Praise to Thee, Jesus Christ. Gelobet seist du Jesu Christ (We Praise You Jesus Christ) is an old Christmas hymn dating from the 16th century, which can still be found in many hymnbooks today. John Blanken has created a varied and imaginative arrangement on four verses of the hymn. After the introduction, derived from the opening notes, the hymn is first accompanied by an agile harmonisation. Next, we hear the chorale in a four-part setting with a percussion accompaniment. Then follows a short prologue to the third verse and finally its time for fireworks as the arrangement takes a stylistic leap in time with the festive prelude to the fourth and last verse. / Niveau : 3 / Hymnes et chorals / Recueil / Fanfare

Par BULLA STEPHEN. The inspiration for this piece, commissioned by the United States Army Band, came from the Gulf and its constant presentation to the world as a media event on television. The composer wanted to capture the colour and events of war as they were played out on the television screen. Par SPARKE PHILIP. Suite from Hymn of the Highlands draws three expressive musical pictures of the Scottish highlands. The first movement, Ardross Castle, features solo passages for clarinet and bassoon and features a fascinating bagpipe melody. The second movement, Alladale, is a saxophone trio with an accompaniment featuring the percussion section. Par CESARINI FRANCO. Alpina Fanfare est une oeuvre en trois mouvements qui s’enchaînent sans interruption. Composé pour le Swiss Loss Band et dédié à Kurt Brogli, Alpina Fanfare débute avec une introduction solennelle, écrite sous la forme d’une fanfare, et exposée tout d’abord par les percussions, puis par les cors et les trombones. De cette fanfare majestueuse dérive un motif rythmique que l’on retrouve tout au long du développement. Le thème principal est exposé avec brillance par l’ensemble des pupitres de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie. La mélodie du second mouvement reprend des éléments thématiques de la fanfare d’ouverture. Le passage central est à dominance bois soutenus par les cors. Le final de l’oeuvre s’ouvre sur une interprétation brillante des trombones et des percussions qui rappelle quelque peu le style de l’introduction. Le thème lyrique du second mouvement est exposé à nouveau et le motif de la fanfare mène cette suite vers une conclusion en apothéose. / Niveau : 3 / Ouverture / Répertoire / Concert Band ou Harmonie

Par VAN DER ROOST JAN. This 4-movement suite is based on authentic folktunes from the beautiful southern province in France: the 'Provence'. The composer used an harmonic language respecting the popular characteristics, but on the other hand also contains some 'spicy' notes (. . . just like the wellknown 'Provençal sauce'! . . . ). The instrumentation is very colourful, paying a lot of attention to the different timbres of both brass and wood winds as well as to the percussion section. Every movement has its own character: 'Un Ange a fa la crido' (= An angel brought the creed / credo) is like a bourrée, 'Adam e sa Coumpagnou' (= Adam and his companion) is an old love song, 'Lou Fustié' (= the carpenter)a fast dance and finally 'Lis Escoubo' (= a whistle tune / popular ballad) is a farandole. In the latter, the old tradition of folk musicians who play a whistle with one hand and a drum with the other hand, is clearly represented during the first presentations of the one and only theme)Although this piece is not too demanding, a well balanced band is necessary to perform it successfully. Thanks to the contrasts and the varying colours, it keeps on holding the attention. / Niveau : 3 / Répertoire / Fanfare
