“The
infamous Six Cello Suites
by J. S. Bach are
perfectly adapted for the
Recorder by French wind
specialist, Jean-Claude
Veilhan. Bach originally
composed the Cello
Suites, some of the most
frequently performed and
recognised solo
compositions ever written
for the instrument,
during the period
1717-1723, when he served
as Kapellmeister in
Köthen. The second
volume of Veilhan's
adaptions for Recorder
contains suites four,
five and six and includes
phrase marks, dynamic
markings, articulation,
breath marks, and
performance directions.
Veilhan's adaptions are
flawless, making the
notorious Suites
enjoyably accessible to
the Recorder.

A unique
collection of elegant
transcriptions of
Bach’s keyboard
and instrumental gems
scored for 10 woodwinds,
with flexible scoring and
ossia parts –
ideal for schools and
“pull-outâ€
groups on wind ensemble
concerts. The music of
Johann Sebastian Bach
(1685-1750) is a gift.
Nearly every piece that
poured out of this man is
as inspired and perfected
as the next. His body of
work has cut a deep
incision in the recorded
history of music and set
a benchmark to which all
the contrapuntal masters
who followed have aspired
to meet.The
transcriptions found
within this volume add to
the thousands upon
thousands of versions of
his music already
re-worked for different
groups and media. The
music here does not,
however, embellish
Bach’s own scores
(save but for a couple of
instances in which it was
felt necessary to add an
inner voice to serve the
expansive range of the
ten woodwinds). The
selections are ordered
(loosely) to assume a
smooth, inclined
trajectory of both
difficulty and musical
breadth. The first piece
is a small and
simpleminuet, the last is
a long interior movement
of one of the most
beloved and advanced
violin concertos in the
whole repertoire.As a
keyboard player I grew up
learning and falling in
love with much of
Bach’s music at
the piano. For this very
reason, much of this
volume consists of the
composer’s
keyboard works. One
cannot, however, deny
many of the most
cherished works from
Bach’s oeuvre when
compiling a set of
transcriptions, and many
of those
“hits†are
included here as
well.Departing from a
traditional harmoniemusik
ensemble, I have replaced
the horns here with
saxophones. There are two
reasons: 1) the nature of
much of this music
requires instruments with
an ease of agility not
executable so readily on
the horn; and 2) the
opportunity for saxophone
players to be included in
such an ensemble was very
attractive,
pedagogically.I hope you
enjoy these gems from
such a great genius.

specific orchestral

Tower of Power.How these
etudes were conceived,
composed and transcribed:
The style or concept of
the etude was thought out
in my head and ear. I
then improvised in that
style and concept on my
trombone, recording my
efforts until I was
satisfied with the etude.
All along, my goal was to
play the range of the
instrument while
emphasizing certain
articulations, rhythms,
range and, fundamentally,
the intended style of the
etude. The resulting
etude was then
transcribed by a terrific
graduate student named
Zach Bornheimer, who also
works with many other
classical and jazz
composers as a
copyist/arranger.Tips for
working on the etudes:
Seek out professional
recordings that match the
style of each etude to
get a good idea of what
the etude should sound
like musically. My
recording of each of
these etudes is available
for download and can be
purchased online for a
modest fee. Search for
“Brantley
Etudes†at either
iTunes or CDBaby.
Practice each etude very
slowly and in segments as
needed, using a
metronome. Record
yourself and listen for
good technique,
musicianship and
authenticity of style
with your sound, feel and
articulations. Compare
your own efforts to the
sounds you’ve
heard on recordings.
Would you fit in that
ensemble or band? If
range is an issue, take
certain notes or passages
down or up an octave.
Work on your fundamentals
every day, including the
techniques and skills
needed for these etudes.
Be patient! Small
improvements every day
result in big success
over time. Always play
with a wide dynamic
range. Always play with
line and direction.
Always play with
impeccable time as well
as rhythm. Use a
metronome to help with
this. Always play in
tune. You can work on
this with a tuner as well
as with drones. Play
these for teachers,
friends, peers and
colleagues not only for
their feedback but also
for the experience of
informal performance. An
audience changes
everything. Make music,
listen to music, record
yourself, play in public
and have fun!One final
note: some of these are
hard. On purpose. These
are not warm-ups that you

“The Foolish

theme of making swaps,
each one with a worse

swap, can be found in
German folklore. Like the

The Swapping Song

Kale
idoscope will save you
time! Do you spend hours
arranging music for odd
assortments of
instruments? Kaleidoscope
is specially arranged to
suit almost any
instrumental combination
and these varied
ensembles are easy and
enjoyable too. So much
scope for virtually any
combination of
instruments! The series
is successful with
recorders, guitars,
percussion and keyboard
as well as with
orchestral groupings.
Whether there are five or
fifty players, every
Kaleidoscope title will
work! Just make sure that
melody and keyboard parts
are included - all other
parts are optional.
Kaleidoscope is superb
value for money - each
set contains a score plus
around 50 parts, each one
carefully written to suit
the needs of each
instrument. For example,
easy string parts are in
first position only
whilst easy clarinet
parts take care to avoid
the break. There are more
demanding parts too, for
experienced players. To
help you choose the right
pieces for your players
we have given the key of
each Kaleidoscope in
brackets. The complete
performance option! These
super-flexible
arrangements of
well-known titles are a
must for every school.
Why not choose a theme
for your concert and
perform a selection of
Kaleidoscope show titles
and film themes or have
an evening of classical
favourites? In F. Edited
