf das Folgende. Vielen auf diese Weise entstandene Ouvertüren mangelt es an Einheitlichkeit und Struktur. Diese Ouvertüre zeugt jedoch von einem gut durchdachten Aufbau.

At the end of the 1960s the group Creedence Clearwater Revival wrote many successful numbers, many of which were covered by various artists. Proud Mary - one of their best known songs was covered many times and this arrangement by Thijs Oud is based on Tina Turner’s performance. For the musicians this is a fantastic piece to play. A Midwest Fanfare was commissioned by the Brass Band of Battle Creek and premiered by them during their appearance at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago on 20th December 2017 where this fanfare was the opening piece of the entire event. This piece is designed to be played with the cornets split into two teams either side of the band. It opens with the two groups answering each other antiphonally over a repeated figure in the lower band. A calmer central section introduces a euphonium solo which is then taken up by the whole ensemble. This leads back to a repeat of the opening fanfares over a rhythmic accompaniment and a short coda which brings the work to a close.

A Midwest Fanfare werd geschreven in opdracht van de Brass Band of Battle Creek en op 20 december 2017 door dit ensemble in première gebracht als openingswerk op de Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Het werk is zo gecomponeerd dat de kornetten in twee teams worden verdeeld, die aan weerszijden van de band komen te staan. Deze twee groepen antwoorden elkaar op antifonale wijze boven een herhaald motief in de lagere registers. Een rustiger centraal gedeelte introduceert een eufoniumsolo, die aansluitend wordt overgenomen door de complete band. Deze passage mondt uit in een herhaling van de openingsfanfares boven een ritmische begeleiding, waarna het werk met een korte coda fraaiwordt afgesloten.

A Midwest Fanfare wurde von der Brass Band of Battle Creek in Auftrag gegeben und bei ihrem Auftritt anlässlich der Midwest Clinic in Chicago am 20. Dezember 2017 uraufgeführt, wo diese Fanfare den Auftakt für die gesamte Veranstaltung bildete. Das Stück ist so konzipiert, dass die Kornette in zwei Gruppen aufgeteilt sind und auf beiden Seiten der Brass Band platziert werden. Es beginnt mit einem Wechselgesang der beiden Gruppen, der über einer sich wiederholenden Melodie in den tieferen Stimmen der Brass Band erklingt. Im ruhigeren Mittelteil wird ein Euphonium-Solo vorgestellt, das dann vom gesamten Ensemble aufgenommen wird. Schließlich kehren die Eröffnungsfanfarenü ber einer rhythmischen Begleitung zurück und eine kurze Coda bringt das Werk zum Abschluss.

A Midwest Fanfare est une commande du Brass Band de Battle Creek, qui l’a créée le 20 décembre 2017 lors d’un concert dans le cadre de la Midwest Clinic, Chicago, où elle a été choisie comme fanfare d’ouverture. L’instrumentation divise les cornets en deux groupes de part et d’autre de l’orchestre. La pièce s’ouvre avec les deux groupes qui se répondent antiphonalement sur un motif répété par les basses. Edward Elgar (1857-1934) originally composed this work in 1887, as a Pie Jesu, when he was an organist in the St George’s Church in Worcester. Years later, in 1902, he transformed the Pie Jesu into an Ave Verum for soprano and tenor solo, mixed choir and organ. This excellent arrangement was created by Robert van Beringen and skilfully retains the wonderful atmosphere of the original composition.

Oorspronkelijk componeerde Edward Elgar (1857-1934) dit werk in 1887 als een Pie Jesu, toen hij organist was in de St. George’s Church in Worcester. Hij schreef het ter nagedachtenis aan de advocaat William Allen, voor wiehij had gewerkt toen hij vijftien jaar oud was. Het Pie Jesu vormde het eerste deel van opus 2 (de andere twee delen waren het Ave Maria en het Ave Maris Stella). Een aantal jaren later, in 1902, transformeerdehij het Pie Jesu tot een Ave Verum voor sopraan- en tenorsolo, gemengd koor en orgel.Deze uitstekende bewerking is van de hand van Robert van Beringen, die de sfeer van de compositie op vakkundige wijze intact heeftgelaten.

Dies e Musik schrieb Edward Elgar im Jahre 1887, während seiner Zeit als Organist in Worcester, unter dem Titel Pie Jesu als Teil seines Opus 2. En 1887, il crée un Pie Jesu, dans le cadre d'un triptyque comprenant aussi un Ave Maria et l’Ave Maria Stella. Il remanie la pièce en 1892, et celle-ci devient alors l’Ave Verum Corpus pour Soprano solo, Ténor solo, Chœur mixte et Orgue (Opus 2, n°1). Robert van Beringen en a réalisé un arrangement délicat et profond.
