Leokadiya
Kashperova
(1872–1940),
hitherto consigned to a
footnote in musical
history as Stravinsky's
piano teacher, is
undergoing rediscovery. A
double graduate of the St
Petersburg Conservatoire,
she emerged as a virtuoso
pianist and composer in
the romantic tradition.
She was associated with
some of the great
musicians of her day,
including Balakirev and
Auer. She performed in
both Germany and the UK
in the 1900s, but her
career petered out after
1920. Following her
graduation from the St
Petersburg Conservatoire
Kashperova became
personally acquainted
with the poet Yakov
Polonsky and often
attended his literary
gatherings. When he died
in 1898 Kashperova
responded by setting his
enchanting and mystical
'legend' To a Child in
Answer to the Question:
Where Do the Stars Come
From? The baritone
soloist takes the role of
the father or grandfather
who endeavours to answer
the riddle posed in the
title. He decides to
relate 'a tale of old, an
Eastern legend' which
recounts how, long ago,
the flowers would weep,
so afraid were they of
the dark. In response an
archangel (soprano solo)
descends to Earth and is
so moved by the
flowersÂ’ anguished
appeal, she gathers 'all
their tears in chalice
gold / And bears them up
to God in Heav'n above'.
The baritone narrates the
final scene as the
Almighty casts the tears
across the firmament,
thus creating the
constellations. The
childÂ’s question is
answered, and the
peaceful domesticity of
the opening scene
returns.

Felix
Mendelssohn Bartholdy as
letter-writer: at the
heart of 19th century
European
culture
As one of
the most important
letter-writers of the
19th century, Felix
Mendelssohn Bartholdy
maintained an extensive
correspondence. With
great style and eloquence
he wrote letters to
friends and family,
letters from his travels
and he also wrote to
leading composers,
musicians, artists as
well as publishers. He
corresponded with famous
contemporaries such as
Robert Schumann, Franz
Liszt and Richard Wagner
as well as Johann
Wolfgang von Goethe, Carl
Friedrich Zelter and
Alexander von
Humboldt.
The
correspondence begins in
1816 and ends in 1847
with the
composer’s death.
These letters are
invaluable documents
shedding light not only
on the genesis,
publication and revision
of his musical works, but
also on a period when
relations between
Christians and Jews still
had a chance to become
harmonious, as Moses
Mendelssohn, the imminent
scholar and grandfather
of the composer had
advocated.
This
edition will therefore be
of great interest far
beyond the circles of
musicologists and music
specialists. It will
appeal to those who are
interested in the history
of culture and ideas and
to those who perceive
Mendelssohn and his
family as representatives
of a unique, diverse
cultural epoch.
The complete
correspondence shows that
Mendelssohn not only went
on to become one of the
leading figures of German
musical culture in the
1840s, but that he also
maintained a network of
musical contacts
throughout
Europe.
The
edition of the complete
letters This
scholarly-critical
complete edition
comprises 5,855 letters
by Felix Mendelssohn
Bartholdy. Previously
only a small part of his
correspondence had been
published and made
accessible to the public.
The complete edition is
based on Mendelssohn
letters which have been
compiled over decades by
Rudolf Elvers as well as
on international research
carried out by an
academic workgroup in
Leipzig spearheaded by
chief editors Helmut Loos
and Wilhelm Seidel. They
determined 500 additional
letters hitherto
unknown.
Versions
of the letter texts have
been compiled from a
scholarly-critical
analysis of the sources,
their historical context
has been discussed and
comments on all points in
need of explanation have
been made.
This
edition of the complete
letters consists of 12
volumes and a CD-ROM.
Each volume contains
indices of mentioned
individuals and
institutions,
compositions by Felix
Mendelssohn Bartholdy and
Fanny Hensel as well as a
register of place names
and currencies. In this
way one obtains an
all-encompassing view of
this unique historical
cosmos.
The
Complete edition has been
produced to the highest
standards in terms of
layout, cover and
binding. It is an ideal
collector’s item
for bibliophiles,
providing an excellent
means for studying the
composer and the period
in which he
lived.
The CD-ROM
forms a valuable addition
to the printed volumes.
It offers the complete
printed edition in the
form of pdf. files,
thereby making its
approximately 9,500 pages
digitally accessible and
enabling letters and the
corresponding commentary
to be read in parallel.
All terms can be located
quickly and conveniently
via a full text
search. (The 12
volumes as well as the
CD-ROM can only be
purchased

When
the composer was flying
to her homeland of Taiwan
from her home in Vienna,
a poetic image emerged
quite spontaneously: she
felt like a migratory
bird, flying year after
year 10,000 kilometres
away from Vienna over the
Alps and across Eastern
Europe, Arabia, Russia,
the Mongolian steppes,
the Tibetan plateau,
South-East Asia and the
Pacific in order to spend
the cold winter in the
Southern Hemisphere; in
spring she once again fly
10,000 kilometres to the
north. During this flight
her imagination plays
with the different
landscapes: what could a
migratory bird espy from
its bird’s
perspective? In this
composition Ming Wang
brings together or unite
many different sounds and
musical elements that
symbolize the various
geographical regions.
These disparate elements
are held together by a
few central notes, fixed
harmonic structures, a
migratory bird theme, a
Europe theme and a
13-note row. The Chinese
arched zither or Zheng
represents an exotic bird
that by chance has landed
in this Western
ensemble.

