David Loeb's new collection Fantasias on Eurasian Melodies, for piccolo alone, gathers together his Balinese Fantasies, Tibetan Fantasias, and Preludes on Eurasian materials for a thorough tour through these interconnected musical languages. The Fantasias, distinct among Loeb's works, draw on native musical sources while building complex, intriguing music more akin to concert repertoire than native folk music. The Balinese Fantasies utilize several Balinese scale types, rarely combined in single native works. Here they are allowed to intermingle freely throughout the fantasies, and within the ornamentations and variations. While those for flute and violin belong to Telemann?s most popular works today, the fantasias for viola da gamba were unknown throughout much of recent history until a copy of these fantasias was rediscovered in 2015. For this edition, flautist Leona Rötzsch arranged the viola da gamba fantasias for solo flute, thereby complementing Telemann?s flute fantasias with another set of twelve. Today this creative Catholic at the Anglican court of Elisabeth I is known primarily for his masses, motets and madrigals. However, in addition to vocal music he also composed an impressive number of keyboard pieces that brook comparison in quality with those of his younger contemporaries Frescobaldi and Sweelinck. This edition contains a selection of his major works for keyboard instruments, some taken from such famous collections as the 'Fitzwilliam Virginal Book”, 'Parthenia” and 'My Ladye Nevells Booke”. Now all of Bärenreiter's new performing editions of Bach's organ works are being revised to reflect the current state of scholarship and to convey maximum fidelity to the sources by being linked to 'Bach digital'. The present volume is an updated edition of Series IV, Volume 6 of the 'New Bach Edition' (NBA), prepared by Dietrich Kilian in 1964. The discovery of new sources and a reassessment of existing handwritten copies have brought about changes to the contents of the volume, which now includes the 'Fantasia in C minor' (BWV 1121), the 'Fantasia in G major' (BWV 571), the 'Fugue in G major' (BWV 577) and the C major version of the 'Toccata and Fugue in E major' (BWV 566). Par HUMMEL BERTOLD. Hummel wrote three versions of the four-minute fantasias: the original version for basset horn as well as versions for solo bass clarinet and solo bassoon. The most effective version undoubtedly is the version for basset horn with its mystically transfigured sound which even Mozart had used for the musical reference to the world to come.
Each of the three fantasias begins with a Gregorian song in praise of the Virgin Mary followed by an elaborate fantasia on this tune. Thus, Hummel bridges the period from the 17th century to the present time, from the old-fashioned religious melody to 20th-century music. 'Marianische Fantasien' are pieces of moderate difficulty, yet full of charming beauty.