String Thang by
Mark Wood is based on the
twelve-bar blues. The
blues has deep roots in
American history,
developed out of the work
songs and chants of
African-American slaves.
The Great Migration of
the first half of the
20th century saw freed
slaves and their
descendants move to
northern and eastern
parts of the U.S., taking
their music with them.
The blues took on
different forms; in turn
it helped to create rock,
jazz, hip-hop, and other
popular genres. A
twelve-bar blues uses a
repeating chord
progression which allows
musicians to express
themselves creatively
with each recurrence. If
anything defines the
blues, it is the use of
blue notes---pitches that
don't usually belong in a
given key---and elements
of improvisation. String
Thang uses both blue
notes in the main tune
and the solo violin's
part, as well as
improvisational
principles in the solo.
For string orchestra with
optional rock rhythm
section parts.

Works
of chamber music
including flute and
strings are not nearly as
numerous as those for
clarinet, or even the
oboe. Probably the reason
for this is the less
assertive, more pure tone
the flute possesses - it
can't compete for volume
or range with the
clarinet, except in its
top octave, and the
oboe's tone is more
penetrating and easily
discerned from within a
string texture.
Consequently, composers
who have written for
flute and strings have
done so in lightweight
divertimento works:
compare, for instance,
the delicate flute
quartets of Mozart with
his monumental quintet
for clarinet and strings.
When Karl and Joan
Karber approached me with
the ideas of writing a
work for flute and string
trio, I originally
thought it would be best
to write a humorous,
rather offhand piece -
but a look at their
repertoire (mostly
comprised of smaller
works of the Rococo
period) convinced me that
it was the last thing
they needed. In spite of
the challenge (or maybe
because of it?), I
determined to write a
large work, and a serious
work. Zephyrus (named for
the God of the West Wind,
in deference to the
flute) is a
three-movement work, with
each movement cast in a
very different form, but
all three being built of
the same twelve-note
series. There is also a
rhythmic motive and a
pair of themes that
appear in all three
movements. The
first movement plays with
the idea of contrast and
persuasion. The flute, at
the outset, is the
hell-for-leather
protagonist, charging and
swooping around the
strings - who seem oddly
unconcerned by his
passion. Indeed, they
have a more somber song
to sing - and as the
movement unfolds, the
flute becomes less and
less active, while the
strings become
increasingly enlivened.
By the midpoint, when all
four instruments are
finally in the same meter
and the same tempo, the
flute's energy has
finally infected the
other three players, and
this energy does not let
up until the movement's
abrupt final cadence.
The second
movement begins with a
tag from the first - as
if the energy left over
was too great to simply
stop. At length, though,
a very poignant flute
melody appears over an
almost bluesy harmony in
the strings. After this
has been fully exposed, a
slight increase in
motion, marked gently
rocking in triplets,
features a theme-fragment
from Leonard Bernstein's
Symphony No. 2 (Kaddish).
Bernstein died as I was
writing this work, and it
seemed quite natural to
encourage what was
already implicit in the
music, and create an
Elegy for L.B. The music
rises and peaks, then in
the recapitulation of the
opening the Kaddish theme
reappears, as the
ensemble suggests a
gentle song of sleep.
The final movement
is a Rondo-Variations
form, with the slight
alteration of adding the
main theme of the second
movement in what would be
the trio of the form. The
ritornello theme is a
kind of ethnic dance
music, almost an allusion
to the Klezmer ensembles
of Eastern Europe. The
successive episodes
between the ritornelli
are loosely organized
variations on the basic
theme, but always
beginning with a metric
modulation, a rhythmic
changing of gears. The
movement reaches and apex
of speed and furious
pulsing, then abruptly
pirouttes, and finishes.
Zephyrus was
written between April and
November of 1990 in
Austin, Aspen, and
Honolulu, and is
dedicated to Karl Kraber
and The Chamber Soloists
of Austin. --Dan
Welcher.

The
present work features a
kind of pentatonic music
that is often associated
with a far eastern
landscape. However, it
has no genuine
compositional connection
with Asian music. In this
piece pentatonicism is
conducive to frictionless
intervals and
transparency of sound;
these are produced in an
ideal manner on stringed
instruments by means of
natural harmonics. The
contrasting central
section brings dense
textures and sharp
dissonance, which sound
with full intensity and
combine with portamento
to produce extreme
emotional expression and
narrative gestures.
